Claming

mcquerry - 1-23-2006 at 09:51 PM

Hi. I am getting ready to make a trip to the Mulege area and would like to do some claming and need to know if it is safe to eat them this time of year? Thanks in advance. Tom

David K - 1-23-2006 at 10:15 PM

You do know it is illegal for non Mexicans to collect clams...??? (this includes all shell fish...)

They sure are great fun to eat, however!;D

I will let some Mulege area Nomads give you the safe to eat dates... if it matters...

Claming

mcquerry - 1-23-2006 at 11:19 PM

Thanks David, I have done some Claming in the Mulege area before and your right, they are great. The last time I did any claming there my truck was broke in to and I lost about 400.00$ in cash so the clams were paid for. I still need to know if there are still months that clams are not good to eat? Thanks again Tom

David K - 1-24-2006 at 12:55 AM

Understood... Nomads Pompano, Marv, Bob and Susan, and others from Mulege should have an answer...

In 1976 at El Requeson, in about 2 feet of water and beyond... all the butter clams you could eat... My dad loved it there!! Our first time camping at El Requeson was in 1966... I was too youing to remember all the details, but I bet the clams were in 1 inch of water and beyond! :P:bounce::biggrin:

Clamming...?

Pompano - 1-24-2006 at 04:46 AM

Clamming is illegal. We do not clam. If if was legal to clam we would not do it during any Red Tide. Also if we were to ever clam it would make no difference what month we might do it...or whether the month has an 'R'. IF I WERE to clam I would head for the south end of the Bay at low tide and walk out as far as I could with a bucket and rake. Sit on my butt and rake the clams to me. But this is impossible to do because tourists are not allowed to clam. However you can go out there and make nice sand castles, like we are doing here.

i was told by a good friend in ensanada that the only clam you cant take is the pismo on the pacific side, we do take them to make clam c-cktails when were at the sevens.

Bob and Susan - 1-24-2006 at 07:48 AM

They are too tough...we don't like clams.

Fish and chicken is way better

I did talk to some neighbors last week that eat some...no problems:)

Tough?

Pompano - 1-24-2006 at 08:02 AM

Naw....try them at El Patrons...the old Almeja by the lighthouse. They use an old recipe Johnny Tequila showed Ramon when he was still alive..(Ramon, that is, JT is still kicking up in Utah.) "Choco-lah-tey Erotica." Simply delicious on the grill with some chopped onions, tomato bits, cheese, garlic bread crumbs, and tobasco. Yummy with a Pacifico on the seaside tables. The steamers are tender too, with some buttery sauce.

Bob and Susan - 1-24-2006 at 08:26 AM

Don't they do something to the labito?

Susan may get out of control:lol:

On those clams creating a love-fest problem: Reminds me of an old friend, Jean Pierre, a French Algerian who ran the Hacienda Hotel and adjoining Casablanca Cafe some years ago. (Where the Pelican Reef is today)

Nicknamed 'The Golden Piccolo' by Mulege townspeople, Jean Pierre was quite the ladykiller and liked to eat those 'Chocolate Eroticas.' He would often tell me that he had eaten a dozen the night before,... "but only eleven worked!" He was held in awe by us mortals.

ArvadaGeorge - 1-24-2006 at 09:07 AM

What's the story on the ones that don't open when steamed

Bruce R Leech - 1-24-2006 at 09:37 AM

stubborn

DanO - 1-24-2006 at 10:39 AM

Not stubborn, dead. Best not to eat them.

In the mag bay flats ,at low tide , you can pick the clams right out of the mud. Filled a 44 qrt. cooler with butter and manilla clams within one hour.
Even at regular tides, you can rake them in in 4 inches to 2 ft of water. Funny that the natives never seem to bother with them.:?::?::?:

like taking candy from a baby.....

Look for the pelos verdes...

vgabndo - 1-25-2006 at 06:22 PM

A few years ago the guys at Santa Rosaliita showed me how to watch, when the last 1/8" or less of a wave was receding, for tiny "V" marks in the water. If the source was tiny green hairs, the hairs were attached to the hinge of a Pismo Clam.

Without a clam fork, we easily picked-up a dandy chowder right in front of our camp. We've done the same thing at San Quintin, but the clams were more scarce.

