I've heard it called a "matavendado" deerkiller. Never heard of anyone getting bit, but they are mean when you shoo them away! Stand up on their hind legs and strike at you with those P-nchers.

matavenado is what they call them here-spelled a little different.

My brother Pepe Smith in Bahia calls them Deerkillers as well, but aren't they also called a Wind Scorpion? If not, I'd like to be corrected on that as that is what I've always pictured them to be.

Thanks,

Sure does. And I'm trying to figure out how to increase the population around my home. Anything that kills ticks and mites has buddy potential...

While we were living in La Paz during the 1960s, a matavenado lurking in a hiking boot bit my foot, leaving a sore resembling a little volcano crater. It looked pretty awful and was right on top of the foot, in plain sight through the straps on my sandals. But it didn't hurt and we didn't have much money, so I didn't go to a doctor. Nearly every Paceno I knew--and a lot of others I didn't--offered their remedies, most of these involving fresh slices of garambullo or cholla. I tried them all. Nothing had any immediate result but nothing did any harm, either, and eventually the thing healed. Took a heckuva long time, though.

Hi all. Been out of the country. The picture is of a Solpugid - harmless whip scorpion.
