A Trip To Baja 1

Years back when we planned to take our first trip to Baja with small child and dog, we decided a camper was a necessity vs the old tent option we had used for some time.

Being that I was working crazy hours trying to clear my decks for our upcoming trip, my wife went camper shopping. Every classified ad got her looking; this one is nice, this one is really nice, this one is the one we HAVE to buy. "It has a full bath and a queen bed and a freezer and.......it's so cute" So she bought the one she wanted and agreed that I would pick it up with our then '88 Chevy pick-up in a few days.

When I went to pick up our new 20-year-old camper ...... of course ............it wouldn't fit ! Apparently Chevy made their beds narrower starting in '88 ! No returns; no exchanges, so the option was to re-sell the camper and keep looking or get a new truck !? Being that I am really a FORD man and had only bought the Chevy as a convenience from a friend, I did what all red blooded american males would do if caught in a similar situation and went shopping myself !!

$12,000 and a trade-in later we owned an F250 that would handle the camper. Less than a week later we were on the road..........for 9 miles, before we noticed that the camper and truck lights weren't working. A quick stop at our local mechanic found that I had put a screw through some wires when mounting my new cool, home-made roof racks on the camper. Another hour and we were on the road again !!

I-84 to Portland then I-5 south towards Califormia and Baja!

To be continued.....
