Baja Norte Travel Warning!

MexicoTed - 4-14-2006 at 05:32 PM

Has everyone seen this "interview" from Mike Overcast?

http://www.kfmb.com/stories/story.46612.html

He was interviewed on the news and the stories concentrate on warning Americans from going to Baja Norte.

Unbelievable,
Ted

Mike Supino - 4-14-2006 at 05:40 PM

Maybe do a search on "Mike Overcast"

What do you mean by unbelievable? It can be taken in different ways.:?::?::?::?:

MexicoTed - 4-14-2006 at 06:05 PM

What I meant was two-fold.

1) That Mike Overcast is releasing this to news agencies as if he speaks for a "government organization".

2) That CBS San Diego and now the other stations are reporting this as the local government recommends that Americans not cross the border. Seems a bit irresponsible.

I actually just received an email (sent to Baja Talk Radio) from someone in San Francisco saying they heard the government is warning against travel in Baja Norte and they wanted to know if they should still go to San Felipe on vacation. I emailed them back to see how they heard about this and to let them know I was just there.

I'm not blind as I know there is crime with the drug lords, etc. especially in TJ, but to recommend people don't go to Baja Norte only. Seems strange.

The baja ****** Mexico Club's president is telling its members that they should avoid Baja California Norte.

dose any one believe this......The baja ****** Mexico Club has about 10,000 members worldwide.

DanO - 4-14-2006 at 06:23 PM

Check the following "travel advisory" on MO's baja ****** website that advises travelers to change their BC travel plans to BCS, which, surprisingly enough, can be arranged by baja ******:

"Starting on March 12, the Club advises Members to avoid travel to Baja Norte, through Spring 2006. The recent rash of kidnappings of American citizens in Baja Norte compells the Club to issue the Travel Advisory.

All travel to Southern Baja continues to be promoted by the Club. The Club is now advising all Members who have travel plans to Baja Norte to reschedule them to Southern Baja.

Southern Baja Mexico continues to be the safest tourism location in the world for American citizens. Contact the Club directly for Travel Services to accomplish the safest Travel possible. Phone: 619-470-1890. eMail: **********@cox.net"

Some might see a mere coincidence here. Others might see a blatant marketing ploy aimed at creating and capitalizing on totally irrational fear. Not that I'm picking a side. Just making an observation.

David K - 4-14-2006 at 06:29 PM

At 1:30pm Thursday, I was listening to KFMB's news break and heard the announced news warning from 'baja ****** Travel Club' that due to recent kidnappings, tourists should avoid Baja California (Norte).

I find it interesting that the area where baja ****** has been promoting tourism and off road racing (Cabo 500) is in Baja California Sur...

I am also wondering how a news division did not check the source or varify the report at anything other than a free plug for the 'baja ******' club.

I guess that means we won't see Mr. Overcast at this year's big '2006 Tianguis Tijuana' event, like we did last year... being held in Baja Norte!

Bruce R Leech - 4-14-2006 at 06:36 PM

Boy Mike, you really shoved your whole leg down your throat this time.:P

I mean Mike Overcast

Roberto - 4-14-2006 at 06:46 PM

Only question I have is this - How come Overcast can get this level of publicity, while "some" of the folks on this board remain unknowns?

Kinda gives you a different perspective on the guy's marketing skills, right? DK should take some lessons from him!:lol::lol::lol:

a lot of people listened to Hitler also.

seems like it is easier to get an audience when you are crying the sky is falling in than when you are spreading good news about a place like David K dose.

BajaNomad - 4-14-2006 at 06:58 PM

KFMB has been suckered and is looking very foolish here.

Major: Allowing someone deriving income from tourism in BCS to say don't go to BC (scare tactics), but BCS is safe, come on down! This is a commercial for baja ****** - and 10,000 members ??? - if this was true, many of those are freebies then.

Is this an attack by Mike on the business of say, the Discover Baja Travel Club?

BTW.. note that the kidnappings are not tourist-targeted, but specific businesspeople known in the community.

Minor: How is it responsible for a news organization like KFMB to report the state of Baja California as "Baja California Norte"? Is KFMB located in the State of Upper California?

How sad of a reflection is this on the news reporting of KFMB? Very irresponsible for sure.

Dave - 4-14-2006 at 06:59 PM

Mike, you finally done good. I just wish more folks would listen. ;D

<Present company (mostly) excluded.>

DanO - 4-14-2006 at 07:01 PM

Bruce makes a valid point -- fear is an excellent motivational tool. In fact, the fear of contracting intestinal diseases and the fear of being trapped in a confined space with hundreds of people I don't have anything in common with are two reasons I will never, ever, go on a cruise.

Ok, if you want to get serious here.

