Not quite sure what the World Cup has to do with Baja. But, I have watched every game so far. Between the WC and the Tour de France, I'll be watching way too much television during June and July.

What the heck has Alexi Lalas been into? That sucker looks younger now than when he was a player. Maybe it's losing the beard. I didn't recognize him. I'm "working from home" this morning so as not to miss USA's opener. A lot riding on Keller, hope he's in top shape.

JESSE - 6-12-2006 at 03:25 PM

Even do my bet is that Italy will win it all, my personal favorites have been the Czech republic for a couple of years now, when they are on, they play the best soccer in the planet, and the U.S. shouldnt feel so bad, NOBODY would have defeated the Czechs the way they played today.

In my opinion, they have the top team in the world, only problem is, they lack consistency.

BAJA???

thebajarunner - 6-12-2006 at 05:53 PM

I run a good post a while back on a generic Mexico topic and it gets bounced, now these on Copa Mundial stick.

Oh well, I was in Quito last week when Ecuador upset Poland.

Top scorer so far: Spain- 4-0 over Croatia. The Spaniards are hot to trot- the team to watch. - In contrast to Brasil's phoned-in ho hum 1-0, nothing spectacular performance. "El Mundial de Ronaldhino"? I don't think so.

Best defense since 1939: Poland. Although finally losing 0-1 to Germany, the Poles held back the Krauts 0-0 for a full 90 minutes until a final estocada in the first minute of OT. The Germans had possession for seemingly the entire game with numerous shots on goal but sinking none until the final moment. Poland played pure defense just hoping to stretch out the tie. The German goalie might as well have taken a nap. Alas, the blitzkrieg finally broke through. Deja-vu all over again.

Sorry, compa but at this point the best performance I've seen is from Italy - the worst from the USA.

I am normally pretty much of an Italy basher. The team is, more often than not, a collection of brilliant individuals that are more concerned with highlighting their brilliance than with performing as a team. This time, I saw the possibility of something different. If they perform like they did against Ghana - hang on. They were agressive from the beginning and took the initiative, something Italy often has a problem with. And, they played as a team. I guess we'll see how serious they are on Saturday.

I agree completely about Brasil - what a disappointment. And Germany - that was not a result that reflected what happened. Though I would LOVE to see a final between Germany and Italy - an opportunity to settle some ancestral scores, not to mention that these are the two teams with 3 wins, behind the "cariocas".

Oso - 6-14-2006 at 07:01 PM

Sorry, I missed Italy's first game. What was the score?

Disappointing Coverage

MrBillM - 6-15-2006 at 06:31 PM

The one thing I was looking forward to at the World Cup was the media Riot Coverage, but it has been a disappointment. Even when they've got a good riot going, the media isn't giving it the
TV time that it should. I'm beginning to think that the fix is in.

NOBODY is watching Hockey.

MrBillM - 6-16-2006 at 04:55 PM

It was pointed out the other day that The Women's College World Series broadcast on ESPN outdrew the Stanley Cup game. I can understand that. Watching those College chicks bend over to field a grounder has to be better than anything in Hockey.

Actually, I don't care about violence IN sports. I rarely see anything too violent in Baseball. I prefer to watch violence in real life where people REALLY get hurt. Schadenfreude and all of that.
Speaking of which, the good folks in Belgrade, Serbia made up for the lack of street violence in Germany. A well-covered fan riot, complete with Cops busting heads with nightsticks and a railing collapsing, dropping dozens onto the level below. Pretty tame, though, with only a few dozen hospitalized. A few deaths would have been more entertaining. Beggars can't be choosers, though. I appreciate the effort.

I'm still rooting for a good "NeoN-zi" turnout/riot before the Final. Hope springs eternal.

El Mundial de las Sorpresas

Oso - 6-16-2006 at 06:21 PM

Angola turned out to be a tougher nut to crack than (at least I) expected with a very aggressive offense, taking it to "San Oswaldo" repeatedly. And yes, Ricardo-one of a handful of "white guys" among the Black Antelopes (or Impalas Negras)- is indeed an excellent "golly" [sic]. Kinda surprising to see the racial mix represented in this former Portuguese colony, considering that the Africans had plenty of reason for hatred towards their former plantation masters and the rather obvious resemblance of the machete and half a gear wheel symbol to a hammer and sickle. Mexico definitely missed Borgetti, it's a maybe if he'll be back for Wednesday's match against Portugal.

Not much surprise from the always competent Dutch, but will they be "always a bridesmaid"?

I knew I wouldn't get much work out of my employees, so what the hay- sent out for pizza and gave them an extra hour for lunch.

Well, tomorrow is do or die for the gringos. If we lose to the Azurri, the 3rd game will be irrelevant.

A very good morning to all the soccer fans AND the turd on the shower room floor as well!

