Our plans are to leave Baja in May or early June and take our pickup over to the mainland for some exploration before returning to the US. What do we
need to know, take, remember? What documents for the truck do we need? What's this about a deposit for the vehicle? What does it cost?
Thanks for all your knowledge.bajalou - 2-4-2006 at 07:21 PM
You have to do a "Temporary Importation" which good for the time you are legal in Mexico. (experation of your FMT) You have to have the
registration, a credit card, (Visa or MC only) and a FMT (or FM3 etc) all in the same name. Costs about $30 US. Not a real big deal but takes a
little time.vandenberg - 2-4-2006 at 07:44 PM
You have to get an import permit at either the ferry terminal in La Paz or the one in Santa Rosalia. Need proof of ownership and valid American driver
licences for all drivers. They wouldn't accept my Mexican licence. They will issue a window sticker which you have to turn back in on your
return.(Important) Hope this helps.bajalou - 2-4-2006 at 08:01 PM
Am I wrong in believing that if you got your Temp Import Permit in Mexicali or Tijuana that it would be valid and speed things up at the ferry
terminal?turtleandtoad - 2-4-2006 at 08:59 PM
It doesn't matter where you get it, it's valid anywhere in Mexico up to the date your FMT expires. Just remember to have it removed on the Mexico side
by Migra before leaving Mexico. Do NOT do it yourself.
If you don't, you will have a problem getting another one the next time you want to go into mainland Mexico.
And, yes it will speed up things considerably if you already have the sticker and all the other paperwork ready. You won't be running back and forth
between the Migra, the copy center, and the bank.JZ - 2-5-2006 at 05:23 AM
If you cross at Santa Rosalia to Guaymas and then don't venture south of Guaymas you don't need an import permit. There is free movement of vehicles
to just south of Guaymas (km 98). If you want to go south of Guaymas, but remain in the state of Sonora, you can get a free Sonora Only permit in
Emplame at km98. Emplame is the little town just south of Guaymas.
If you go South of Sonora (i.e. cross at LA PAZ), you will need an all MX import permit. You get that a Banjecito offices located at any border
crossing or at the ferry terminal.
San Carlos in Sonora is a must see.JZ - 2-5-2006 at 05:23 AM
