Old Mill Hotel - San Quintin

bajabound2005 - 6-15-2006 at 05:43 PM

Wow, we're stunned no one has reviewed this place! Located south of San Quintin near Don Eddy's and the Old Mill Restaurant. There are signs on the Transpeninsular to direct you. The hotel (really a motel, but the name is hotel) sits right on the bay. There is a boat dock and plenty of guides with boats and fishing gear to take you out if you're so inclined. Just under 30 rooms, including a newer 2 story section. We stayed in the original section. The best word to describe this place is "quaint". The room are situated around a u-shaped "yard". Lots of tables and chairs outside, including bbqs. There is also a lovely outdoor fireplace with tables and chairs. Rooms run $35- $45 or so. Typically a queen size and twin bed in each, and even a kitchenette with stove, fridge, sink. The owner has a "residents' bar", ice chests filled with ice-packed Pacifico to which you just help yourself (be sure to return the bottles!). Our dogs were welcomed with no extra fee (though we left a few bucks for the housekeeper who has to deal with all that dog hair!). The poochies enjoyed chasing the resident cats around. Owners Jim and Nancy Harer have been there 11 years. Nice folks. Don't let them steer you away from the Old Mill Restaurant, which in spite of what they might tell you, is quite good. Plus you don't have to drive anywhere!
Cash only (no surprises there). To find them, take the road toward Old Mill then follow the signs to Don Eddy's (that might be Eddie's). Just before the Old Mill Restaurant there is the last sign pointing you to the right to Don Eddy's. Take that right and you'll see Old Mill Hotel on your left.
Email: oldmill@telnor.net or make resv toll free at 800 479 7962 or call 01 61 616 56030. Surprisingly (at least to us) they were full up last night on a Wednesday with nothing special going on in the area, so do make a resv!

I forget to mention the rooms are spotless!

I'm sure it's been mentioned before. I've had a good experience there. McGyver had a bad one. Don't know which is the fluke, but I'd probably try it again. Much better than Cielito for sure.

bajabound2005 - 6-15-2006 at 06:19 PM

Yeah, nothing was stolen from us!

wrk - 6-15-2006 at 08:02 PM

We always stay at the Old Mill on our way south. And of course eat at Jardines - see earlier post. Nothing but good experiences at both places.

woody with a view - 6-16-2006 at 11:10 AM

first time experience last october was great. loved the "welcome" beer. restraunt was relly good, or i was really hungry. combination mexicana !

Martyman - 6-16-2006 at 11:32 AM

Come on folks, Cielito Lindo kicks butt on the Old Mill. Cielito Lindo c-cktails and food are much better and autentico then old mill. Been to Old Mill once will never go again

woody with a view - 6-16-2006 at 02:11 PM

speaking of ceilito lindo, about 20 years ago a buddy and i were on the way south and stopped in. we had something to eat and drink and pitched tents on the dunes?/beach. about 2 in the morning we almost got killed by marauding ATC's. never been back, always want to though.

Oso - 6-16-2006 at 06:53 PM

Uh, Marty? Excuse me, but this is the Baja ACCOMODATIONS Review forum.

I can't offer any comparison re: the (separately owned and managed) restaurant at Old Mill. Never tried it. Last time I stayed there on the way back from the race, I had steaks to use up before the crossing. So, I used the weber in front of the room and took a plate to the nice guy in the office. Aside from the free Pacifico on arrival, when I inquired about where I could buy some charcoal he'd given me half a bag free of charge.

I found the ROOM nice, simple but spotlessly clean and pleasant, for exactly the same price as I'd previously paid for the Skid Row ambiance at Cielito Feo. Even a mildly discriminating wino would have found the grungy, moldy, funky quarters, furnished by Goodwill Industries, to be marginally preferable to a urine-stained alleyway.

