Goin' South

Juan del Rio - 2-5-2006 at 11:22 AM

Does anyone out here in Baja Nomad Land have old photos of "Going South" to Baja from the 60's and earlier? Many of you will recognize this location. Photo from 1961/San Diego Historical Society.

Sunday afternoon crossing

Juan del Rio - 2-5-2006 at 11:25 AM

Yep, it was just as bad back in 1925 trying to make it past the San Ysidro border crossing at 2:00 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon! Photo from the San Diego Historical Society.

A Baja Classic...

Juan del Rio - 2-6-2006 at 09:39 PM

I think this photo of Mr. Eduardo Castro is great. Notice the nice clothes he wears, the condition of the his car and how clean the taxi is (including the hubcaps!) for driving all over those dirt roads. The other thing to notice is his watch. This guy was a real businessman! Love the colors on the car as well...in an odd way, they work. Photo taken October 12, 1964 at Punta de Lobos. Howard Gulick collection.

Great to see the photos here on Nomad! I have the link to them in my Baja Notebook site...

Here was the book Howard Gulick was working on when he took many of those photos... All Baja buffs should get a copy!

The third and fourth edition had this cover...

Why Leave? Just come back...

Juan del Rio - 2-7-2006 at 10:50 PM

This is from the San Diego's Historical Society's photo collection.

I gather that this sign was in Baja for travelers heading back North to San Diego in 1926. What is so current for me, is, I always (yes, always), want to come back and head South to Baja. No matter what the day,the job I'm on, time of day or what my family says...oh, how I scheme in my daily life to go South to Baja for another, "Baja Adventure" with my amigos and the wonderful people of Baja!

No matter what is said on this Board, it seems like everyone connected here has the same channel turned on...and I think it's that very special channel we have each found- somewhere in a great place...that we all call, "Baja".

I'm going to the Mexico Travel Expo in San Diego on Sunday to support Ted....then goin' further South for a little adventure...

Like the sign says: "Why Leave? You'll come back".

...'cause I always will.

OUCH!!! 26 years later...

Let's try this. For some reason, it would not let me edit my photo mistake...Technology in the hands of amateurs!

Thanks for posting these photos. Brought back a lot of memories to this old timer. Thanks again.

Ok, I'll just think no...

Juan del Rio - 2-9-2006 at 10:11 PM

...come on....everyone on this Board has had a photo like this. Let's see those old family photos, Army, Marine, Air Force, Spring Break ...you know the drill! Even you "want-a-be", Baja Nomads, sign up and jump in! The water is always warm on the board, but that's only part of the fun. I have learned so much from this forum... and I'm an "Old Guys Rule" longboarder whose not that good.

If you like Baja (or even if you are thinkin' about your first adventure South), let us know! If you're here on this site, you're at home! Sign up and lets go South! All welcomed. There are a lot of folks here that want to help with your adventure...lets go south! We all love Baja. Just sign up now and lets hear you story...(we really want why you like this crazy place). Just tell us how you met the donkey/burro. Don't be shy.
Editing is only, "Part Of The Show"
Come on, improve your skills. Some of us might bite, but get any of us together around a "Baja Campfire" and we'll just ask you for another beer or shot of tequila!

OK, who knows where this is...

Juan del Rio - 2-9-2006 at 10:29 PM

before the road was built. Gosh, must be before 1965. Any takers??? San Diego Historical Society Photo.
Hint...think "Virgins".

David K - 2-10-2006 at 08:14 AM

Been on that road, in 1966... of course I wasn't driving at 8 1/2!

San Ignacio to Santa Rosalia... You should have seen the grades going down! One switchback was so tight, my dad had to back up to get around it in the Wagoneer.

Here's a couple images from my 1979 trip to Gonzaga on the old road south of Puertecitos...
