RVing in Baja

tgpepper - 4-10-2006 at 10:58 AM

I'm planning a 9 day trip to Baja, San Quintin is the farthest I been. My ideal trip is to make it to Cabo, but I feel 9 days may not be enough so I may head either to Loreto or maybe La Paz then make my way back North and visit other points of interest along the way. My trip will be on the first week of July, hauling a 19ft TT, w/ 2ATV's....my questions to the forum:

Suggestions on campgrounds south of San Quintin, up to La Paz. What type of driving roads should I expect ? I will leave San Bernardino on a Thrusday, arrive in Ensenada at night, continue next AM as far south as I could. How difficult is it to drive that RV down south ? If I leave the RV , will 9days be enough to make a round trip to cabo and back ?

Check out Diver's and other Nomad's camping adventures. They have posted earlier here...they are all vet's of the camping areas, conditions, etc. You should have no problems pulling your rig..just be cautious when meeting and passing other RVers and trucks.

In my opinion 9 days is not nearly enough time with a RV...I think you would spend most all of your time driving. 5 days minimum round-trip from border to Cabo driving with the RV...and that is quick timing it, no fun. Happy trails.

Too much driving......

....to get to Cabo and back in nine days, WITH OR WITHOUT THE RV. You dont really want to spend your whole trip behind the wheel, do you?

Well, I guess ATVs dont actually have wheels, but.........

Almost anywhere south of San Quintin except close to the Pacific, it will be very hot. Do you require electrical to run your A/C unit or are you certain that you will be comfortable in a dry camp? Or will you simply get on the ATVs once your in camp and stay cool that way.

Seriously, the heat is a factor in July. Let us know what kind of camp you prefer and that will help us with some suggestions.

I will tell you that I would stay AWAY from Bahia Concepcion. TOO DAMN HOT.

I suppose you actually want some time to use the ATV's someplace instead of just driving the whole time ?? I owuldn't try to get to Cabo with the RV in that time. Getting to Cabo in 9 days rount trip will require and average of 3, 8-10 hour days each way. Not much of a trip without the RV either.
Why go to Cabo anyway ? Mexico's West Palm Beach.

I might consider a day or two in Catavina with the ATV's then on to Bahia de Los Angeles and/or Gonzaga Bay then back. This will get you south of your previous adventures but keep you north of the hottest temps that time of year. You will be close to the Baja 500/1000 track location if you want to ATV the real thing.

I'm not stuck in cabo, just a thought. Although the rv is equip w/ an AC, I will require power so hook-ups will be ideal otherwise dry camp will do. How hot are we talking about ? Maybe I should take some power of my own. I want to drive south, camp for a few days, head north and camp at another camp....etc, atv riding ( teenage boys, fishing, and drinking beer on the beach for me). How are the roads down to Gonzaga bay ?

Diver has a decent plan.....

....although I'm not sure I would want to do the road to Gonzaga (via Chapala) in an RV. You would certainly make it but it can be hell on trailers and it could take you four hours or more to get in there. Slow putt.

The ATVing around Catavina would be hard to beat, IMO. You could stay at Rancho Santa Ines for real cheap and park near one of their big trees. Daytime highs will probably be upper 80s/low 90s and pretty dry unless something monsoonal is nearby. Usually a nice breeze there, too; I doubt you'd need AC.

Bahia de LA COULD be considerably hotter and considerably more humid. Here, a generator that could run your AC could be an aid to cool down the RV just before bed. I'd probably stay at Dagget's or Campo Archelon or, if the road out there is not too bad, Campo Gecko. Can be tough on trailers, though. But it's only about five miles. Best ATVing is probably south of town towards Las Animas. Good washes and, if you have the range, Las Animas itself would be a fun trip. A huge wash drains into the bay.

I'm not nearly as familiar with the Gonzaga area but, based on the reports on this board and others, it has great ATVing. It's just the road in that you have to consider. It could take the equivalent of one day just to get in there and back to the highway.

One last thing.....NEVER LEAVE YOUR CAMP, ESPECIALLY AT BOLA OR GONZAGA, WITH YOUR AWNING EXTENDED! Winds can come up fast.
