Skype? Works well for me.JZ - 10-15-2005 at 09:10 PM
Skype is the best thing since sliced bread. I use it everyday for work and non-work. Voice quality varies by region and time of day (traffic load on
the network). Calls from China to the US can be crystal clear at times.
PC to PC calls are free. You can use SkypeOut to call from a PC to a regular phone for 2 cents a minute anywhere in the world.
It has a presence function (showing when your contacts are online) and also instant messaging.dug - 10-15-2005 at 09:12 PM
Skype works anywhere you have computer access or a phone. I used it extensively while living in Peru and I use it now for most of my international
calls. While at an internet cafe in Bahia de Los Angeles in April I used it to contact California, Peru, and England. I Use Skypeout to call any
phone from my computer and Skypein so my mother who doesn't have a computer can call a phone number which is a local call and it connects to my
computer wherever I am. It is free when talking computer to computer and with a broadband connection, it is usually very good quality. I also like the

Very happy with it for a year or so. Talk to wife/friends in USA a couple of times a day computer to computer and occasionally call on Skype out.
Good stuff
Download it directly from Skype - there have been other sites offering the download but they loaded you up with spyware. Direct from Skype - no
problems

I recommend Skype as well, been using it for 6 months...
Are you using phones or headsets?
Keri - 10-16-2005 at 11:52 AM
Which is best. Is there any brands that are better than others? I have to go buy something so I'd like to have some feedback, Thanks kJZ - 10-16-2005 at 11:57 AM
I just use the mic and speaker built into my laptop. It is like a speaker phone. You have to make sure the volume isn't too loud or you will have an
echo. A cheap headset does make voice quality a lot better.
Has anyone used the phone

Mac software from Skype just went on line on 10/5/2005. Unfortunately for me it only works on system 10.3 or later. I'm still on 10.2.wrk - 10-18-2005 at 05:03 PM
My son used Skype with a Mac when he was in France and called me often in Todos Santos- no problems at all communicating. Clear as a bell. I have a
head set and he was able to use his mic and speakers. However, you do need a high-speed connection. Won't work with dial-up in my experienceDiver - 10-18-2005 at 06:34 PM
Thanks for all the great responses !!
I've downloaded and used the service already from a dial-up connection.
There was a slight delay on a call from Brazil but it worked well enough.bajalou - 10-18-2005 at 10:06 PM
Got this article about Skype from ZDNet today - something to watch out for
*
Cybercriminals are spreading a malicious Trojan horse under the guise of an update to Skype, e-mail security firm MessageLabs said Monday.
The Trojan horse, a variant of IRCbot, arrives in an e-mail purporting to be an update to Skype, the popular Internet telephony application. Once
opened the malicious software displays a phony installation error message. It then blocks access to security updates and installs a back door on
computers, MessageLabs said in a statement.
The e-mail can have one of five different subject lines, which always refers to Skype. One, for example, reads: "Skype for Windows 1.4 - Have you got
the new Skype?"
The e-mail body text advertises the Skype voice-over-IP application and urges the user to run the attached file to find out more, MessageLabs said.
The e-mail carrying the Trojan horse isn't widespread; MessageLabs has intercepted 150 copies since Sunday. It is the first such attack that pretends
to be from Skype and users should watch out for such "social engineering," the company said.
Cybercriminals always try new things to dupe users into running malicious code. They have masked their Trojan horses as porn images, security updates,
messages from system administrators, news photos and many other things.
