From Hwy. 1 to the fork north of San Antonio the road is very easy in 2WD, all graded and well signed.

This goes through some great boojum country!

Here is a BABY boojum!

My Tacoma on the good road near San Antonio... this changed greatly as we headed down towards El Cipres, as all the mountain ranches no longer use the road to El Socorro it seems, so they don't maintain it like they do this one.

David K - 11-28-2005 at 01:24 PM

Can anyone explain this?

Beautiful country... we saw no other vehicle the entire dirt road part of the day!

David K - 11-28-2005 at 01:28 PM

In the next part, we continue north, see blue palms, and the greatest thrill for me: finding a petroglyph site I did not know existed!

deformed Cordon?

bugdude - 11-28-2005 at 03:07 PM

This giant cardon cactus has produced a branch with abnormal (fasciated), fan-shaped growth, often termed "monstrose" growth form, unlike the normal, cylindrical growth. Such events are quite rare. When this deformation occurs at the top of one of the prominent "arms" it is often referred to as "crested." There is no agreement on what causes the abnormality, but damage from insects or frost are among the possibilities. Once it has been formed, this type of growth is often perpetuated in all the subsequent growth of the branch.

Thanks David K. Always enjoy your photographic posts! Regards to Baja Angel.

Good stuff DK. Gracias

Sallysouth - 11-28-2005 at 07:14 PM

The pics of the cactus kinda look like pre-historic/dinosuarish! Really awesome! Beautiful "dancing boojum" also! What am I missing in the "something weird" on the Cardon????:?:

Ken Bondy - 11-28-2005 at 07:26 PM

Sally it's the thing that looks like a giant cowpie all wrapped around the branches of the cardon.

David K - 11-28-2005 at 07:30 PM

Don't you think that wavey line growth is weird? I posted two picxs of it and bugdude responded and included one of the two...

I hope you guys are checking out the other threads... I broke it into 4 parts because those on dial up can not view photos when too many are posted in a single thread... I know because I used to be on dial up!

Thanks for the nice words!

Great Trip David
