Trying to plan in 10 trip in Baja

Hi,

My girlfriend and I would like to spent approx 10 days in Baja in Aug and are trying to decide on a place to visit. She will be in San Diego on business, so we were planing on crossing the boarder into TJ and then busing it somewhere with a decent beach and are looking for recommendations. We first considered San Felipe, but have gotten a lot of negative feedback about it (dirty beaches, water etc.). We then considered going to Bahia de LA, but it seems a bit difficult to get to without a car. We are not overly fussy people...just want to hang on a nice beach for a week, drink some beer and eat good mexican food. We don't want something super touristy and would like to spend $20-$50/night on accomodations max. Since we won't have car, (and fly back to Toronto from San Diego) we need someplace within a decent bus ride from SD/TJ (I'd say 6-8 hours max).

Any insights as to towns, specific beaches and accomodations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Dan

You could consider the Cielita Linda hotel and restaurant just south of San Quinton. It could be cleaner and newer but many stay there with no regrets. The restaurant has a bar and the beach is a close walk.

Hopefully, someone will come up with a better answer.
I'm not good on the hotel scene....

Punta Banda -- 3 hrs from San Diego. Rent a house on the beach and ENJOY. But do so QUICKLY as August gets busy here. Temp is constant 70-75 although today I think we got up to 78, but then it was 93 in Ensenada. If you want tips on how to rent a house here, U2U me (or email) and I'll give you the info. Will need to know your budget as well. We've got 7 miles of unspoiled beach to walk upon and are right on the bay. Gentle waves, shallow waters, lagoon on the opposite side. Fantastico.

San Felipe will be CHEAP as there is no one there - TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER. Well over 100 degrees daily! Don't be lured by cheap rates. You'll be miserable.

PS - the Cielito Lindo mentioned above has recently been trashed (not literally but in reviews) by many members of this board; plus it's too far for you to go. For a week's stay you want to rent a house so you can have breakfast when you want (fresh squeezed OJ!) and relax on your own patio on the beach.

If you're into hotels you might try the Estero Beach Hotel - very bus rideable (is that a word) and here's the website:

it ain't cheap!

If you don't want to be right on the beach but within walking distance; you can do pretty well on a one week rental.