To each his own. I'll go back to Old Mill. I'll have to hear about some TOTAL renovation at Cielito before I'll consider it again.

capt. mike - 6-17-2006 at 07:25 AM

yeah, i agree - my esposa can't stand staying at CL because its sooooooooo grungy!! now, i don't mind that part of it and the bar and restaurant work for me good enuff, but since it has a very good runway its the only game in town for me. I'd go a lot if they'd clean it up enuff for the ladies. it needs a pool or jacuzz too. the coastal temps are perfect to get out of the phx heat, but alas......it's a half star on the 5 star rating system!

but the ambiance was always improved when Dave and Juanita were around - their smiles made it all worthwhile.

i hope they do condos there eventually. too bad the WX is so gloomy most of the time. i hate that.

turtleandtoad - 6-17-2006 at 07:58 PM

On the other hand, if you're trying to get to the Old Mill after a rain, you better have a DUK or a very tall car. The puddles are not only big (up to a 1/4 mile long) but deep (deep enough to drown my Chevy Cavalier). And that's not to mention the mud. You're only choice is to take detours through the adjoining fields. If you're lucky, someone else has already done the trailblazing.

bajabound2005 - 6-17-2006 at 10:48 PM

the roads have been "moved around" a bit since we were there in the Fall to our most recent trip this week. This may or may not improve the conditions in the rain. The "new" road was in pretty good shape. But that wind!

Old Mill

BajaDanD - 6-18-2006 at 10:18 PM

We have stayed at the CL a few times and at the Old Mill a few times and at Don Eddies a bunch of times I like Don Eddies best. Wont stay at CL again. I'll camp on the beach first. Jardines has good food but we are usually too tired from fishing to drive there to eat.
They have done a lot of work on the airstrip next to Campo Lorenzo next to Don Eddies
as far as the road in to the Old Mill I have seen it flooded in many places, many times over the years and I was always able to get through. Even in a Toyota Echo. Someone always creates a detour around the water by going through someones fence.

capt. mike - 6-19-2006 at 06:30 AM

bajadand - the strip at campo lorenzo is getting good play on the BBP. didn't realize Don Eddies was close, what are their rates and can you describe the accomodations and amenities?:light:

bajabound2005 - 6-19-2006 at 08:25 AM

Capt. Mike: never stayed at Don Eddy's but here's the website (which has not been updated for a while...) http://www.doneddies.com/
It's within walking distance of the Camp Lorenzo airstrip and is right next to the Old Mill.

Cielito...

eetdrt88 - 6-19-2006 at 08:27 AM

what a dive:wow::lol: always stop there comin and goin and probably always will...

SiReNiTa - 6-19-2006 at 08:41 AM

i have stayed there only once with my aunt and uncle from canada and it was awsome...almost like home listening to the waves and all...but i did not get to see the view because we left at like 4 in the morning we had a long trip...but the beds were nice!! and the restaurant we went to had big palm trees and lights and a guy passed out (drunk as hell) by a truck...we thought he was dea...yikes!!!! but the food and the mariachi were awsome!

Paula - 6-19-2006 at 08:44 AM

We used to stay at Cielito and it surely is a dive. Last time through we stayed at Old Mill and liked it.
But I'm glad we were at Cielito during the rodeo a year or so ago, as the norte?o dj and dancing were pretty spectacular!

turtleandtoad - 6-19-2006 at 08:46 AM

I like Cielito because of it's RV section. Even tho it's near an old illegal dump (which I've never seen being used), and power is only available when they start their generator, and the local (friendly) dogs roam around looking for a visitor dog to play with, and the access road can be one long washboard, I still go there. It's got nice RV sites with plenty of maneuvering room, within walking distance to the Wet Buzzard and the beach, the bar is friendly, and the food is good (if you know what to order).

Of course I've also been known to frequent the Old Mill and Don Eddies but I'm not sure I want to try them in my longer Class A.

SiReNiTa - 6-19-2006 at 08:49 AM

is don eddies the restaurant that is on the other side of the hotel??? way expensive...

Don Alley - 6-19-2006 at 08:54 AM

OK, Cielito Lindo is way overdue for a major remodel. But I like the messy crab dinners, and the location.

The beach near Cielito Lindo is on the open Pacific...very nice, and I hear the surf fishing is great for perch. La Pinta is also on the Pacific, but it is a La Pinta and I hear someone will steal your perch. :)

We really liked the Old Mill, but may try Don Eddie's next time (but is it dog friendly?).

capt. mike - 6-19-2006 at 12:03 PM

thx, i checked the web site, looks good but doesn't really give much on the site amenities, like it shows the front of the rooms i guess, but no patios, decks, courtyards or grounds. we won't fish so looking for pleasant areas to hang out and read, drink, and if we get bored, drink.;)

the aerials at campo lorenzo's site give a good impression generally, we'll head over there soon and re-check the area, definitely an upgrade from CL which requires long trudging just to get to the beach.

Martyman - 6-19-2006 at 01:03 PM

Dear Oso:
I didn't realize you were one of those high faluting (sic) types. If you don't enjoy the excellent smell of Raid in your hotel room then...I can't hang out with you. The greasy crab at CL is to die for!!