Not even inane non-sequiturs can spoil my mood. It's Poppa Day weekend. Mine's been gone awhile so I don't have to buy anything. Al contrario, I got a new recliner to park my nalgas in. The Persians just got handed their second loss. More games ahead and it'll be too hot outside for yard work:tumble: (As if I needed an excuse to sit on my burro)

I think I could even be philosophical about a loss to Italy today, IF it's clearly due to superior skills and we play our hearts out instead of standing around with our thumbs up our butts. Another P poor performance COULD ruin the day. But that's not positive thinking...

USA! USA! USA!

Oso - 6-17-2006 at 09:54 AM

1-0 over Czechs at the half, whoodathunkit? If the Africans can keep it going through the second half it's spozed to be good news for us, but I forget exactly how. At the same time, it doesn't reflect that well on us, having our butts handed to us by the second ranked team in the world then seeing them stopped by newbies:?:

Not exactly Maradona's "mano de Dios" but Marquez's screw-up and Bravo's blown penalty kick do not prevent Mexico from advancing. Menos mal. Now it's either Argentina or Holland on Sunday.

Bruce R Leech - 6-21-2006 at 09:42 AM

now Mexico is in big trouble :O

Oso - 6-21-2006 at 05:15 PM

At least they made it to the "Octavos de Final". Had to hit the road halfway through the Argentina/Holland match. Listened to the rest on AM radio in Spanish. Ended zip-zip, which means Mexico faces Argentina Sunday (I cannot explain why). And yes, this is trouble.

Just an afterthought: It may not be necessary to explain that my previous reference to "turd on the shower room floor" was purely metaphorical in nature but I wish to clarify that anyway, just in case anyone took it personal. I suppose I could have used "fly in the ointment" but the former seemed more sports related.

Vandenberg: One of my employees asked why your country is called "Paises Bajos". I explained that it was mostly at or below sea level and much of the territory had been recovered from the sea by building dykes, dams and levees. "Isn't it in danger of flooding from storms etc.?" "Yes," I said,"but they know that so they invest in technologically advanced protective systems. That's why New Orleans has asked advice from Dutch experts to prevent another Katrina." This discussion brought other questions, such as why it is PaiseS, NetherlandS, etc. in plural rather than singular? Why isn't it simply "Holland"?

Other than "Stoner Heaven", just what is the "official" name in Dutch, English and Spanish? Enlightenment please...

Roberto - 6-21-2006 at 07:54 PM

An interesting perspective from a friend (Mexicano) who works with me. He is a complete diehard soccer fan, and he feels that a match with Argentina is far preferable to one with Holland, because Mexico plays Argentina very often and they are a known quantity, as it were. Psychologically, that is much better to the Dutch, who they haven't played in years. Interesting perspective.

Dave - 6-21-2006 at 08:20 PM

Given what I saw, Mexico should wish to have played the lowlanders. It wasn't nearly as close as the tie would indicate. Argentina couldn't put the ball in the net.

The Sculpin - 6-22-2006 at 02:36 PM

Bruce Arena must go. He has completely gutted any spirit and desire the US team had before bracket play. Can't blame the players 'cuz this is the best and most experienced team would could field. At no other time has US Soccer had as many of its players playing in Europe or the Premier, so it ain't the players. The last 20 minutes of the Ghana game showed that. It's the coaching. Bad calls are just that, everyone gets them so they're never a factor. Sometimes they go your way, sometimes not. Nope, it's the coaching. Who the hell starts a "must win" game with a 4-5-1!?!? Get a grip! In the second half, Ghana wants to protect their lead and guess what - they go to a 4-5-1 - perfect DEFENSIVE move. Why the hell does US Soccer insist on having an "american" coach. This is the only federation that does this. US Soccer has it's head so far up its @ss that we will never get anywhere unless they all resign. Jeeez...look what they did to the women! They took all their world cup money, and left a crappy coach to blow the next cup! Sounds familiar? Hienrichs should never have been the coach!

...and don't get me started on Dave O'Brien, the commentator. My god, go back to whatever sport you were doing because you certainly have no clue about this one! He can't get the cadence right, has no clue about momentum, won't shut up....jeeez what a loser. We'd be better off with that guy who announces the horse races fro Hollywood park and Del Mar. At least he has some passion.

Crimony....don't get me started......:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Anyway, Germany looks solid, as does Argentina. Dark horse would be Ecuador or Portugal. Sorry to say but I don't thing Mexico has the gas.....they're out of shape....too many of Tias's tamales after practice!!

Bruce R Leech - 6-22-2006 at 02:50 PM

thanks The Sculpin that was a good report.

Roberto - 6-22-2006 at 04:12 PM

Sculpin, I agree with much of what you said - especially the commentator part, where I agree with all you said, but to me the biggest lack is in understanding the game, tactically. Compare them to the Mexican commentators, or any of the European ones.

