Buying a TV in Cabo, Costco?

johnEvegas - 10-6-2005 at 11:03 AM

I sold my big TV but I am going to want about a 30" or 32" flat LCD tv. Something that is big and nice but still very portable. Should I buy it and bring it in or does that costco have anything that is not too expensive that is what I am looking for?

I hate to be a pest but if anyone in cabo goes into the costo to take a gander at the TV's in there and report back, I will owe them lunch at least.

If you are driving down, I definitely would suggest you purchase your TV prior to coming down. It is perfectly legal to bring a TV down for your own use. Costco Los Cabos will astound you with the markup.

Same TV with Costco in San Diego for example is found in Los Cabos for about 50-60% more money. Partly due to importation.

Many Mexican retailers sell quaility TVs at reasonable prices, imported from Japan, or where-ever. You just have to replace the Japanese to Spanish module with a Japanese to English module.

Caution

You will still pay the 17% or more import tax whether the TV is new or used. Bring your original receipt and it better be $1000 or less. Anything more requires a licensed importer help (NAFTA).

I'm talking machines imported from Japan not the US.

That is some great advice. Thank goodness there are ones that are just under $1000. What about my computer monitors? They are 19" LCDs and they are a few years old and I might not be able to find the receipt?

if you shop around you can find good TVs cheaper here than in the U.S.

Sony Sanyo and LG are built here and don't require any import.

For TV's don't just consider Costco, Try Elektra, Sorianas, CCC, Dorians.

the last VCR and DVD player I bought I saved 40% over U.S prices and 20% over Mexican Costco prices at Dorian's.

Just a small attempt at humor Larry.

This is real good to know. Does this also mean that I can get a little surround sound system and reciver in Mexico too? I rather not have to load anything up if I can get it there at a decent price.

Electronic equipment is available here at decent prices, the worst thing you could do is buy one in the states and import it.
