Art & Beer near Pescadero - don't go

wrk - 10-15-2005 at 07:48 PM

Don't go there. They are rude, obnoxious, rude, obnoxious. Many people on this board and other boards have said so in the past - it is true. They won't let you even wait five minutes in their establishment without paying their "minimum" charge - even if you tell them you are waiting for amigos and will happily purchase a drink when your amigos arrive. Just DON'T GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!! Doesn't matter whether you speak English or Spanish - they are equally rude in either language.

I almost got into a fight with that guy-----

Barry A. - 10-15-2005 at 07:58 PM

last time I was in there about 2 years ago. He has a real problem----------I second, DON'T GO THERE.

Tucker - 10-15-2005 at 08:11 PM

Is that the place formerly known as Los Arbolitos? Huge mango tree growing inside? The people who built and first ran the place were great. Of course that has been more than 10 years ago.

Diver - 10-15-2005 at 08:28 PM

We stopped for a snack/meal there 2 or 3 years ago.
Our little man had to pee first so we all headed for the bathrooms.
We were stopped by management who demanded the "minimum" before we pee'd. We ended up leaving without eating after my two year old dropped trou and relieved himself less than 10' from the front entry.
Kid has no shame; just like his dad !

Art & Beer

TripleG - 10-15-2005 at 09:54 PM

Must have changed a lot in a year as my wife and I have gone there several times in the last couple of years and they have been very friendly.;D;D

If you don't violate any of his "unknown" rules-----

Barry A. - 10-15-2005 at 10:11 PM

he probably is just charming. Make a mistake, and you catch his wrath-------watch your step-------the guy is a wacko, IMHO, and I would never go back.

vandenberg - 10-16-2005 at 07:17 AM

I would like to know what establishment you're talking about.
Please enlighten me.:light::light::light:

Vandenberg--------See post #1 of this thread

Barry A. - 10-16-2005 at 08:02 AM

"Art and Beer" near El Pescadero, Baja Sur, south of Todos Santos, is the one I am talking about-----it is on the west side of the highway, sorta out in the open. Wierd looking place, with strange folks inside. Don't go there, unless you are really curious about wacko folks.

David K - 10-16-2005 at 08:13 AM

Yes, perhaps escapees from the 'Hotel California'!??

vandenberg - 10-16-2005 at 08:45 AM

Barry

Thanks. Generally the Todos Santos area. Seldom go there. If we do go to the cape ,we usually take the old road through El Triunfo, much prettier and scenic. Pescaderos all over the peninsula, that's why I asked.:?:

I was confused too.

jrbaja - 10-16-2005 at 11:18 AM

Thanks for clarifying.

bajaden - 10-16-2005 at 11:34 AM

I will never go and I will also tell my friends not to go. I also seldom go through Todos Santos, so its not much of a sacrifice. Much rather go down through the cape.

Just out of curiosity, are there any mexicans left in Todos Santos?

Mexicans in Todos Santos????-------

Barry A. - 10-16-2005 at 12:09 PM

Yes, there are, and we happened to run into her when we visited about 2 years ago. (just kidding) We stayed in a brand new 4-plex within a big, and well established, mobilehome park right in town, and it was really nice, and not that expensive. It was run by a very nice Mexican women, at least I think she was Mexican. We really liked the town, and the people, but I know what you mean. I have always liked Todos Santos. All the restaurants we ate in were excellent, and all run by Mexicans-----really.

Actually, "Art and Beer" is also run by a Mexican, or he is hispanic, anyway. He is not a nice person, tho, which is very unusual. I understand that he originally lived in the USA. He hit me with his very unusual "rules" when my wife asked where the restroom was, (we had all already ordered very, very expensive drinks, but not my wife).
He very gruftly said, "your wife must order something before she can use the restroom". I said innocently that, "she was really not thirsty". He said, "then no restroom for her"----you know, like the "restroom N-zi". That is when I said, "your kidding, of course". He litterally went ballistic, and tried to kick us out. I refused to leave until I got my expensive ($12 usa) drink. (I had already paid for it). He refused to give me my drink, and that is about when I was ready to clobber him. I think I said something like, " I am going to burn this place down if you don't give me my drink". I got my drink, but he screamed a lot, cursed a lot, made many bad comments about my Gringo-ism, and tried to escort me out. I had never raised my voice, and was flabbergasted at his actions. I went outside to join my wife (she was so mad that she had to leave, or she would have thrown something at the N-zi) and to drink my very expensive drink, and left the glass in the parking lot. We were with another couple----they did not dare ask about the restrooms, and the N-zi left them alone.

Now, understand that I have been going to Mexico for some 50 years and NEVER had anything like this happen before, or since, and cannot recall ever having any major problems.

A "restroom N-zi", that is what he is. I am surprised that he is still in business.

