The Spanish caption engraved above the doorway says (in English): Head and Mother of the Missions of Lower and Upper California.

I have an issue with authors who call the mission of San Diego the 'first' mission in California!:fire::no:

'California' was the name of the peninsula long before the land north of the peninsula also was included... as 'Alta California'... Funny how things got reversed!

Great photos!! Do you have more mission pictures? Maybe some can be added to those taken by Jack Swords and others at http://vivabaja.com/bajamissions ?

Leaving in an hour for San Felipe!

I have a few more but those were the best of the bunch. Feel free to add them to your site. :D

Mission San Fernando Velicata?

David K - 1-17-2006 at 07:39 PM

Man, that is an old photo Robert! I was stumped until I recognized the far left wall end. Today, there is no road as shown... just foot paths.

Bob, you are closer than Joe with your guess...

Look at Dr. Jackson's (academicanarchist) photo at the far left end...

Here it is now... from the other side...

Mission El Rosario?

Skipjack Joe - 1-18-2006 at 11:13 AM

The one you're showing David appears to be Mission El Rosario. I am using the following link to match up your photo. These are photos of Marquis McDonald (no relationship to DeSade).

First Rosrario Site

Yep, it is a shot I took 30 years ago of the ruins at the first Rosario mission site.