Associating basically ANY station (to include the cable stations like MSNBC, FOX, CNN, or the mainstream CBS, NBC, ABC) with serious news is ludicrous. Take as an example any day you choose - and draw your own conclusions. But, to limit it to Baja, let's pick the recent report of the woman found murdered near Puertecitos. Was that any more responsible or thorough than this particular incident? I think not.

Bernie, as I write this, there are hundreds of drunk Easter pilgrims lighting fireworks and drag racing on the beach in front of your old casita. Maybe you should rethink that. ;D

Mr. Overcast made the channel 10 news this evening - and their website to boot:

Un-freakin' believable. What a loon.

Hmmm...wonder what effect this will have on Baja Sur traffic? Will they find another route or go through the frontier in caravans?

Hire armed gaurds?

I wonder what effect the passport requirement will have on Baja traffic as a whole? Now, that will be interesting!

Ken

Baja Bernie - 4-15-2006 at 09:12 AM

You sure raised an interesting question. With passport requirements I doubt that many will be just popping down to TJ or Ensenada for lunch. Doubt that it will affect south of Ensenada much. It will probably really hurt Rosarito with its dependence on the real young crowd. Doubt that they will think far enough ahead to get passports AND those other things that they mostly will remember.

Dave..........No, the idiots have been doing that for the past 15years--except with a little mordida we were able to keep the vehicles off the beach. The newer folks just do not understand how to get things done. Wish we could go further south but just getting a little too old to start building (three houses in Baja is enough) again.

Baja was great to me and I try to be good to it--but sittting and writing will mostly be it for me in the future.

If it wasn't Semana Santa......

Hook - 4-15-2006 at 10:04 PM

......I doubt that the SD "news" organizations would have even considered covering this. But with spring breakers running amok and parents wondering what their kids are up to, they saw a sensational angle.

I'm with Roberto on this.......the primary goal of news organizations these days is increasing ratings, not report news. Have you noticed how they can twist a plug for a prime time show on their networks into a "news" item? Happens all the time.

Except, I am not trying to get anything out of what I do on Nomad... I have no tourist business.

I post my trip reports or respond to others here because I enjoy doing it, and not for any financial gain. Except for you and a couple others, it is appreciated. You see, I like people and I like Baja... Baja Nomad is the best place for this way of thinking.

I wasn't aware of any of this, while mine and two other families had a great time traveling over 1000 miles of Baja Norte over Spring Break. Didn't notice a thing.
Don't believe the hype!

I wonder if Overcast will report...

neilm - 4-16-2006 at 03:15 PM

how many gringos were kidnapped in Baja over the holiday? I suspect, zero.

Neil

Neal Johns - 4-16-2006 at 03:42 PM

Mr. Overcast has made my day. 10,000 members?

Let me see now, $25 x 10,000 = $250,000

Maybe Mike will loan me some money.:lol::lol:

Also, all this talk frightens me, so all Nomads please send your wives to Lytle Creek to hold my hand.:o

DanO - 4-16-2006 at 03:43 PM

The more I think about this, the more peeed off I get. I have good friends who depend on the tourist trade in BC to make a living, and this guy has appointed himself as the frickin' private U.S. State Department and issued a travel advisory that takes food out of the mouths of my friends and other hardworking folks in the north.

But just to be sure, I checked the real State Department's site, and you know what? There is no travel advisory for BC or for any other part of Baja or Mexico. In fact, there is only one country in the whole of the Americas (North, Central and South) on the list -- Columbia. Other than Haiti, the travel advisories are limited to Central and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. See for yourself right here:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html

I also ran across the State Department's quite informative tips for spring break travelers to Mexico, which is devoid of a single warning about kidnappings or other violent crime directed at American tourists in BC. In fact, the only thing they have to say about BC is that it's illegal to drink on the street in TJ and you need a prescription to buy meds. On the other hand, Cabo (that's in BCS, isn't it?) is noted for rental agencies who intimidate customers into overpaying:

bancoduo - 4-16-2006 at 03:57 PM

chit happens down here just like in the US, don't deny it. There are to many developers that have infiltrated this site. CAN I SELL YOU A VIEW HOUSE IN BEAUTIFUL LAGUNA SALADA. I have no pictures; But belive me I would not lie to you.

We love you come on down! But send me your check first. ESTUPIDO!

MexicoTed - 4-16-2006 at 06:11 PM

Mike Overcast is doing this for a personal gain, his tourism reservations and the race he is promoting (Cabo 500) in BCS. The news stations were duped.

I want to know the reception Mike will get from tourism officials and businesses in Northern Baja now that he is telling people not to go there..... I also heard one station talk about his 1999 tourism award from Baja California. I know why he hasn't won one since.

No, it's just that I've sat through one too many sensationalized stories on the Fox News channel. (yawn)
