4WD community backlash against my Operation Gratitude event

Ken Cooke - 5-5-2006 at 08:15 PM

Here is an email for all of you to examine. For the record, I have nothing but good things to say about Mexico. Sure, things are corrupt, people are poor, and the infrastructure needs desperate help, but I'll always love Baja. Always did, always will.

Response to Bob on RubiconOwners listserve regarding why
I did not boycott my own 4WD trip to Rosarito tomorrow...

Bob,

The beauty of our democracy is the fact that we can share our opinions with each other without some dictator watching our every move. I planned this run prior to the massive boycotts/demonstrations/protests etc. and perhaps my best quality as a human being is the fact that I do not change or delete runs that I plan to lead. That being said, I'm hoping (for my own selfish reasons) that Lobster Village is a completely empty collection of restaurants, devoid of Americans spending their hard-earned USA bucks. Our Jeeps will be able to park at will in front of Ortega's, order up a round of Model cervezas, and watch the waves crash into darkness...

Sorry Ken, I can't make it due to the " Boycott Mexico's Business and Economy Month".

We need to demonstrate our dissatisfaction with the way they treated Americans by blocking our streets and boycotting our businesses while enjoying our way of life, in our country.

There was a day, not too long ago, when I would jump at the chance to run in Mexico, as I have for over fifty years. Now that there's a revolution by their people in our country, I have to give my support to the country I was born in and reside in, and refrain from traveling there.

Regrets , Bob

Subject: [RubiconOwners] Feliz Cinco de Mayo, let's go to Baja!!

Tomorrow, several of us are traveling to San Ysidro, CA where we will celebrate John Vera's going away party with a trail run from La Presa to El Descanso, run the sand dunes in Cantamar, obtain handsigned Baja paperback books at the Pyramid Resort, and finally dinner in Lobster Village. With a healthy itinerary, who could go wrong? We're even meeting up in front of an Insurance office that sells Mexican insurance policies.

After we finish playing on the dunes, we will have the opportunity of filling our gas tanks with $2.26/gallon Pemex gas!! WooHoo!! That's cause to celebrate!!

I wonder if Bob boycotts everyone who has a different opinion than he ??

Although I too was a bit enflamed by the recent protests, I would like to think that we would display our national attitude in a more generous and intelligent manner than tit for tat.

Seems the boycott will affect the local working people most of all.

I may also dissagree with George's actions in the middle east, but I respect and support every single soldier.

Good on you, Ken !! Have a great weekend !!

Seems like giving up something you enjoy is cutting off your nose to spite your face or however the saying goes. The May 1 "event" in the US had little to no impact on the economy in general. Seems it hurt the people it was intended to "help". Which businesses closed? The Latiino owned businesses. Who patronized those businesses? Primarily other Latinos. So who was hurt? The Latino community.

We, for two, are headed to Baja in 10 days for several months where we'll be enjoying their sun, sand and cerveza!

Cranky, ain't he? Whatever. I'm guessing that the absence of the six or seven people who are participating in Boycott Mexico's Business and Economy Month wasn't enough to score Ken that prime parking spot in front of Ortega's. Heh.

I bought an Hewlett Packard computer and ate a Quarter pounder at Mcdonalds the very day of the boycott.

Ken: thanks for a good Report:
Here in the Great Texas Panhandle the demonstrations were Peaceful and with dignity. Many of the Beef Packing Operations gave the employees the Dayoff as well as other Firms
With the exception of One Jayhoo there were no Arrest, he did not follow his Leaders well founded Advice and made a Spectable of Himself.

I have a friend who was one of the Leaders> We had a good discussion concerning the problems and agreed that it will take Positive Honest and trustworthy men and women on both sides of the issue to be able to solve it!
We also agreed that our Countries have those men and women-that it will be solved-

Many of the 2nd Generation Mexicano youngsters do not speak Spanish, nor do many of the American children- I tell both of them that they should learn Both Languages, that it will mean later in Life_-"Mas dinero in the Bolsa".
We , of Both countries will solve this Problem! I have confidence in the People!

Think Positive-have Respect for your Fellow Man, treat them as you would like to be treated!

In God I Trust"

Business was way down in Puerto Nuevo yesterday. In a normally capacity crowd at Ortegas was reduced to perhaps 1/3rd of a normal Saturday evening. Regardless, John almost had a tear in his eye as he told us how much fun he had in the short time he spent in Baja. His expenses were covered thanks to everyones generosity and he plans to return to Baja in 3 yrs. when his military service sends him/family back to San Diego.

We looked for you Ken (at the Pyramid Resort)... que paso? Bernie had a nice gift pack of books for John.

Ken Cooke - 5-7-2006 at 01:34 PM

I will be sending a note of apology to Keri and Bernie. Our group arrived at the Pyramid Resort at approximately 6:20 p.m. yesterday. As we drove our Jeeps up towards the Pyramid Resort Office, Greg Nieman and a whole crowd of people walked up the stairs announcing that the Book Signing event had ended.

In short, we arrived late due to late start earlier in the day. Our guides for the days run of La Presa were 1 1/2 hrs. late throwing off the schedule that I had planned previously. I will contact everyone who had contributed towards Johns gifts and let them know what had happened as well.
