BOLA panoramas

Skipjack Joe - 7-15-2006 at 10:06 PM

As many who have visited this place, BOLA is a place of great beauty. The best it has to offer, in my opinion, happens in the evening. The light show starts about, say, 6:45 and ends about 8. There is a wonderful spot to spend the evening enjoying it that I would recommend. There is a 'microcondas' tower on the left side of the road about 2 miles as you approach town. Just pull off the road and walk to the edge and sit back and enjoy. It's a wonderful way to spend an evening.

The shadows slowly move from the mountains behind you eastward towards the shoreline. The place takes on a glorious quality as the shadows reach the shoreline, leaving the islands aglow.

About 10 minutes later you look to the left and see La Gringa.

Maybe 20 minutes later the shadows have reached all of the islands except Isla La Guardia. The place takes on a magical quality.

Jerry, Ken, Natalie, and pangamadness,

Thank you for the kind words. They do encourage me to keep shooting. I intended to shoot a lot more this summer but the heat was so intense it just sapped all my energy. There are some really great spots between El Rosario and Catavina I hope to shoot some day. That area comes alive in the evening light.

I'm glad to see you back online.

I went to your old stomping grounds, La Gringa. That place really was the most beautiful of the entire bay area in my opinion. I can see also why you would choose it. The best fishing was up around Isla Smith and La Gringa is about as close as you can camp to that island.

I explored La Gringa a bit on foot. I think I even saw a bonefish in the shallows. The water was so clear up against that spit of land people were camped on. And that small lagoon behind us was amazing. The bottom consisted of these maroon colored rocks that looked like jewels under the water. I was told you could gather butter clams in the lagoon but it looked to be pretty cleaned out. A truly amazing place. Thanks for telling me about it.

Regarding a trip report. I didn't write one because by the time I write it conditions have changed and it's no help to anyone. We were there during the 6/15-6/22 timeframe.

----Many years ago upon my first visit to BOLA, I pulled out onto that bluff you took your shots from---------I was thunderstruck-------all that I had heard about BOLA was so inadaquate to really prepare me for that "sight"-----it was just about the time of day you took your pics, and I agree with you, it is just incredible.

Thank you so much for these fine traditional shots that bring back so many good memories, and we also spent dozens of days and nights on the shores of La Gringa----the best of times.
