As for Soledad, I'm assuming you mean the south end, accessible from Puerto Santo Tomas. Folks camp out there periodically and I've heard no reports
of trouble. However, there is a squabble going on between the owner of the PST resort and the guy who owns the land on the Soledad side of the ridge,
as a consequence of which the Soledad owner has installed a trailer on the ridge road where his "security guard" lives. He will demand $5 for you to
pass up the road.
As for launching a boat, I'd say you're better off launching at the port's boat ramp. The beaches on the Soledad side are all rock and largely
inaccessible, and surf and wind conditions there can get very ugly.
If you're talking about the inner bay/beach at Soledad accessible by way of a cutoff road about 2/3 of the way out from Hwy 1 to La Bocana, there is a
sand beach there. However, the last time I was out that way (several years), the road was gated and camping was not allowed by the owers. Too bad,
because it's one of the most beautiful spots on that area of coast.
Thanks for the info....

Great, now I've got the 5-0 theme music running over and over in my head and I can see the titles . . . "and featuring Kam Fong as Chin Ho!" Whatever
happened to James MacArthur, anyway?
appears to have biographical info as recent as March 2005. Apparently he's still alive.
i read something recently about Jack Lord's estate being worth an incredible fortune. He died in 1998, but apparently owned some very expensive real
estate in the islands. I think he owned some hotels on Waikiki. He was pretty generous to charitable organizations in Hawaii, too.
Glad you are apparently old enough to appreciate my humor.Bob H - 1-30-2006 at 04:57 PM

I've never tried to launch at Puerto Santo Tomas, but I've been there quite a few times, by land and by sea both. And it looks to me that the launch
ramp the Mexicans use (close to the point) could get dicey in a north-west swell. Of course, those are rare conditions over there I asked Sam
Saenz about that once and he stood there, shaking his head, commenting how the Mexican fishermen are loco to do it .
I would look at launching over the sand at La Bocana and anchoring with the other pangas in the lee of the point. I'm sure you can find a ride to/from
the boat.
Bottom fishing is great out by the rocks and off the point in the right conditions. Soledad is swept practically non-stop by big swells that break
right in the bay, and would probably make life difficult in a small boat and/or without a dedicated helmsman.bajaandy - 1-30-2006 at 06:52 PM
I once launched a tin boat from the Puerto Santo Tomas boat ramp. A bit on the sketchy side, but not a big deal. (I did have a 4 x 4, so I felt a
little safer than if I hadn't had it.) That turned out to be one of the best fishing trips I've had... three guys in a tin boat, 13 miles out in the
Pacific catching dorado on cut bonita. Caused a bit of a stir when we got back with the dorado, which apparently isn't seen much around there. A
couple of fish and we were free and clear of any launch fee.
Nice job on the Hawaii Five -O pun there Hook! And I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one to get a kick out of "and featuring Kam Fong as Chin Ho!" .
Brings back memories.DanO - 1-30-2006 at 07:04 PM
I agree, launching off the boat ramp at the end of the port in a big swell is a sketchy endeavor. In fact, the big swells in December shut down
pretty much the whole fishing operation there for a couple of weeks (aside from some stone crabs that got swept up onto the rocks). Keep in mind
though that a big swell will also be walling out the beach break at La Bocana. Launch a waverunner there in those conditions? Maybe. Tin boat?
Not so much, unless it has wings.
FYI, the last time I was at the port (New Years), it appeared that they were building a new ramp, in the cove well in the lee of the point before you
get to the end. Don't know for sure if that's what it is (could be just a walkway), or whether it's available for public use. If Sam's not around to
guide you, look for Alfredo at the aqua colored house on at the top of the new ramp. He's a good guy.
Yeah, what is it....

....about that credit, "Kam Fong as Chin Ho" that makes it so memorable? Until DanO mentioned it, I forgot DanO's real name...........but I remembered
Kam Fong as Chin Ho.
I think maybe it was a culture shock thing when we were little. Those names seemed so UNLIKE the names of our playmates.