Oso - 6-19-2006 at 02:54 PM

It's not that I'm so high faluting, it's just that I don't enjoy being ripped off. The rooms at CL are worth $15 to $20 tops. If that's what they charged, I wouldn't complain. I never cough up $80 to stay in a La Pinta and I've slept on a pile of angle iron with a dirty canvas tarp over me on the dock at Cozumel. Minimal accomodations at a minimal cost are ok and I could see paying a premium for luxury. But for $40-$50, I expect at least as "nice" as a Motel 6.

As far as crabs are concerned, they're fine in a restaurant, but I don't care for them in the bedding.

One more time: This is the Baja Accomodations Review forum. There's another one for restaurants.

SiReNiTa - 6-19-2006 at 04:08 PM

tottaly agree...oso you and my mom would get along great..haha!

Bruce R Leech - 6-19-2006 at 07:31 PM

I think we Nomads need to have our own star system for rating restaurants and hotels based on value. for instance Baja cactus hotel-would rate 5 stars and also his gas station. and the new york deli would get 5 stars. now remember this is based on value. the old mill restaurant would be 3.5-3.7 and there hotel maybe 3

bajabound2005 - 6-19-2006 at 07:41 PM

value is in the eye of the beholder...now we need a set of standards for the objective star opinion for VALUE.

Don Eddies

BajaDanD - 6-19-2006 at 11:39 PM

The room rates at Don Eddies are around 45 a night to 65 during summer for one of the bigger rooms most of the rooms have a front and back interance. The back is a slider that looks out on the bay. The resturant/Bar is upstairs, nice view, there is an outside deck upstairs if you want to sit outside and eat/drink. The parking is safe and all gravel. You can throw a rock from Don Eddies parking lot and hit the runway. Ive seen a lot of improvements done to it along with lengthening it. Have not used it but I've seen planes land there. The old Mill has no view from the rooms. The food at the Cannery resturant and the food at Don Eddies is about the same, OK but not great and too expensive for what you get.

BajaDanD - 6-19-2006 at 11:44 PM

The pic in my Avatar was taken on the beach in front of Cielito Lindo 3 or 4 years ago we were driving out to the point on the beach and found this truck burried in the sand
Like all other vehicles abandoned in Baja it had been stripped

[Edited on 6-20-2006 by BajaDanD]

David K - 6-20-2006 at 12:15 AM

Here's the same beach, but with sand dollars instead of pick up trucks to see!

capt. mike - 6-20-2006 at 06:42 AM

bajaDanD, thx for that input. we are going soon, if we brought a grill and coupla of ice chests, any problem with sort of camping out of the rooms? did it at Punta Pescadero once and had a great experience, saved a bunch with our own bar stocks and meals/snacks.

how is the beach there, close to walk to and with sand/clean?
any surf fishing? i know its on the bahia falso but not sure what that means as to what can be caught from shore.

Oso - 6-20-2006 at 07:23 AM

At Old Mill, there are grills with tables and chairs in front of the rooms for your use. It's a pleasant enough courtyard but the view from Don Eddie's sounds intriguing, may try it next time.

bajabound2005 - 6-20-2006 at 08:12 AM

There is no "beach" at Old Mill or Don Eddie's. Both, next to each other, are on the Estuary of SQ Bay. Nice boat launch though. The beach at Cielito Lindo/La Pinta area is fantastic! If I remember right, it's called Playa del Oro. Miles and miles of white sand. I think CL has camping as does the Old Mill (but that's not part of the hotel).

turtleandtoad - 6-20-2006 at 08:18 AM

For camping, go to the Gypsy's Beach Camp, just past CL and directly adjacent to the beach. It's also the location of the Wet Buzzard, so outstanding food and drink are on-site.