Green hairs below.

intriging...also a tried and true method for sand crabs. except the green hairs are antenae.

Clam update...

Don Alley - 1-29-2006 at 08:37 AM

We clammed the south end of Bahia Conception Saturday. Tons of butter clams, but reports of a resident thief are true. We had nothing of great value in the car, but mistakenly locked it. :o

The thief at least broke a small window. Lost was a pair of shoes, my favorite pair! :fire:

I bought those shoes in Ciudad Constitution. I'll have to go back...hope I don't get another tcket.

The clams were good, some steamed, some just tossed on the grill.

Beware at south beach. got expense clams. One side window $ 380.00 us, one cell phone, binox, and one digital camera. Parked on beach but they broke window on other side of car. Had to belly crawl to car for me nor to see them. Leave someone with car at all times

The beach at the upper end of Bahia Concepcion, near the abandoned trailer park, is notorious for rip-offs. I can only believe that someone who lives nearby lies in wait at low tide for people who come clamming. We know now to park our car so that we can watch the doors and windows. One time the guy showed up as soon as we put our buckets down and began digging. He ran when we spotted him. The last time I went the military was there. I told them what a bad place it was and they stayed there and watched our car the entire time we clammed, then packed up and left when we were done...........I didn't even have a chance to say thanks. Rip-offs are a problem all around the bay, but especially in this place. Maybe the solution is not to have ANYTHING valuable in your car and just leave it wide open. Or tie your dog to the bumper.

Pompano - 1-31-2006 at 09:39 AM

Hmmm.. Conception Bay southend clamming beach is getting notorious for rip-offs? Guess we are very lucky because we have never lost a thing and never even locked our rigs. Was there yesterday dropping off some hitchhikers and saw nothing strange or anyone around at all.

Sorry to hear there is a thief working that area. Maybe we will work a little 'sting' operation there rather than go hunting doves?

We did exactly that some years back, just below the microwave tower south of Mulege. The Honeymoon Beach Bandit caught in a sting by a policeman hiding in the shower of a parked motorhome. That thief spent the rest of his ...er...honeymoon...in the prison near Sta. Rosalia. Ah...you gotta love the variety of Baja times.

Pompano, I hope you take on the assignment. Our pop-up camper has a make-shift patch job where these guys sliced it open a couple of years ago. They trashed the inside looking for stuff and finally left with a couple of ancient cameras. We had just taken a short walk down the beach with our coffee cups...........And now I hear stories of cash being taken from glove boxes in locked cars and of Don Alley's window being smashed in. I would spend a lot more time there if I wasn't afraid to leave my vehicle unattended. Now we're just a little more paranoid when we camp anywhere, and put the top of the camper down and lock it up tight whenever we take a walk or go swimming. You won't see them until they appear out of nowhere and before you can catch them they disappear into the desert. They have their system fine tuned. I heard about the Homeymoon Beach bandit. Glad they caught him! Now if someone can just nab these guys...........................

Let's Do It!

As soon as Paula gets her window fixed, we can use her car as bait! We'll put Lucky and Fillmore inside, and uh, well, I don't know. Maybe damage his hearing?

Getting the window fixed:

So we were refered to a body guy here. "He does great work. He'll fix it up like new."

We go see him, he says , sure, no problem, just pull your car in here in my shop. "Ok," he says, "Give me the glass and I'll put it in." What?! We have to get the glass? "Can't you order it?"

No, he can't order glass for a Honda.

But we phoned a place in La Paz, they can have it in abot 10 days. We put 1/2 in their account ($100) and maybe, while we are in La Paz getting it fixed, I can find a swell pair of shoes to replace the one's "M" (an initial left in the dust on the rear window) stole.

But I got three yellowtail and a grouper (!) yesterday so things are looking good!

bajajudy - 2-1-2006 at 11:58 AM

Passed that way a few days ago and it looked like a red tide...How is it there, Pompano

bajajudy...si, red tides were here

Pompano - 2-3-2006 at 02:55 PM

This photo was taken about the time you passed through, Judy.

WARNING TO NEWBIES: RED TIDES....Definetely NOT a good time to be eating shallow water clams.

Now the red tide is gone...for awhile. Maybe I will post a red tide report from now on just to keep people from getting sick. I ate a few years ago during a red tide and can recall quite clearly how much I thought I was going to die.
