Puertecitos(Playa Escondida) Trip Report "Dad, look Dolphins!"

Just got back from an overnighter down in Puertecitos. The road past the asphalt is worse than it was only 4 weeks ago. There are some spots on the road that forced me to drive 5-10mph. I use a big 4x4 with 35in tires. Usualy I try and drive fast, this time I went medium.

I love the road. I dont think its ever gonna get fixed. I saw several people along the way in the 2 wheel drive street cars that where making it no problem, just real slow. The weather yesterday was so nice I didnt want to leave. It was not too hot, not too cold. A very slight breeze, and the sea was flat as a calm mountain lake. I went down to pay some rent and check out my house. Everything is comming along great! After 6 years of trying I think I have finaly found a method of construction and a company that can realy walk the talk. Even though my bathroom is still not ready, the Campo had water in the tank and the 3 flushing toilets where clean and in operation (consistant for 7mo!!)

Anyways,

When I woke up in the morning I was treated with a beautifull sunrise. Then as if to tease me into comming back, about 1 hr before I am supposed to leave, a pod of dolphins comes over to my place.

There where at least 50 of them. They came into 5 feet of water, just about 15 feet from the shoreline. They where so close that I could hear the "huff" of air as they would surface. They lingered around the front of the house and played for at least 30min. I had my 7 year old son with me and he was totaly excited to be able to see the dolphins play. I wanted to run down to the beach and over the rocks and jump in and swim with them, but the last time I tried that I almost broke my ankle and by the time I got into the water they where too far away to interact with me and they swam away. I have yet to dive and swim with a dolphin my entire life. It is one of my dreams. I want to swim with wild ones in baja.

We tore ourselfs away from the beach and headed home. The road was nearly void of traffic on the way back, and the border wait at the new crossing in Mexicali was less than 10min. The drive back through the baja desert was spectacular with horse tail shapped orange clouds in the sky.

I am heading back down to join the newyears party in the town of Puertecitos!

I came back and then had to go shopping for gifts.....

All I can say about the shock transfer from a beach in Baja to a isle in Costco is


There where no big fish caught, and I did nothing spectacular like ride a whaleshark.

I just walked down the beach with my son and watched my dogs jump in the water.

It felt so good, I cant explain it.
