San Juanico Fish

Juan del Rio - 2-19-2006 at 10:17 AM

This fish was floundering in the bay yesterday then washed up with the tide. Photo was taken about thirty minutes after it died. The tail had been bitten off. Any idea what it is? No one here knows...

It looks like the head portion of an oar fish.

Too bad it wasnt surf season there you could sell alot of fish tacos to the guests, theres a couple of guys there that come to mind who could capitalize on this!

was the tail cut off or bitten off?

Oarfish "King of Herrings":

"People most often see Oarfish washed up on beaches. Encounters with live Oarfish are rare. They are sometimes seen on the surface, and this may contribute to tales of sea serpents.

If I'm not mistaken, there was something written about a sighting/finding of one of these fish back on the Amigos site long ago as well.

Great response. I told people here in town that my buddies on Baja Nonads would be able to figure it out. I'll post the responses at Snakes Cantina later today.
