GN Checkpoint

Are officials taking away fuits and vegetables at the border between Baja Norte and Baja Sur? Also heard a rumor that they were confiscating beef.
I have had them take away our apples on a previous trip.
Are they still spraying vehicles with Malathion?
Thanks

They still check for fruits and veggies. They can be pretty aggressive in that they will insist to see your cooler even after you say you don't have any.

Beef? I have heard the rumor but last time through with beef they were gone for the night when we got there. Our beef was from Ensenada...shouldn't have been a problem then but you never know.

The spray. They still do it. Costs 10 pesos. So it must be something other than just water, as some suggest.

I have had them ask for beef and chicken in the past. The last couple of times through they just asked for fruit. The beef thing was when the mad cow scare was going on. I think they had some nice BBQ's woth the meat.

My beef with the beef scare

So, how is confiscating POTENTIALLY tainted beef gonna protect the cattle in southern Baja?

It's not like I was gonna turn my steaks into feeder byproduct and give them to the range cattle.

It's not like if I contracted it down there from my US beef that I would then infect people or cattle.

Where was the logic behind confiscating it?

Went "Over The Line" last October about two in the afternoon. They asked for tourist cards and then asked if we had any fruits and vegetables, didn't ask about meats. Turned us over to the bug men and for 20 pesos, actually 10 pesos and one dollar, we got our truck sprayed. Funny thing was the large, empty stakebed truck in front of us, he just drove slowly as the spray gunner stood alongside the road and sprayed the right side of the truck.

I read somewhere that there is an unofficial checkpoint bypass

BajaVida - 2-13-2006 at 08:45 AM

by taking the road to the airport, just north of the checkpoint

I would never dream of doing that, but could someone provide details in case someone needs to know?

Won't miss a Army checkpoint, but no migra, Turn off to the airport, drive around it and hed down the big wide road west. Gets to town just west of the Bank.

Just so you can watch and see if someone is doint this.

:o

I did it in Jan and went to the Lagoon. It works!

They spray malathion for the fruit fly. Leave your window rolled down and you can tell. :smug:

We always leave two limes and one orange as a sacrafice right on top of the ice chest so the guy has something to eat and something for their Tecate later.
