That is the way it is here is the solar section of El Dorado Ranch here in San Felipe, We have had Telnor and DSL for a couple of years now. Had dial-up for a little time before that. Rumor has it we will have electricity in 10 years, mas-o-menos.

Rummer in Coyote Bay? Arggh....I can't resist....

Ah, that rummer would be me. I first started drinking rum/coke way back in the sixties, when I concocted the first Bacardi Bimbo.....but wait, that's a different story!

Phones in the Bay, Bruce? But we already have had them for quite some time...

Let's see now.

I had my first phone installed at our Conception Bay house about 6 years ago. It was a regular desk phone. We operated off of the cell tower at Guaymas and had to angle the roof antenna towards that direction 'just ever so carefully' to get a good signal. I can recall lining up the L-shaped antenna right at the 'Beagle', an amigo's sailboat on a permanant anchorage out front...a good point of aim. You bought prepaid timecards from the company...100p to 500 p, I believe. Buy a 500p card and get a few free minutes. (This was a very expensive house phone when your wife has 6 sisters, 5 brothers, and parents to talk to every day...sigh.)

Here's a funny story on that first house phone.

The tech from Loreto had just finished the antenna and phone installation and he says to me..."Rogelio, it is ready. Listo."

I ask Felipa.."So, who should we call first?"
She says, "Your mother."

I thought this is a very good idea as Mom is forever complaining that she has no way to phone us on a regular basis.. this event will make her very happy indeed.

So I dial her Fargo, ND number..and Carumba! It works, the phone is ringing! The phone is picked immediately and I recognize her voice saying, "Hello?" "Hi Mom!", I say rather excitedly, "Guess what? You have the honor of receiving the very first phone call from our Baja house! We now have a regular phone, isn't that great?" There was a slight pause and then Mom says.."I don't know who this is..you sound fuzzy... you'll have to call back...I am on the toilet." ....and she hung up. Our first phone call.

Another rumor making the rounds is that Carlos (Telmex) Slim is investing heavily in the area with an eye toward development.

...was little-known species of marine kangaroo living along the northern shores of Australia, mate. You could usually spot them in the wee hours of the morning while hunting the outback for Snipe...
