Baja Mil Rm 45ish

We had a good time at the race. Left Morro Bay on the 15th for Ensenada. Stopped at our favorite taco stand "El Recreo" on the way in, before heading for the house. Friends pulled in around 3 am, so it was a long day/night.

Wednesday morning we hooked up the Sportmobile trailer, loaded up everything including the couch, packed the truck and our friend Cy's Blazer. Our neighbor's Jeff and Jamee followed along as well. Headed for El Vale in Cantu for Tecate, food and misc. supplies.

We intended on getting fuel in Maneadero, but didn't. Found a new spot (for us) just before heading out on Hwy. 3 towards San Felipe. A helpful hint, the door for the men's bano doesn't lock people out, but will lock you in. Be sure to take the key with you or have someone handy on the outside.

We had already decided that we were going to the same spot where we watched the 500 in June. The policia weren't stopping traffic going in on the race course in Ojos Negros towards Tres Hermanos like they were last year. We were early enough going in this time to avoid any hassles or being charged the 50 pesos that was demanded of our friend Jeff who suprised us the day before the race.

We drove out to rm 45, circled the wagons and set up for the evening.

We woke up Thursday morning and began the task of setting up our camp. This year's theme was " Central Coast Tecate Crew" which was displayed on a large banner made for us by our Tecate distributor. 90 ft. of Tecate pennants weren't enough so we improvised with an additional 30ft. of rope with shiny red Tecate cans zip tied along it's length. Our Mexican flag was raised, Christmas lights were strung, Palm trees, tiki torches, pink flamingos, ez up, fake grass, two large area rugs, a 6 ft. blow up Tecate bottle, 3 ft. Tecate can and a comfy sleeper sofa helped set the stage for race day. Two giant 12 ft. tall Tecate christmas trees were fastened to either side of the race course and we also had two other signs ready for the Pabloff racing team as well as Desert Bull racing.

Race day was awsome. The first bike came through around 7am and it was non stop all day. We decided to set up a "Boobie trap" for Desert Bull, but he missed it as she had to go the bathroom before Tim made it by our campsite. Our buddy Cy tried his best to fit into Christy's plastic Tecate pennant / duct tape bikini bottoms, but he didn't seem to have the same "Boobie trap" effect on the racers as they passed him by.

During the day we listened along with Weatherman, watched the racers fly by still heading south and readied ourselves for the night's racing excitment as they would be coming back the opposite direction.

The generator was started as it got dark, lighting the 90 foot stretch of Christmas lights. The campfire was lit, Smores were sticky, dinner was a community event. Some took naps, more duct tape was passed around, and we were ready for round two of the race to the finish. Motorcycles, trucks and buggies roared by all night and a few stragglers still followed on into Saturday afternoon.

We cleaned up our camp, which isn't quite as fun as setting it up, and were heading out back towards Hwy. 3 around 2 pm. We heard on our radio that Brittany Sanchez was heading our way so our caravan pulled over to cheer her on as her car 552 passed us by.

We met again at the house, showered (which felt great after 4 days) and shared photos that had been downloaded on the laptop from 4 different cameras during the event. We ended the night up at Gordo's for dinner.

Cy, Christy and Curt had to go home on Sunday, taking them ten and a half hours. We stayed for Thanksgiving, that will be another story.

Now that we're home, it was a whirlwind of a trip. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but we had another great race trip. The Wall of Shame at work has some fun and interesting photos up right now...

I'll post some photos IF I was able to reduce them correctly.

Saludos!

It got late last night while I was posting and fooling around with the photos (thanks dk and my HIW for the photo resizing info).
Here's a couple more photos.

One of the many low flying helicopters.

This truck had an exhaust problem and pulled into camp. Cy had the opportunity to pull out his tool kit and give a hand.

You did good Paulina!

TMW - 12-4-2005 at 11:41 AM

Great report. I'm glad none of the racers were hurt by the booby trap. Ha Ha.

Paulina - 12-4-2005 at 12:22 PM

TW,
From what we heard on the radio and from reading the various boards after returning state side, the boobie traps were pretty bad. I wonder if they are such a problem when the course goes to La Paz?

Christy was pretty harmless...

I can't say the same thing for Cy though,

Paulina - 12-4-2005 at 12:32 PM

And no body knows what the two of them were up to in this photo...

Paulina - 12-4-2005 at 12:34 PM

We think that this may have had something to do with it.

TMW - 12-5-2005 at 01:13 PM

If I had been racing I might have crashed seeing those two guys. I would have been wide open to get away.