David K - 10-16-2005 at 12:17 PM

"...he screamed a lot, cursed a lot, made many bad comments about my Gringo-ism..."

Doesn't this sound a lot like... ?? Oh, never mind!

JR, what are to talking about? Last time I was in Todos Santos (Dec. 2001), I didn't even stop!!! Oh, I guess because I had "so little time"!:lol::lol:

Actually we were trying to get to Baja Bus' place before dark... in Colonia Elias Calles! Max, Lynn, and their friends are great people... spent Christmas with them.

'Baja Bus' satellite and solar power expert of Baja Sur!

Lynn next to 'The Bus' that Max get's his handle from.

When was the first time?

jrbaja - 10-16-2005 at 02:23 PM

And what I'm talking about is your attacks on Me No now that he's not around.

Why don't you just chill out, pretend to know about Baja, and promote your site promoting everyone elses trips. Nevermind your chicken chit tactics.

Bajaboy - 10-16-2005 at 03:00 PM

Art & Beer near Pescadero - don't go

I've driven by that place many times...it just doesn't look inviting. After all, art does not go with beer.....

As for Pescadero, there are some cool little places to eat. A number of years back, some friends took us out for some burgers. Everything was great but here's the rub...we basically bought burgers that were cooked in someone's front yard. Let me clarify, you are actually in their front yard...imagine going to a friend's house for a bbq. We had to bring our own beer (no problem there) and I think the place was only open a few days a week. The place definately left me muttering "Only in Baja..."

Does anyone know of the place I am referring to?

Zac

He is very much around, and you just proved it, as I was responding to that 'new' Nomad 'malvina' or whatever Tom called himself... ja ja ja

JR, if you are such a great defender of the oppressed posters, do you post on Baja.net sticking up for me? MeNo has a ton of lies, slander, and even stoops so low to drag my son and daughter into his attacks against me... Do you tell him to shut up on Baja.net JR, huh???

Also, I do not pretend anything... My 40 years of traveling in Baja are real... If you have more Baja travel experience, then we are still waiting to see and read it... I have had 8 vehicles used to drive in Baja because of the number of miles put on those cars there and the years I have been driving since aI was 16. I have only seen ONE vehicle in all of your photos?

Do not be threatened by me... I am not in a contest with you or care if you know more Baja than me or not.

My first trip to Todos Santos was in 1966, by the way... my second was in 1974, third in 1985, and fourth in 2001.

What counts with the people here on Nomad is if they are interested in exploring places in Baja that are not in the tourist zones (like where you live), then they can count on my willingness to assist them, for free, on areas I do know about... and there are more than just a few, like you keep trying to get folks here to believe... Well, my photos and trip reports are proof of your hot air and jealous responces...

Have a nice day!:spingrin::spingrin::spingrin:

Hey, what's with the Hotel California joke? I kind of like the place, at least the courtyard for brunch.

T & T-----We liked Hotel California, too.

Barry A. - 10-16-2005 at 05:04 PM

net atmosphere, food was good, and it generally was just a lot of fun. Never stayed there----just eaten and drank there.

bajajudy - 10-16-2005 at 05:23 PM

TandT
Got me. Seems like a pretty nice place to me. Although the rooms are pricey. Of course, you dont have to worry about rooms, right!
We have recently put a rack of our books in the Emporia which includes Ann Hazard's new cookbook with 3 recipes from the Hotel California. The place is amazing...while we are there for maybe 30-45 minutes, I would bet that over 100 people waltzed through the shop. It is quite an attraction.

Den
And yes there are a few Mexicans left there. If you want to see them come to the festival....just this past weekend. We went one year and while sitting at the top of the ferris wheel, we looked down and saw not one gringo....not one. Weird!

Web Sites

jrbaja - 10-16-2005 at 05:48 PM

Although I don't chime into everyones posts with MY website with other peoples stories like you David, I do have one.

It's about my travels in Baja, and the people that live here. Their ranchos, many lakes, caves, areas that are not frequented by tourists like the places you post.

There are many stories, (1st hand from my own experiences in Baja) about many things besides my friends families and trucks.

It's a site about Baja, not me. I don't post GPS coordinates, maps or locations because I don't want caravans of people like you cluttering up these places
and disturbing lifestyles with your publicity and big mouth.

But, for those that weren't aware of a site about Baja, not David K., try http://groups.msn.com/TheBajasBestGuidesPhotoAlbum

turtleandtoad - 10-16-2005 at 06:04 PM

If you're can't find Mexicans in TS, you've never been to the town square or the church on Sundays (the childrens choir is great), or taken a bike ride through the valley.

David K - 10-16-2005 at 06:24 PM

Thank you JR, you are truly so much better than I could ever hope to be...:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

My posts are here on Nomad, so the people who see the maps and photos and GPS are the people you are blathering to...

