You can tell winter is approching! The checkpoint at El Marmol has moved from tents to KM 146 into the old restruant on the east side and they are
making it into a permanent base. Through search northbound, wave through southbound.
The checkpoint at the airport/Highway 5 intersection in San Felipe is back in operation after several months of inactivty. Usual casual searching
northbound, wave through southbound.
The checkpoint at Gonzaga had something new southbound, on Nov. 9th they wanted to see picture ID's which they have never asked me for before.
Northbound on 5 at El Crucero they are searching very throughly lately, southbound a wave through.
Ran on to a roving patrol at Matomi Wash last night which is also something new for the south 5 area, also met a highway patrol truck just north of
Puertocitos.
I think I will write a letter to President Bush saying that if the USA can spend this much money on road stops in Mexico why don't they do it on I-8

We had quite a long wait at the El Marmol checkpoint. They were going through everything on every vehical. Even a couple of moter cycles had to
unpack. It looks like the check point north of Guerrero Negro is no longer in use. Nobody their when we went through.David K - 11-16-2005 at 06:48 PM
Well, that is wierd... We flew by the El Marmol turnoff twice, a couple weeks ago... and no checkpoint then.
The 'rancho' near the turnoff is SONORA. The next 'rancho' north is the abandoned, burned TRES ENRIQUES.
Both Tres Enriques and Sonora moved to be next to the new highway over 30 years ago, from the old main road... which is just over the hill, north-east

I ran into a roving patrol and an impromptu inspection on the dirt road between El Arco and Vizcaino. As I was coming south I saw a Hummer stopped in
front of me. One of the soldiers was spying me with binoculars as I drove up. The inspection was quick.
There have been roving patrols in this area for several years.

That is because of the water that flows year round in these canyons... used to irrigate 'cash crops'...
This photo was taken in Agua Caliente canyon, a short distance before the hot springs, on Dec. 31, 2000. The 'cilantro' had not yet been planted...
but the new drip system was working on this terrace above the stream, hidden under the mesquite trees from the air... My return to Agua Caliente in
2004 found all the drip irrigation tube chopped up by machete, (by the army?). The same thing was seen in Parral canyon.
