Renewals And First-Timers Must Now Have Appointment
March 6, 2006
SAN DIEGO -- Membership renewal and first-time application for a program that helps travelers cross the U.S.-Mexico border more quickly will take
place by appointment only.
The administrative change in the program called Secure Electronic Network for Travelers' Rapid Inspection went into effect Monday.
The clearances of about 25,000 participants in the service are due to expire soon, and they must visit SENTRI headquarters in Otay Mesa to renew,
according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection public affairs officials.
Currently, some 70,000 people in the San Diego and Tijuana areas take part in the program, which speeds up border-crossing procedures for registered
travelers.
Those interested in applying for or renewing membership in SENTRI may schedule appointments, which take about 90 minutes to complete, by calling (619)
690-7601/7602/7603. Weekday and weekend times will be available.
