New Years Baja Style

Dont know about the Cabo area but your request reminded me of a trip a few years back.

Spent X-mas week in Mulege at the serinidad, Xmas trees were a little hard to come by so they used a large manzanita and decorated it with just the right amount of white lites....it was the most beautifull tree I have ever seen!

We spent most of our days hanging out at a small beach on Conception bay called playa coyote, making friends with the people camping under the palapas on the beach and the old man who was the caretaker/manager of the beach. The old man would wander down the beach every evening and stop by to say hello and politely ask for 1 ciggerette and 1 beer which he consumed ever so slowly. When he was done he would wave good bye and wander back to his palapa, Ill never forget his big ole toothless smile!

Most days we spent fishing and snorkeling along the shoreline and exploring one of the islands that was within swimming distance or just kicking it recharging our batteries and enjoying the warm sunshine.

New years eve kinda happened by accident. The group on the beach was pretty mixed, there was a handfull of college students from the university of Oregon, a lumber jack and his wife from canada, a jewish couple and thier son from NY, me and my signifigant other, and of course the weathered old man. It was decided that we would all celebrate the new year together on the beach around a camp fire and that each palapa should bring something edible or drinkable to share with the group.

After a few hours of sharing stories over ice cold cervesas around the fire, the feast began. There was a kilo of fresh tortillas from the tortillaria in Mulege, a pargo roasted on the fire stuffed with cilantro/onions/garlic, scallops and chocolates cooked in the shell on the fire, and fresh tortilla chips with a mango salsa!

After everyone got thier fill we settled in back around the fire and out came a case of champagne which we enjoyed bottle after bottle on the hour every hour celebrating the new year that was occuring somewhere in the world untill it was the new year on our beach!

At some point a couple of locals wandered up to join the fiesta with a bottle of tequilla and a couple of guitars and we finished up the evening hootin and hollerin in drunken spanglish enjoying the company and the warm fire!

The next best thing to being in Baja is reminicing and sharing experinces with others.

Happy turkey day wishes to all......
