Dish Network TV

El Jefe - 4-9-2006 at 09:25 AM

Our guy set us up with Dish Network on the east cape and it works just fine. We have a billing address at my son's house in San Diego and a he established a service location in Texas. Since we've never been to Texas, I guess that is what they do to make it "legit". We pay about $45 per month for the regular service package.

Thanks El Jefe-- I wonder - do you have a 2 meter dish and can you get additional packages like HBO, cinemax and game day football in the Fall and finally can you get the HD package?
I have dish network and had planned to do as you have stated by keeping my US mailing address, taking my own boxes and having the sytem set up in El Centenario, and the bill is paid electronically so no need to pay or worrry about paper billings.

that dose not make it "legit". it is illegal . it is against the law in both Mexico and the US to have that system set up where you have it. allot of people have the Dish Network and other US and Canadian sat. services Here in Baja sur, and they work just fine. I would put the dish where it cant be seen by others and not Brag to much about it to others especially on the internet.

Really? I knew about the U.S., but Mexico? I know that Mexico has U.S. 'Direct' protection as they have licensed service. Last I heard, 'Dish' doesn't.

capitolkat - 4-11-2006 at 09:03 AM

Bruce-- while I know my spanish will improve with every day usage when I come to Baja sur- does the SKY package you mention have and English language format and could I for instance get local programming from the US like a dish network package would provide?

jcurland - 4-11-2006 at 10:20 AM

A few thoughts on satellite in Baja as I have made all the mistakes someone can. I am in Loreto, which is the hardest place to get signal. I have had Direct, Dish and now switching to Star Choice in Canada. I have had sat dishes of 1 meter to 3 meters. If you are in La Paz or south or the extreme north, they all work for the most part. In Loreto we received about 12 channels on Direct, approx. 70 channels on Dish, however dish goes completely off line between 3:00 am and 6:30 am. Star Choice I have seen online in town gets all channels that you order. I will be returning home to Loreto on April 17th to hook up the Star Choice. I will let everyone know what happens.

can't see it on IE6.... maybe all that 'illegal' talk caused him to pull it... can't be too careful. The dish police are everywhere.

Greetings Bajajudy,
I am still here but I did remove the post. Curiously, only one reply and one u2u until I edited the post by removing it.

Think I'll just stick to broadcast channels in La Paz. It will improve my spanish language skills and no worries about pirated signals, etc. The Dish dish might call attention to my herb farm *Joke*
Who caught the news of the Venezuelan plane with the hundred suitcases of Cocaine intercepted in Mexico!?

capitolkat - 4-12-2006 at 05:43 AM

Bruce-- good to know-- thanks as I will want to emulate your support of all things local. I guess you mean you can get CNN, Fox news, ESPN and the college football game day plans as well as HBO, Cinemax etc.

capitolkat - 4-12-2006 at 08:12 AM

Bruce-- great -- sounds reasonable and what I need and probably better reception than from the States.

Villadelfin-- Lomas del Centenario??? isn't that a floorplan??

bill erhardt - 4-12-2006 at 09:25 AM

Kat........Before you invest your money in Sky I would suggest that you go someplace where Sky service is connected and see for yourself the programming that is actually available.

jerry - 4-12-2006 at 10:14 AM

Excellent Advice!!! Not all is as it appears!

Don Alley - 4-12-2006 at 01:43 PM

We have Sky in Loreto with HBO/Max package, about 600 MN a month.

Many Spanish Language channels

Lots of movie channels, most in English with Spanish subtitles. However, HBO is HBO Latin america: http://www.hbo-la.tv

It's a bit different...you won't get stuff like The Sopranos until much later. It's not as good, imo.

Network TV shows...no NBC, CBS, ABC, but, many shows are carried on stations like Fox, Sony, AXN, American Network...stuff like Desparate Housewives, Gray's Anatomy, American Idol, but i don't keep up on all that stuff. We get Letterman, but not Leno, but I don't know if it's current. Saturday Night Live is reruns. The Simpsons is available in English and also Spanish, diffrent times and channels.

Kid stuff...most children's programming is in Spanish. At on time they have Ren and Stimpy, Duckman, and South Park all in a row and in Spanish. Talk about corrupting youth! :) Wish we could get South Park in English!

News...includes Fox News, CNN International. No "regular" CNN. CBS Evening News on the American Network channel.

Sports...mostly Mexican channels, 2 ESPN channels, and Fox sports. The Fox channel usually has commentary in Spanish, the ESPN channels in English. For an extra charge, lots of pro football available. The Fox and ESPN sport channels are Spanish Language versions, so there are many soccer futbol games, and Sportcenter is a Spanish version. Not too much US Baseball or college sports, but the really big games are on. Seems to be lots of NBA though.

Lots of music channels, MTV, VH1 (but I believe both are la versions, but I don't know for sure) Bandamex, etc.

Reliability has been good. Billing is automatic from a credit card, which was required along with a contract of a year or maybe more, I don't remember.

Recommendation...if you mostly like movies, it's OK. Same for lots of network TV shows; Sky may not have them all but they have a lot, including most I have heard of. If you think Fox News is "Fair and Balanced?" you may be happy, but if you prefer CNN you have to settle for a lot of really boring "World Sport" and "Africa Today" programming on CNN international.

But, hey, you're in Mexico...there are some really cool old Mexican movies on the two Pelicula channels. Did you know Mexico has a strong movie history, that not only displays but helped shape their national culture? Check it out.;D

What's legal and what's not....

I'm new here. Help me out.

Is the above illegal because el jefe has a San Diego address which really isn't his residence? Or is it the DishNet or DirecTV receiver from up North that is illegal down South?

I was planning on bringing one of my receivers from home (Colorado) to Todos Santos and hooking it to a 1m dish.

Is that illegal?

For the record, I support local and Mex!

Regards,

Lee

Legal?

Don Alley - 10-2-2006 at 07:25 PM

Certain binding international treaties or agreements cover satellite broadcasting. Current agreements keep US dish marketers on their side of the border, and Mexico's Sky on its side. So it is a violation of that agreement for a US provider to knowingly supply the equpment, including the decoding card, for a system to be used in Mexico.

If you acquire equipment and the decoding cards only after providing fraudulent information to the satellite provider it seems to me you could be busted if the authorities wanted to bother.

There are a number of Sky providers in every town, maybe all it takes is one to maybe ask the law to assist in "converting" an "illegal" US /Canadian dish to a Sky dish.
