Hijacked from another forum but good info:

We had our Toyota Forerunner stolen 6/1 at the San Quintin La Pinta. After a full day of visiting the San Quintin Police, Federal Police and Municipal Administrative Offices we finally continued the trip south. Please be aware that this can happen, even with a locked/alarmed vehicle, nice hotel and well lit parking. We will never stay in San Quintin again due to the total disinterest of the local police and the night staff at the hotel. Lessons learned....accurately estimate your MX car insurance with a reputable company, alarm and "club" your car whenever you stop, consider that MX car insurance will not cover contents. Nobody spoke English in this whole day of sitting around in offices. Fortunately, we had above average Spanish or it would have been impossible. If you have a theft in Baja, also contact the Tourist Office in Ensenada to file a report. They will contact foreigners if items are recovered. Other than that, the trip was great

Also make sure to bring a large dog with you. Before you leave car, give dog an alka seltzer tablet....works wonders!

What a GREAT idea! Most thieves will not disturb a car/truck with a barking (rabid) dog.... right?

I really feel for the people with the stolen vehicle. I will never forget the sinking awful feeling of walking out of a store in Guatemala and seeing the empty parking space where our truck had been. And somehow, it was stolen out of this small parking lot in a good part of town, and in front of three armed security guards. The Guatemalan police? :barf:

After over a year in Central America, it was the only time we did not use the Club.

Install a kill switch....well hidden, they are very effective. I switched the fuel pump cut off circuit from the front bumper(set up from factory for front end collisions)....and dont forget to use it!!

You know that this kind of stuff happens everywhere.
A few years back, a friend and his 11 year old son were headed down for a month of camping and fishing. They stopped in OB to get a few more lures and other fishing needs and when they came out of the store, their pickup and trailered aluminum boat were gone. At that point all they had was the bag of fishing gear they had in their hands.
He eventually got his pickup back but nothing else.

So be careful out there

The first place to look for your stolen car is behind the police station. :cool:

Years ago on the mainland a Canadian couple in their 70 got their camper hijacked and they drove them into a desolate area where the husband ended up getting shot in the jaw but they managed to escape and went to the nearest Clinic which was right next to the Police station, where they parked. When they came back out of the clinic to report their carjacking they went to their camper it was stripped of most everything.!!!!!!!
