Your best Baja investment?

BornFisher - 11-1-2005 at 11:46 PM

Hummmmm................ thinking of mine! Might be that taco at Yaqui`s, or that little casita at La Buff, and now at K-38, but really the best in life is free!! So what is the best investment in Baja?? It`s the time, effort and bonding with the people of Baja.
Actually I am thinking of good money spent down Baja way. I think my best was a guide, 3 mules, 3 burros, for my son and I to the cave painting, 3 days and 2 nights-----$120
But it could be a book, a special vehicle, secret map of surf/fishing spots, fishing guide, fishing boat, GPS, satellite radio, treats for some lucky children, drinks and wild times at Hussongs back in the good old days. I`m just so darned glad for what it all amounts to-- GREAT MEMORIES!!!

I agree the time and money spent on building friendships and relationships in Baja Ca. have Been some of my best investments. and also some of my worst. but the good ones way out weigh the bad ones.

Not so much yet

Al G - 11-2-2005 at 07:47 AM

I looking forward to investing a lot more time and money.
My investment in time looking into the heart and soul of the members of this board is paying great dividends. True Baja believers! Friends :yes:

Capt. Mike

I'm not with you, I have to side with Bruce, hes expressed my feelings, its not just about money and getting rich.

[Edited on 11-2-2005 by comitan]

It,s not all about getting rich

Al G - 11-2-2005 at 08:38 AM

I already know I'll never be rich and my interest is for a couple of home sites only as that's all I can do anyway. I also know I'm not the martyr type. What is happening is going to happen no matter how many martyrs there are. I wish I could have been lucky the last 20 years enjoying Baja as many of you have. I am sure I will enjoy Baja through it's many stages to come. please don't feel bad because "it is all good".

Bajabus - 11-2-2005 at 09:10 AM

10,000 square meters of beach front on the pacific just below Ts for $4.75 a sq meter 7 years ago. Now about $28 to $35.

Plus many good friendships and only 2 bad ones. (Beware of greeks in big houses they claim to own).

Money, investments =worry=tesion=heart problems=early demise.

wilderone - 11-2-2005 at 10:19 AM

JZ, Mike - you guys just don't get it. You're all about using, taking, acquiring, "mine", "yours." You want the sunsets, the pelicans skimming across the bay, the lapping of the water in the moonlight, the peaceful mornings, the sky full of stars, warm water to snorkle in - can you buy that? And in your quest for buying, supporting "development" (gag me), so you can have YOURS, what you seek actually disappears in the process. The secret is protecting what is really valued so it's still there when you want it.

rpleger - 11-2-2005 at 10:59 AM

I didn't come down here to invest, I came to live.

Allright so far.

Soulpatch nailed it

DanO - 11-2-2005 at 11:31 AM

Time is the best investment. Without that, none of the good things can happen.

That being said, I will say that the thirty bucks I shelled out for one of those upside down umbrella-like laundry drying clothesline thingies was one of the best investments ever.

Bajaboy - 11-2-2005 at 11:56 AM

I paid 15K for a new Toyota truck in 1993. I put 200k miles on it...many exploring Baja and the High Sierras. I just sold it for $3000 and bought a new truck. I'd say purchasing a reliable means of transportation to get me to the places I want spend my time has been my best investment.

I would be hesitant to include any real estate holdings as a best investment unless I have already spent enough time there to make it worth my while if I had to walk away at this time. It seems as if many are holding onto chickens before they hatch. But I am not in a position to worry about real estate holdings in Baja for the foreseeable future. So I guess my best Baja investments would have to be intrinsic. The time I have spent in Baja pay off when I have just about had it with doldrums of everyday work life. I think back on my experiences just kicking back by the beach, and I know that I will get to visit these beaches again. This helps me make it through. I'm just a junky when it come down to it.

Skeet/Loreto - 11-2-2005 at 01:37 PM

AG
Do not worry about to much Development causing Problems, if you like to Adventuer there are many places left to go to , get to know the Peole, live a very isolated Lifet!!

If you are into the Money thing there are many Places to go and join those who want to make Money.

Just go to Baja, look around, get off the Beaten Path, get to know the people, You will have an Investment beyond your Dreams. Skeet/Loreto

Skeet

I would like to think that your most important Baja investment would be your wife. And might that go for all the gringoes with Mexican wifes.

bajajudy - 11-2-2005 at 02:19 PM

As I look through my 1000's of Baja photos, I would have to say that the memories are well worth the time invested and I wouldnt give anything for them.
My lot out at Laguna Hills, which we bought to get away from the crowds and which is going to be surrounded by golf courses, will probably turn out to be the best financial investment.....but I agree with Pacoderm, I certainly have not spent that money YET.
My house is an investment that I fully expect to get my return on. Will I get rich off of it....I doubt it. BUT I surely have enjoyed and hope to continue enjoying what I have here.
My move to Baja turned out to be a terrific investment...........I invested in a new and better way of life. As my surroundings change, I will have to adapt to another new way of life.........will it be better....probably not here but maybe the next place down the road will be.

capt. mike - 11-3-2005 at 05:30 AM

Skeet's not married to a Mexican native. I've met his wife. She's a very nice lady, met her at the 1st book party at Pyramid.

look, i wasn't implying that riches wealth and or money are the ONLY keys to success and happiness, only that if one wants to get in on what will always be slow but lucrative ROIs in baja then now is as good a time as ever, and some properties are getting hot now, no pun intended.

i do not consider myself rich by most standards, i work long hard hours at risky and capital intensive endeavors to support my lifestyle and will for 10 more years because i LOVE what i do. if i hit big on something, great - and if it helps me make more $$$$$, ok too.

Some of you out there are against development, fine - go buy some dirt and preserve it. until then, let the mexicans decide what they want. let them prosper, its their fricking country.

think i'll go grab a napkin and design my new palapa deck.........it will cost me about $1500 to build on LEASED land, i'll never recoup it, and in doing it i'll help some guys with NOTHING buy clothes and food for their families for several months!!

Skeet/Loreto - 11-3-2005 at 07:20 AM

Thanks Mike!

One of the Reasons we left Loreto after all those Years was because my Lovely Wife helped me live my Dream in Baja and Now i am helping her live her Dream by becoming a Horsewomen.

for our house in ensenada. best investment. other than buying the ensenada house for us to live in and enjoy the rest of our life (lives) together...

but as others have noted, it is the change in lifestyle and reduction in stress and hassles that living in ensenada entails that will have the greatest return on investment.

capt. mike - 11-3-2005 at 04:03 PM