CAMPING

BajaDanD - 6-20-2006 at 10:49 PM

There are BBQs at Don Eddies or you can use your own We've BBQed oysters and fish on them many times. When we camp down there we stay at El Pabillion's its just south of the La Pinta but it can get busy with ATVs We've camped at Gypsys too. We always spend a day on the beach somewhere between El Soccorro and Gypsy's and on up to the mouth of the bay, where the comercial pangeros keep there boats. There is a road from Gypsy's that goes out there but it floods at high tide in some places. If you want remote camping turn off Mex.1 at the military base in SQ and follow the road all the way to the coast the road then goes south past a few houses then along the beach for a few miles then over a hill and along some rocks. then by a few more houses and a serf camp then out on to the beach again at the end of the beach the road climbs a dune and goes over to the bay side of the peninsula there are camsites there 4x4 needed nice private beaches great serf and kayaking somwhat protected from the wind
Dont tell anybody I told you how to get there
You will pass by this bus near the serf camp

camping at Gypsy's

BajaDanD - 6-20-2006 at 10:57 PM

Wet Buzzard lost its Liquer liscense no beer any more. We go for the breakfast burritos. There is covered camping at Gypsy's not sure what that is about

turtleandtoad - 6-21-2006 at 08:14 AM

Gypsy's covered camping.
This is some old restrooms that have been converted to indoor tent camping for when the wind/rain gets to be too much. They are just walls and a roof, no bathroom fixtures or plumbing is left.

Sorry to hear about the Zopilote Mojado losing it's liquor license. But it's still got great breakfast burritos and other food.

marla - 2-27-2007 at 12:44 PM

I love the Old Mill and so do my kids. I would like to say I love Cielito Lindo because of its fascinating historyand kids playground, but it is TOO GRUNGY now. The new owner should upgrade his property because he's losing his investment by allowing it to get so rundown that people like me who would LIKE to love it can't. Last time I stayed there the beds were like sleeping on rocks, the bathroom had a broken window repaired with cardboard and someone had punched a hole through the wall and there was mold on the ceiling. Gross. Compared to the comfy quarters and nice bay at the Old Mill, along with pleasant owners, no contest! Last time the Old Mill was full, we stayed at Don Eddie's and it was fine too. Big room.

DianaT - 2-27-2007 at 11:10 PM

Probably the reason the owners of the Old Mill Motel will not suggest the restuarant is that there has been an incredible amount of litigation between all the parties involved --- been going on for several years. Lots of bad blood.

Not quite the facts... Gypsy's RV Park was started after Dave & Juanita sold the Cielito Lindo Motel & Restaurant business in 2001... The indoor camping room was designed for us tent campers who needed some protection from the winds and rain that frequents San Quintin... It was never a bathroom... The bathroom building is the same as always, since the RV park was built.

I used the Indoor Camping room a few times because it was always raining when we arrived! (2002-2004)

It was a great idea... we put our cots or air mattress on the sand floor and had a dry, wind free night!

I Love the OLD MILL. One evening last summer after too many Margaritas I left my purse with documents and lots of money hanging on the back of my chair. The next day I was past Mama's when i realized that i had left it! I drove back as fast as I could not wanting to lose my passport and FM3, and sure enough when i walked into the restaurant my purse was hanging on the light fixture. The waiter who has served me the night before was all smiles, saying that he saved it for me. I gave him a BIG tip when I found that nothing was missing, not a cent. All my possesions were safe.
I am pretty sure that would not have happened at CL as sad to say my favorite crab place has gone way down hill.

Well, that's what I get for believing a couple of drunk gringo's at the Wet Buzzard (when it was still "wet"). :o Since my camping consists of leveling my RV, putting out the slides, and firing up the satellite dish, I didn't have the first-hand experience of you intrepid rock-sleepers. :P Although I did look in the door once.

turtleandtoad - 2-28-2007 at 08:50 AM

It's been a couple of years since I've been out to the Old Mill, have they improved the road? It was a long, narrow lake last time I was there.

I made the mistake of turning onto the OM road after heavy rain. The road was underwater for miles. Went off into a field to turn around in an 30' RV towing a car. A milagro got me through. The road, in the past, is a major washboard. Go slow.

DanO - 2-28-2007 at 06:07 PM

I was out there right after Christmas and the road was fine. A bit rocky at the beginning, silty later on. Compared to the one out to the oyster farms or any number of others, it was a pleasure cruise of a few minutes. Going fast always seems to help (or at least make it end sooner).

I was in San Quintin the weekend of August 30th 2008 and the old mill was closed. Nobody was there and there were for rent signs in the window.

the restaurant is closed and available for rent; the hotel is very open. we just spent a couple of days there, returning yesterday. Trip report coming up!

Did you hear if there are any prospects to take over the restaurant/bar? Used to like going over there but not much lately since they closed. Once we are down there full time I might look into it. Ran a similar operation in Argentina years ago.

Anybody in the area interested in participating???