So, in posting these places I guess it means you and your friends like MeNo will never be there... What a blessing indeed!

The majority of Nomads are GOOD people that have respect for others and the places in Baja they visit... the people you have so much spite for, yet expect handouts from so you can look important to the remote village you go to.

"Restroom N-zis" are not born that way. This guy is an arsshole but I understand why. ;D

I generally don't refuse anyone who is not a customer, use of my facilities if they are polite enough to ask. But more often than not, they don't. It's, "Hey man/dude, I'm gonna use...", or, "Where's your...", or, "Do I hafta buy something to...".

The absolute worst is when parents allow young children to use the bathroom unsupervised. Most of the time, they don't even bother to check after.

I haven't (yet) put up a sign saying, "Restrooms Are For Customers Only", but I am peeed that I would have to consider it.

I know, David--------

Barry A. - 10-16-2005 at 06:32 PM

but it is sure fun to pretend it did. (-:

By the way, I like your coordinates, pictures, references and threads to other peoples websites and trips, your photos, maps, and the dozens of other things you do to make Baja so much more interesting to the rest of us. Please keep doing just what you do, and thanks.

That would be a great trivia question, which came first, the Hotel California in TS or the Eagles song:?:

So where is the Eagles Hotel California? Or is there one?:?:

David K - 10-16-2005 at 06:39 PM

Along a long desert highway...

The road to Todos Santos was dirt when the Eagles song came out.

Lower California Guidebook c1962

Page 109: "... Travelers may spend the night at Hotel California (III), which has a bar, restaurant, and gasoline pump."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
III= 25 to 50 pesos per person, meals included. or 5 to 15 pesos, bed or room without meals. Peso was 8 cents at the time of printing. So: $2 to $4 US with meals, $0.40 to $1.20 US without.

Ah Haaaaaaaa!!!!! Hotel before Eagles-----

Tucker - 10-16-2005 at 10:40 PM

There used to be a Hotel California in Fresno (until they turned it into an old folks home), maybe a natural transition. With an equal amount of stretch, the lyrics could fit there.

Jack Swords - 10-17-2005 at 07:22 AM

Had a casa in Todos Santos when Spanish was spoken there for 11 years (1980s). Saw the Hotel grow, die, and be reborn again recently. Attached website has a good explanation of this legend.

bajanow - 10-17-2005 at 03:46 PM

In the '70s I went to Mainland Mexico to surf the long rights of Matachen Bay, San Blas. I took the bus and arrived at dusk at a washed out bridge on a dirt road. I walked with my back pack and surfboards about two miles and arrived at Pepe's Olas Altas hotel. My new friend, another surfer from La Jolla, said that Pepe was weird and would not sell us beer if we were not staying at the hotel. It was true, kinda. We ordered "dos cervesas" the limit of our Spanish, and were served our cold, sweat beaded drinks. As we were about to take our first sips, Pepe came up in a huff and asked if we were guests and if not, leave. We did get to drink the beer we had paid for. We did not stay at the hotel. I wonder if the Olas Altas is still there?

Marie-Rose - 10-17-2005 at 04:41 PM

Wow...gone for 3 days and I miss all the chat about my favorite place!!

Art & Beer
I couldn't agree more with the negative comments!! Very expensive drinks that they
sell under the premise of free appy's. The appy's consisted of less than fresh (6) oysters.
Having said that, the drinks were large and good. When we left we said we would never go back because of the owner's arrogance. He was rude and obnoxious although we were the only people in the place. The sunset was fabulous and he really does have a great location.

Hotel California
Apparently (I say this as my husband cannot be convinced that the Hotel California in Todos is not the one on the cover of the album) the "Hotel California" in the song was made up. Not sure what hotel the picture is of, but, my daughter had an opportunity to speak with Glen Fry in Calgary a few years ago, and he said "there is no such place...we made it up" Speaking of Glen Fry ....just saw the Eagles on Sat. night in Vegas. Absolutely the BEST concert!!! I highly recommend seeing them while they tour Calif.

No Mexicans in Todos Santos

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the myth is dissolved------well, I tried to perpetuate it.

We visited the hotel about 2 years ago, and we thought it was pretty neat---we were even invited by a Mexican family to attend a wedding reception there, which we did, and it was great!!!

bajajudy - 10-18-2005 at 08:41 AM

The people who own the hotel know full well that the Eagles were never there. When they bought it they just wanted to make a nice hotel....which they have certainly done
Did you know that the restaurant is named for a famous lady revolutionary from TS....El Coronela. There was a plaque across and up the street about her.

They used to sell their art in front of Medio camino in Baja Norte. When we ran across them in Pescadero they said they fled south because they were tired of the crowds of unappreciative weekend gringo tourists that never bought anything and wanted to get involved in the art scene in the Todos Santos area. Next time you need to use the facility just tell them that you bought some art from them when they were up north.
