Road to Laguna San Ignacio

BajaVida - 2-9-2006 at 09:15 AM

Anyone been out there lately?

Someone on Fred's board said the road was so bad that he turned back after 4 miles.

The tour companies take vans out to the Laguna, so I can't imagine it is that bad.

Could we make it out (and back) in a 2WD Ford pickup, a Jeep Cherokee and either a RAV 4 or Previa van? We would air down and drive slowly.

And is there anywhere we can air up as we get back on the pavement headed north?

The Pemex station in San Ignacio most likely has air... Otherwise one of any tire repair shops in San Ignacio/ San Lino (near Ricardo's Rice & Beans)?

Regarding the post on the road...

Remember 'Bad Roads = Good People' (Mama Espinoza around 1973)

We were on it not long ago--just another annoyingly washboardy road.

If you are going out for the day, I would definitely consider using one of the tour groups. Kuyima is a good one. That would also mean that you could all be in one vehicle and that no one would be going nuts driving. It is a tortuous road and rough on your vehicle. However, the reward of seeing the whales in such a friendly atmosphere, makes it worth whatever you have to put up with.

I talked with Ricardo at Rice and Beans in San Ignacio a few days ago and he complained that the road was very bad. He said he had recently broke an axle on one of his vans and punchered a new tire a few weeks ago.
If you do decide to drive the road, figure on no more the 10 mph which puts the ride at a little more than three hours.
Good Luck

we are driving down next week and camping at Kuyima's. We are driving a Toyota Tacoma 4x4 I have two spares and will air down my tires. I dont know how to drive 10 miles per hour. Maybe there will be rain and some mud too. that will make it even more fun, YA!!!!:tumble::lol::bounce:

We were on it 5 days ago and if you air down it is better than most roads we were on in the last three months. You can make it easly in 1:45. The whales are in and love to come to the boats
