Camping at Bahia De Los Angeles (BOLA)?

SoCalAl - 6-5-2006 at 01:52 PM

Hello Nomads,
I would like to know if there is any other camp ground(s) beside camp Gecko, that are away from town, at a reasonable price and have cabins or rooms for rent? I know Doc has pretty much rented out the camp on a year to year basis and the odds that I would find an open cabin this June 30th are slim. Need some outs here? Thanks;D

Diver - 6-5-2006 at 02:13 PM

Larry and Raquels is next to Dagget's north of town and rents hotel style rooms on the beach with restaurant ( food is nothing special ).

SoCalAl - 6-5-2006 at 02:58 PM

I see some of these places on-line but no sure way of knowing the pricing and the availability. Does anyone have any of this info?

Thanks

is also a possibility. It's pretty basic, but a decent location. Right next to the turtle tanks which are pretty darn interesting. Decent beach area, too.

Here's a link to a description

Larry and Raquels is nicer, though.

4baja - 6-6-2006 at 06:45 AM

al i would bet on daggets, nice place with bathrooms and a launch ramp. restaurant next door and easy in and out of town.

David K - 6-6-2006 at 08:17 AM

Al, I think Daggett's is the closest thing to resemble Gecko, see their web site: http://www.campdaggetts.com

Thanks Guys,
I will look into these places and make a choice soon. Either way I intend to go and hope for the best. It always ends up being an adventure anyway. Yeahh HA!!

Well, I know it isn't the same as Camp Gecko but I meant that it has Cabins and Caba?as as does Gecko... and that part is what is the same. Doc makes Gecko special and it is much more wind protected down on the south end.

What about this place:

Juan del Rio - 6-6-2006 at 08:18 PM

Don't know the name but it's next to Larry and Raquel's:

This area looked nice as well:

Juan del Rio - 6-6-2006 at 08:24 PM

this is on the south side of BOLA. Looked like a nice spot as well. Photos were taken Sunday, June 4th.

David K - 6-6-2006 at 09:01 PM

The second shot is Rincon (across the bay from Gecko and is PRIVATE PROPERTY).

I agree Daggetts is a zoo with lots of noisey people during vacation times.

Just go to Gecko and I am sure Doc will TRY and find you something!

Bajaboy - 6-6-2006 at 09:16 PM

I've enjoyed Daggett's the few times I've stayed there. Rueben and his wife are great. The only time I regretted staying there was during a Feb. stay with some RVs. I got the hear the generators, TVs, and blenders instead of the waves of the Cortez. Wherever you end up, make the most of it.

Where in BOLA won't you sweat your balls off in July? I think the Dagget's area is probably cooler than Gecko at that time. But I have generally avoided the area past June, so I dont have first hand experience. Borderline too hot even then.

4baja - 6-7-2006 at 06:10 AM

yea hook you may sweat your balls off but the fishing is excellent that time of year.

SoCalAl - 6-7-2006 at 07:31 AM

Honestly Guys,
The sweating part sounds good when you are lazy like I am and just want a place with four walls and a shade. Somewhere to lay down when you can't function in the heat. Ice usually helps ease the late afternoons and fishing takes care of most the first parts of the day. I can't picture myself in a tent, under a palapa at any place in BOLA. For that matter I would rather stay at one of the motels in town which is the last thing I want to do. The info is great and I appreciate it. Couple ??s, Where is Dagget in relationship to the Islands? Is it in front of Ventana? I sent an email to Daggets' but do not have contact info for Archelon, do they have a valid email address? I am also waiting on Doc to reply to an email about the possibility of picking up a cabin there. If Doc says go, I am at Gecko cause that is where my heart was to begin with. I contacted Doc in March and since then he was not accepting reservations no longer. In a way I am sad this is happening but not surprised. I wish Doc well in his endevors..

Soul Patch - Give a little more history as to how we met. I remember Frank and his wife and I remember hanging out on clam chowder night with Debra and David K. Were you the couple hanging out with David K, Debra and them just north of the boat ramp at Gecko's? Anyway it is nice to here you are OK and still remember Juan and I. Juan is in Jacksonville working on dismatling cell sites but is planning on flying in to make the trip. Knowing that you guys will be in Gecko we will try to make it a point to swing by if we do not end up staying there.

Juan Del Rio - Nice shots and thanks for your help. Do you have more pics of the area. It would be nice if you could email them to me. lxlicea@microtek.com thanks...;D

David K - Like always you are very helpful and ready to lend a hand. Thanks, where are you going to be for the part of the year? Will you be at Gecko?

David K - 6-7-2006 at 07:50 AM

Good Morning Al, it would be as thrill to see you and Juan again... You guys were great to meet around the campfire a couple years ago at Camp Gecko.

I think Debra and I were in town getting the ingrediants for her clam chowder and she suggested Gecko as a place for you guys to camp when you drove up to the market?

Anyway, I do know for sure that it was fun around the campfire at Mike and Mary Ann Humfreville's cabin and that you and Juan came over with some very tastey comida!

