What do you use yours for??

Al G - 11-2-2005 at 08:13 PM

Everyone seems to like/have Quads with handle bars.
I am looking for pros and cons of 4x4 Quad sideXsides.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outdoor/products/modelspecs/318/...
This thing can haul and tow.
I like the utility aspect (help with construction)over the sport aspect, but still want to explore.(has over head bars)
What do you have and why?
What is primary use?
How much use other then primary?

In my opinion the best use would be to use all Quads to make a Big Bonfire!!!!!

Yes i know that I am getting Old and Grumpy, but for those who like the Silence of Baja, the laping of the Water, the sound of Birds, those things do interfer!!!

Skeet,
I hear you. I also assure you My impact will be the minimum possible. My main need is boat launch and construction.
I also believe it would have less impact then most other 4x4 trucks when exploring. I have no need to spin my tires and act a fool as most Macho chest beater quad owners.
I'm not sure, as his response had few words, Comitan may fall in this group, and then his "no comment!!!!!!!!!!!" may be he agrees with you. Hard to tell.
To me a standard quad has limited upside unless you fall into the Macho chest beater category( I was one once), but that just something that runs through our vains and that we learn to control. Self esteem is one thing and worrying about your image is another.
I try my best to limit my comments of good and bad for Baja as I know so little. This is why I have great respect for this board. Hoping to make less errors with the help of the Nomads.
Still I would like to hear the reasons why not to buy a side x side quad.

Ok al

I just had too much to say and didn't feel like typeing anymore I think its overkill, too expensive, to hard to haul around, and I don't think it will be practical for a construction project its for hauling a deer out of the back woods. Your better off getting a HONDA used 250 doesn't have to be 4wd, I pulled 14' w/25Susuki O/B many years, and it will take you anywhere, a lot easyer to load unload, will fit in back of pickup. HONDA if you give it reaonable care will last as long as you need it.

Comiten,
Thank you very much!
Your experience is well received and appreciated. You have the same size boat and motor I settled on and am glad to hear you 250 handles it. This is the kind of info I need.
The price is the main reason I am asking, but would spend the $10,000.00 if if I can justify it.
Haven't heard any pros so may be the end of story.

Al

One thing you should know the boat was not on a trailer, I had a shaft through the boat at balance point and wide tires. Also had a rack on front and back and used to load up the front rack for weight in the front because if the sand was soft the front end would lift.

Get a Suzuki Samari 4x4.
In the states around $3000.00
Carrys people, cargo, launch boats and are quiet.

Quads are for old farts who can't ride a motorcycle anymore.

I use these in San Juanico to haul the panga/waverunners in/out of the water. They also have a dump bed in the rear that I use to haul rock, gravel, sand, firewood, etc. It also is good for the "mercardo runs" in town. They are also handy for trips to the beach with chairs umbrellas, coolers and the like. The upfront rack has a cooler/storage area built-in as well. Having a four wheel drive option is nice for the exploration to the remote outlaying areas. I would rate them a "B" overall for the two years I have had them. Only real issues have been the rear brake master cylinder failing on one and the throw off of engine heat from bothj of them. Most folks here put side holders on them for sufboards to visit the various surf breaks.

A picture of them

We also have the Suzuki Samuari to haul stuff...I have found that having both types just add to the options afun of Baja!

I've got two Samurais down here and they're the best buy I've made in ORVs. $2200 and $1600 and I'm always looking for more.

Bonfires are a good idea for most ATVs. Something about them seems to turn most people into animals. I've told people (including one neighbor whose kids and friends have a dozen of them) that modifying the exhaust on one should be a felony punishable by death.
