BOLA fishing report for xmas

4baja - 1-13-2006 at 07:16 AM

we fished the area for 7 days with david and yvon on his boat (thanks dave) for mostly yellows with some bottom fish mixed in. dave ran the boat allmost every dave to points north with good results on yellows to 16 pounds and jaw fish, sculpin, triggers, white fish and cabria mixed in. we fish all iron on 20 to 40 pound test on mostly torium 20 and 30 reels(high speed) on many brands of poles includeing cal star and seeker. the water was mostly glass every day due to the rain up north with water temps around 62 to 65 and air temp around 78 degrees. we fished mainly the big island due to low wind conditions and down to 165 feet deep with lots of current and bait present. there were alot of fish belowe us and if you had live bait you could have cleaned up but we averaged around 5 fish every mourning with a high of 12 one day. i strongly recomend getting up early(dark) and getting live bait and useing dropper loops when you can. the boat aroud us was catching 2 to every 1 that we caught useing live bait but personaly i like jig fishing. phils boat (the lizard) next to us was hooking up too and scored the fish of the week with a 16 pounder at los machos. will be down in 4 weeks to do some work and hopefully the weather will cooperate for another great week of fishing.:bounce::coolup:

thanks for the report

Really appreciate the detail.

Were there any fish at the north end of Smith? Did you fish Guadalupe reef?

smith was dead and the reef produced a few but mostly the big island. there was lots of current the week we were there so you needed heavy iron to get down.
