Day of the Dead in TJ

Anonymous - 11-1-2003 at 10:03 AM

I live in San Diego. The resent fires have messed up my work schedule and I have had to cancel my trip to Los Vegas. Compared to what others are going through, this is nothing, so I am not complaining. But I now have Sunday free and I thought I would go to Tijuana with some friends for the Day of the Dead. As this is completely last minute, I am not exactly sure what to do there. Any suggestions? I have been to TJ several times, so I am not looking for stuff that is there all the time, but things to do to celebrate the holyday. Will there be parades and such? Anybody know a schedule? Is it a morning thing, a night thing or an all day sort of thing? I did a search here but could not find information about things going on in TJ.
Thanks, Wayne

Pack a picnic lunch and find a cemetary. Then have your lunch. Bring a camera. Cool stuff to photograph.

Ensenada has some Day of the Dead commemorations in its municipal cemetery and I also believe the municipality has arranged something. However, we went a few years ago and it wasn't much. A few altars put up at the cemetery, mostly I think to show schoolkids how it's done on the mainland. With the American influence Halloween seemed to be much more prevelent theme. You might check Ensenada web site. For future years if you have the time and money I definitely recommend going to Oaxaca for Dia de Los Muertos. Really fascinating.
