Freshwater fish in the sierras

JESSE - 5-28-2006 at 09:11 PM

Anybody seen those fish that live in the freshwater ponds in the sierras in southern Baja? i was amazed that theres decent size fish (6") in those green freshwater ponds, up in the middle of nowhere.

Any info would be appreciated.

yes there are some allot larger than that. many are unic species that are only from here. and I cant find any documentation of them at all. I have studied several in large tanks here at my house in Mulege.

Jesse: If you come to the Party in La Paz on the 15th 0f June, we can talk about Golden Trout at 11,000 Ft. out of La Conte Canyon, also "Crossbows"..

I recently saw (for the first time) some 10" fish in some big ponds at the head of the canyon Boca de la Sierra. The canyon is a registered biosphere so I guess I'll just go on wondering what they are. They look like largemouth bass to me but it's anybody's guess how they could get way up there.

fish

Tried to catch one just off the road in to San Javier once. They look like warmouth bass. Picked up a flyrod popper but just by the feather, and I couldn't hook one.

Ive done some research, its not warmouth, not largemouth bass, and not golden trout, so far i am at a loss as to what they are, some person from the area told me they are virtually unedible, too many very thin bones all over the fish.

Have you seen the underside of their mouths?

Are they a type of sucker fish? Most have thin bones to the outside of their flesh as opposed to most fish which have a layer of flesh outside the bones.

boney fish

Some fish have what's called down on the bayou "feather bones". Suckers and various Carp are held together with a feather bone framework. You can filet 'em, but need to pull the filets apart by hand so that the bones won't be diced etc., don't slice the filets. If you slice the filets you'll end up with a mouth full of bone fragments.
