Best Margs on the Gold Coast

CocoLoco - 5-15-2006 at 03:29 PM

In your travels, who have you found makes the best margaritas from Rosarito to Ensenada? Also, what makes them good i.e. fresh lime juice?

I have had some nice ones from the Cantina at La Salina and also Ortega's Patio in Puerto Nuevo. The Cantina has a great happy hour every day where the margs are ridiculously cheap and the bartender was great. I forget his name but he has been there a long time and is there every time I go. Ortega's come in a huge glass and are high octane. You will definitely be buzzing well before you hit the bottom of your first!

I happen to like the way that La Fonda used to make them in the old restaurant. Very high ratio of tequila to triple sec and lime juice (I'm guessing 3.5:1:1), and only enough ice to make it super cold. More like a martini than a classic margarita. Of course, the margs at my place are the best, but they're outside the Ensenada- Rosarito zone.

On a tangent, I saw someone order a pitcher of margs at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Santa Monica the other day using Patron. I've never used the high end tequilas as mixers, since their subtlety tends to get lost in the other ingredients (plus, that's one damn spendy pitcher of margs). The highest grade of tequila I'd use for a mixer woulbe something like Sauza Hornitos, which still has some of that zap of the lower grade stuff. Anyone got any other ideas?

I an not a conniseur of margritas , just like mine on the rocks , while elk hunting in co i bought some mar mix and tequilla mixed 1:1 was really good , found out the margerita mix already had the tokillya in it, but it was good

The guy ordering the Patron ritas was probably just showing off.

I am of the belief that life is too short to drink cheap tequila, besides my head hurts when I do.

99% of the time I enjoy my tequila straight.

The higher end A?ejos can lose a little in a maggie. If I am having a margarita I will use Herradura Reposado or Don Julio A?ejo. I also prefer just a splash of triple sec and a splash of Gran Marnier. I NEVER order a maggie in Mexico without calling the type of tequila that goes in it. Cane liqour does not agree with me.

I had a great Margarita at Calafia recently...

Bedman's margies can't be outdone. Those can be found wherever his moho is located.

Enough said!

Not on the same coast but over the 4th weekend we judged the ones at Petes Camp in San Felipe the best in that area. The bartender used a syrup water. Equal parts of triple sec and tequila, syrup water and fresh squeezed lime juice. My friends were on the rocks and mine were blended.

We used to get some great marg's at Calafia too, back in the 80's...they used white tequila, and a lot of it!

Seem to remember
