What's the most economical way to get from the Cabo airport to La Paz? How many miles is it?

Take the bus.

98 miles via the western route.
125 miles via the eastern route.

Take an airport shuttle (NOT a taxi) to the main bus station in San Jose (I think it's Aguilla bus lines, but ask the shuttle dude - he knows which bus goes to La Paz).

Buy a ticket to La Paz for something like $280 pesos, be sure to get your sweater out of your bags (the bus is the most air conditioned place in all of Baja Sur), get comfy and enjoy some real nice scenery (or whatever movie they're showing). Go all the way to the bus station in La Paz and take a taxi from there to your hotel.

Yes, it's Aguila. I suggest you take the corta (short) route that goes through Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos.

Actually the route through San Lucas and Todos Santos is the long way. The direct to La Paz route is the shortest(distance wise) and very beautiful. I would take that one at least one way. Might as well do the loop!

And next to Aguila is another bus company if the wait is too long for the big blue bird(Aguila!) you might check there.

I think there is some confusion between 'Cabo' (C. San Lucas) and 'Los Cabos Airport' (which is north of San Jose del Cabo).

The Los Cabos Airport is closer to La Paz via Hwy. 1 (110 mi.) and Cabo San Lucas is closer to La Paz via Hwy. 19 (through Todos Santos, 104 mi.).

The airport to Cabo is about 25 mi., to San Jose del Cabo, about 7 miles... both south, the opposite direction from La Paz.

Well, DK after reading your explanation, I am truly confused.

The question arises when this person gets to the bus station in San Jose del Caba as there are two routes that the bus takes...one through Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos and on to La Paz and one that leaves headed straight to La Paz(you will pass the airport!).
I say go one way going and the other way coming back. Timewise the San Lucas route is usually quicker but no guarantees on that. It is one big loop and you get to see different scenery throughout the trip.

I was using the airport as the point of reference...

If you are starting from the town of San Jose del Cabo (7 miles south of the Los Cabos airport) then the distance to La Paz is about 117 mi. via the eastern route (through Los Barriles) OR about 122 mi. via the western route (through Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos).

Hi,
I suggested the route that goes through Cabo San Lucas & Todos Santos on the way to La Paz because we've never had any bus problems on that route. Whereas, the 2 times we've taken the route that goes through Los Barriles---once the bus broke down and had to wait 2 hours on the side of the road for the next one to go by and the other time they forgot to load our luggage. It was the same bus company (Aguila). But yes, the scenery is very beautiful on the way to La Paz through Los Barriles.

The bus leaves from station in San Jose del Cabo and does not stop at the airport (although Judy is correct, it goes past the airport).

One must get transportation from the airport to the bus station, and the cheapest way to do that is to take a shuttle. I think they're all about the same cost, but I always try to get a verbal agreement with driver about the price before I give 'em my luggage.

Judy, I agree with you that the short route San Jose to La Paz is the more scenic of the two drives... some truly stunning views, there are! I do hope to be riding that bus SOON. :spingrin:

Edit to include above post: That's interesting. I've never had a problem taking that bus San Jose to La Paz, although I do find it regulary runs anywhere from on-time up to one-half hour late.

Hi,

Since it looks like we'll be driving from Cabo airport to La Paz in light of the AeroCal problem, can someone post explicit directions from Cabo airport to La Paz? We'll be renting a car. The short route please, and how long should it take us?

When you leave the airport, take a left(north) up #1. It is approximately 90 miles and a good two to two and a half hours. What time do you land? The late aftenoon sun can be problematic either route. Just take your time and enjoy the scenery. The road is windy and mountainous but the vistas are spectacular.