This U.S. team was hyped beyond it's capabilities, which seem to be few, aside from being physically fit. Remember Alexei Lalas predicting that this World Cup would be between the U.S. and Brazil?:lol::lol::lol:

The level of experience of this formation, compared to teams like Germany, Italy, England, Brazil, Checksolovakia (oops, they're the Chek repulbic now), Holland, (even France) and most of the other teams in this tournament is minimal. Frankly, that's pretty hard to bridge. I think it's pretty amazing that the U.S. got where they did. Most of the players in this cup are professionals that play in outstanding national leagues on a daily basis, where they make millions of dollars a year. What does the U.S. have - the MLS? Please! And, though there are undoubtedly some good players in the U.S. formation, look at the depth of the other teams.

The coaching is an important piece for sure, but the experience factor plays there as well. What's Arenas background? Again, the MLS, UVA and (oh yeah) the U.S. national team. It's a different league altogether and a lot of work needs to be done before the U.S. can field a team to compete at the highest levels in the world and hope to win. Remember, they scored ONE goal in all three games.

As far as predictions, I don't know, but Italy looks pretty good to me.

[Edited on 6-22-2006 by Roberto]

Oso - 6-22-2006 at 06:21 PM

Today, maybe 70-80 minutes after "the" game, one of my employees (a die-hard Americanista) asked if the rumor was true that Arena would resign. Whoa... talk about wings on rumors. More than one source has speculated on Bruce's lack of imagination and sticking to a purely defensive posture when aggresive attack was called for. I can't reconcile "can't blame the players" with "partly to blame". One or the other, please. But, it's usually the coach that gets fired....

2-1 Ghana, well earned.

Don't worry, you won't suffer any longer. With the exception of Univision, network interest in the rest of the tournament will sink to Mr.BillM's level. Look for an occasional soundbite on ESPN and absolutely nothing further from ABC.

Might as well watch the rest on Univision etc. and improve your Spanish. The more that goes in one ear, the less that comes out the other. SOME of it has got to get stuck in the middle.

And if Mexico bites the dust... Well, aside from my somewhat mandatory first two allegiances, my favorite national team has always been and probably always will be...

BRAAAAAAAASsiere

The kind that fastens in the rear

That holds the things I love so dear

BRASsiere, BrasSIERE

dum dum dum da da da da da

Slumbering through the first half with ?JAPON! :o actually leading 1-0, Brazil finally woke up with a classic Ronaldo header in the first minute of stoppage. Then the "old" Cariocas came back with a vengeance, whipping the Nips like a rented mule 4-1.

I'm almost ready to put money on Brazil to win the cup one more time...

If nothing else, they've always got the best looking fans. Anybody remember the focus on Ronaldo's girlfriend 4 years ago?:O

USA Ghana way.

Bye Bye. I'm so sad.

Most of it. Saw Japan's goal and Ronaldo's just before halftime then foolishly went back to my office and actually did some work for a while and missed the next two goals at the start of the second half. I guess they've been resting and "looking ahead". Hopefully they've got that samba rhythm going from here on.

Ronaldinho sure is a goofy looking kid, but...

Well, I was wrong. ABC is covering Germany-Sweden in the first game of the second round/round of 16/octavos de final (take your pick).

The blizkrieg is on with the Krauts 2 up in the first 15 min. , 2-0 at the half with the Swedes looking f....ed- playing with 10. Lucic out on a second yellow.

Overzealous refs seem to be a feature of this World Cup, more yellow flowing on the pitch than the mens rooms.

ESPN or Univision for the Mexico-Argentina match:?:

woody with a view - 6-24-2006 at 09:19 AM

still getting a grip on the wholw world cup thing. usually the only time i really watch the other football is during the world cup. a real fairweather fan, to say the least. i do notice that the english premier league seems to have some of the best games when i do watch on fox, tho....

BTW, is it just me or are the commercials by, i think adidas, about "jose+10" just classic? love 'em.....

Oso - 6-24-2006 at 09:30 AM

Beckenbauer?

Yeah, love 'em.:tumble:

Me too, once every 4 years is pretty much the only time I get excited about any sport. The level of play is so much more intense because the stakes are so much higher.

No change at the final, Ger 2-Swe-0. Germany has a shut-out going.

If somehow Mexico gets past Argentina, they'll face the Teutons next.

A lot more likely it's Germany-Argentina in the quarter finals.

FINALLY ! A decent riot has broken out in Stuttgart, Germany after the match between Germany and Sweden with British (?) and German "Fans ?" beating the holy crap out of each other and anyone else who happens to be around. Now that's what Sports are all about. Why, exactly, the Brits are peeed over Sweden's loss is beyond me, but who cares ? Good aerial photos, though.