Udo - 9-20-2008 at 10:41 AM

Does anyone know what he restaurant rent is going for?
depending on the rent, a parnership with BAJAGRINGO could work.

Oso - 9-20-2008 at 10:45 AM

Last time I was on this thread, I was thinking of trying Don Eddie's. I may yet, but Jardines was so nice last time that it would be hard not to go back, especially now that they've opened a classy new restaurant next to the hotel (that used to be the restaurant). Only drawback, for some, is it's not on the water. For others, it's a pleasant break from the wind and sand and the garden itself is very tranquil and pretty.

dao45 - 9-20-2008 at 02:52 PM

We just got back and stayed at the old mill overnight. The owners were very friendly.the resturant at don eddies was without a doubt one of the worst we have eaten in in baja. All in all a nice experience but wouldnt want to spend more than a day or two there

We ate at Done Eddies a few weeks back. Was not an experience that would inspire us to return. Food and service were bad.

Did we meet you there? We were there Wed - Friday...

I think the restaurant at the Old Mill could be a success with a limited but varied menu, and half the real estate. The place is huge. No idea about the restaurant rent BUT, the day we left the marines were pretty much moving in. But that will go into our trip report. Had breakfast at Don Eddie's on Friday. It was the usual, we don't have this, we don't have that....but there were 4 of us and all of the food was very good. A little pricy but that is because the portions are HUGE. The boys had the "black forest ham steak" and eggs (and the ham steak alone was enough for 4 people), I had the machaca with veggies, Nancy had the cheese omelet. All excellent though the atmosphere is somewhat depressing.

We had dinner Thursday at Jardines -- again an excellent meal and too large of portions. Everyone had fish of some sort - all prepared differently, all excellent.

Could not tell if the RV park was open or not...the little store was open but had almost nothing in inventory. Some t-shirts, about 8 beers and few bottles of water. We bought all the beer (except the Bud Light - left that there for one of you)!

Thanks for the info I assumed the entire place was closed hotel and all!!! I took 8 guys down from Colonet on dirt bikes for lunch and ended up eating at Don Eddies. I was really let down and a little embarrassed by the quality of food that Don Eddies served. I cant wait to try Jardines. But I think I will really miss sitting on the deck of the Old Mill having lunch and enjoying looking out over the bay. Hopefully someone will get the restaurant going again soon.

bajabound2005 - 9-20-2008 at 08:42 PM

well, you can ALWAYS bring your own food and enjoy the deck! The road this time of year is fine; yes, rocky just off the highway and then it just goes to washboard. When it's wet, it's a real crap shoot....and we've been through it many times is all kinds of weather - we prefer dry to wet!

As far as renting the returant at the old mill.Might be a real good idea to do some research on whats going on there.Seems to be a very rich guy interested in buying everything there and turning it into San Diego South. He has the l;ocal police in his pocket and wants to buy the old mill which isnt for sale. The owner gets hassled and stopped by the police everytime he leaves the property. We were told that within a few years you wouldnt recognize the place because of all of the new developement plans

That would be bad because the place still has the "old" baja charm.
But might be good for me because my property value at Pedregal would go up. If I cared about that sort of thing.
But there are many grand schemes for that area. And I'm sure that in about 100 years some might actually happen.
I met the owner a while back and he was a nice guy. Didn't strike me as the type to be intimidated. Young and serious go getter type.

About ten years ago, there was word of a developer who was going to build a huge resort on the point of the cape. The road there is absolutely horrid. :barf:How were the tourists supposed to get to the resort? Cool beach area though, and there is a small expatriate community just before you turn to get to the point. I would say about 100 American/Canadiens.
I would be concerned if I were the property owners of the houses across the water from The Old Mill:!::!::!::!::!::!::!::!:

Hola, i stayed at the old mill hotel for two nights at the end of october, 2009, and the old mill restaurant was being worked on very slowly and a couple of the locals told me they weren't sure what the new owner was going to do.

the restaurant at don eddies was very intermittently open and the little market around the corner was intermittently open as well. the old rv park across from the old mill restaurant was basically a vacant lot with all the structures demolished except for one occupied house.

i would recommend bringing your own provisions " just in case ".

in 2006, i stayed at cielito lindo and it was just a disaster. the outside public bathroom had broken windows covered with cardboard and as they use well water, the showers started out muddy looking. they are not very regular turning the generator on a.m. or p.m.

as i haven't been there since, i have also heard that gypsy's is closed.

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

pedro's panga's has moved a couple of blocks towards the mex1.