My kids and I tent camped next to Humfreville's cabin.

The cabin next door belonged to 'Home Depot' as Debra called him (because of the construction supplies he and his wife brought to build at Gecko)... I do believe 'soulpatch' is 'Home Depot'... *

* UPDATE: My bad, 'Home Depot' (Stan) is 'Bajadtodebone' here on Nomad!

This year I would love to return to Camp Gecko for 4th of July week, but cannot guarantee it... I have traded the gold Tacoma for a bigger 4 door silver one, since that trip. So, if you see it (lots of Baja stickers on the back), come over and lets have a fiesta! :light:

4Baja - I have yet in four visits that I have made to BOLA to catch a Yellowtail... I have caught grouper, bass, sierra, barracuda, skip jack and sevaral misc. I have had Hammer Heads attack the skip jack tuna I was fighting and I have seen Manta Rays under the panga we were fishing. We used to dig out those pretty red and orangish clams back in the early 90's of which I have not seen anymore and though I know yellow tail are the main gamefish around BOLA, I have never caught one. The closest I came was a hook up at Smith Island on a Salas jig three years ago on a 4/0 Penn reel with 40lb test and I could not turn that sucker and he broke off on the rocks. That same day some other folks were using 60lbs test on one of those two speed Penns and landed a couple of 50lb + yellows. I guess they were home bodys just waiting to steel my iron. The only two months I fished were July and August. Natrually I will never go back in August no matter how great the fishing is.

SoCalAl - 6-7-2006 at 07:59 AM

David K - I will be on the look-out and I will bring the ingredients for the Chiles Rellenos as well as the tomatillo. I am looking forward this year to make ceviche out of Yellow Tail and or Barracuda. So a fiesta sounds great anywhere in Baja, even if it is off the old beaten highway, which is any highway downthere. If you can have a hot meal at Catavina (116 degrees) in the middle of August (fried Abolone) you can have lunch anywhere else in Baja or most parts of the world. Maybe a good breakfast with huevos con nopales or chorizo, refried beans, fresh mexican cheese and a fresh molcajete sauce and avocado. Mann I can't wait>>>

That's the only reason to go ANYWHERE in Baja, isn't it? I cant imagine going to BOLA and not fishing.

SoCalAL, I predict your YT luck will change this year. If all else fails, ignore the chances at the homeguard big boys and chase the schoolies under the birds. That can be great fun; chasing them in the boat and throwing lite iron and watching them take it as it skips the surface.

Debra - 6-7-2006 at 03:11 PM

David, Soulpatch isn't "home depot" (Stan) is he? Are you Soulpatch? I get so confused with the board names v people I accually meet.

I thought Stan and Chris moved to Tennessee and Soulpatch shows his local in Point Loma.

Sure wish I could be there for those Chili Rellenos Al! Save me some!?

PacO - 6-7-2006 at 04:57 PM

I think soulpatch used to hang with Jim Morrison.

David K - 6-7-2006 at 07:36 PM

I don't know... Stan emailed me some time ago and I thought it might be him... I recall he decided on a handle different than 'Home Depot'?

I will try Nomad search...

Here He Is Debra and Al...

Home Depot

Hi Deb...yes this is "Home Depot". I just realized in reading your post and mentioning your sons name that you are you! How exciting.

David A. - 6-8-2006 at 09:58 AM

SoCalAl, we are leaving June 29th with the boat in tow. We should have a few boats going out of Gecko that week. Hook up with us and you will catch yellows. Come out to gecko and we can get a gameplan in order.;D

Paulina - 6-8-2006 at 03:30 PM

David,
How was the Yellowtail tourney, did you and Yvonne go? I head that Guillermo won this year.

P<*)))><

David A. - 6-9-2006 at 06:41 AM

We were both there. Yes, Guillermo did win. The yellows were not plentiful untill a couple of days after the contest. Yvonne did not go out and I went out one day to fish. Mostly worked on our place. I was walking the beach by Rincon and saw Yellows breezing 5 feet from the shore chasing bait. July will be a fishing vacation:bounce:.

SoCalAl - 6-9-2006 at 09:48 AM

Hi David A,
That sounds exciting. Definately will come by.. Fishing gear? 20lb set up should be enough? Or should I bring anything heavier than that?
Thanks for the offer.

Debra, sooner or later we will run into each other again and when we do all you need to say is the Word. I will cook thise chiles for you anywhere they sell the ingredients and there is some fire.

David A. - 6-9-2006 at 10:33 AM

Bring blue and white iron, and bait rigs. We usually use 30lb on 6 to 1 retrieve reels. You should not have any problem with 20 unless you hook up with one of the home guards.:wow: You will know I am there when you see a 23ft Bayrunner Baja infront of Gecko. :bounce:

cpg - 6-21-2006 at 10:48 AM

Hey David A please post some pictures from your trip.
I am heading to that area (probally San francisquito) with a kayak on the same time as you. I am hoping they are still close to shore.
