Should have thought to ask one of the nomads that entered before they left for Mulege. Pompano would have done it for us unlucky ones stuck up
here.

fishing conditions were horrible the first day and it doesnt look any better today ( from what i gathered at the jungle there was lots of chumming
going on :lol. there were 8' swells off chivato which is as far as i made it out. there was a few yellowtail weighed in (6 i believe) with the biggest being 36
lbs. most of the yellowtail are being taken out of san marcos.

OK, the news is out. Its not been announced by any of the judges but the word is out that 1st place was won by two San Lucas Cove fishermen.
The Team of David Hughes and Alan Lewis, call sign 'Deep Dave' in boat Robalo won first place.
Kudos to those brave souls who fought the weather and came in with 3 30#+ fish.rpleger - 11-13-2005 at 11:29 AM
David Hughes won with two fish totaling just over 68lbs.
Lots of fun was had by all at the weigh-in at JUNGLE JIM'S.
Big party today, 2:00pm at Corona Plaza, down town Muleg?.

Well, now I don't feel so bad about missing the tourney, but I sure as hell, feel bad about missing the PARTY! Congrates to the brave guys who faced 8' waves. I would not have been out there in my tin. I would like to have
been there to raise my glass to them. Anyone fall off thier stool?
Anyone have pictures?
Hope to be there next year!

tourney
AcuDoc - 11-14-2005 at 10:29 AM
As it was stated the fishing conditions were terrible. I just got back last night from SLC and Dave/Alan were a great team. I've known them both for
some time. Everyone else at the meeting I met all seemed great too. Myself and Hook were in the tourney as well but came up with a blank both days. We
bobbed in the swells and wind with the best of them in my 16' klamath.
The second day was worse then the first as the swells were so huge from the first days winds. That and the wind that day too. The only saving grace is
that the water was warm as it was a very wet ride to and from the sea mounds. It was so bad the second day that I handled the boat as Hook did his
best to stay down with 12 oz. weight fishing nice macks to no avail. Bait was very easy to make almost every day.
What hasn't been stated is how great the fishing was the few days before the tourney. It really was Lake Cortez. Water temps in the high 70's and is
smooth as silk. Hook and I caught yellowtail, yellowfin, dorado, double hookup on sailfish, and I got my first marlin. We fished a couple days off
Tortuga and everyday off San Marcos for close to a week with close too 70-80 miles a day on the water. Inshore was also great for sierra, cabrilla,
even firecracker yellows.
The ride back to the US was uneventful and I'm already looking forward to my next trip down....4 1/2 months and counting.rpleger - 11-14-2005 at 12:36 PM
A good time was had by all and everyone is looking forward to the next tournament in feburary.
Thanks to all that entered and fished.
I'll file a report later, but....
Hook - 11-14-2005 at 11:54 PM
at least at the north tip of San Marcos, there's no way the seas were 8 foot, even on the second day. I'd say more like 3-6 in gusts occasionally
reaching 20-25 knots.
Still it was the snottiest conditions I've been in since a bad day off Isla San Martin in a whopping 19 foot boat several years ago. This time we were
in a 16 foot Klamath.Bob and Susan - 11-15-2005 at 05:51 PM
Steve O'Neal's "ride" is? Trying to remember which boat might have been his out at San Marcos.
8 foot
mulege marv - 11-16-2005 at 04:10 PM
well sorry i was on the water, hook. and for a swell to come over the bow of this boat i think it would have to be a little higher than 3' . when the
boat behind you says your boat was disappearing in the swells, sorry this boat has a little more than 3' out of the water, but whatever, it was uglyBruce R Leech - 11-16-2005 at 08:04 PM
don't you measure a swell from the sea level?
3 foot swell + 3 foot trough makes a 6 foot sea. or am I wrong?comitan - 11-16-2005 at 08:18 PM
Wave height is measured Trough to Crest.Bruce R Leech - 11-16-2005 at 09:03 PM
what about swell?Bruce R Leech - 11-16-2005 at 09:09 PM

Both Hook and I agree that the waves with swells were in the 5-6 foot range. Probably the occassional bigger.
Waves
Al G - 11-17-2005 at 01:47 PM
Were there any 14' tins out there? Not that I would be out in a 16'-18'. Unless I could talk one of salts into driving, to much of a rookie!

Acudoc and I lasted about 5 hours
Hook - 11-17-2005 at 06:21 PM
each day in a 16 foot Klamath. It's a center console. I cant imagine what it would be like in a stern steering boat.
We were the smallest boat I saw out there.
The most uncomfortable part of the days were returning to port with the wind and swells on our starboard hindquarter. I was constantly working the
trim to get the most out of the waves push. We were pretty wet, but never took a wave over the side, transom or bow, even simply sitting in the slop
and trying to catch fish.Bruce R Leech - 11-17-2005 at 08:44 PM
starboard hindquarter? Hook I think you have coined a new nautical term.
I think I was dreaming
Hook - 11-18-2005 at 10:40 AM
about that local girl behind the bar at the Pelicano......
Forgive me if that's your wife, Bruce.
