"Our Place" Deli in Esteban Cantu

bajamigo - 7-17-2006 at 07:56 PM

If you're ever on the road to La Bufadora and you get the munchies, stop in at Our Place deli in Pob. Esteban Cantu. I have no financial interest in the place; it's run by two local ladies and is open from 9:00am to 5:00 pm, Monday thru Saturday.

They make great pastrami, roast beef, turkey and other sandwiches that are generous in size and taste. Each day features a different freshly-made soup. I hear the Friday clam chowder (made with fresh clams) is wonderful, but my personal favorite is the split pea soup: great taste and texture, and not salty. Just simple fare.

Prices are modest but well worth it. Drinks are nonalcoholic (a great idea if you're heading out to La Bufadora) and include iced tea and fresh lemonade.

Seating is mostly outdoors.

Shop is on the right, next door to the Fruteria, about 30 meters past the speed bump.

I'm heading down this weekend to my place at camp La Jolla and will try out the new restaurant.

I understand they didn't last a month.

A friend who lives in the area, originally from NYC told a funny story:

He and 3 friends, thrilled at the opportunity to eat deli were among the first customers. They all ordered corned beef sandwiches. He said, " I knew we were in trouble when the waitress asked if we wanted them with lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise."

David K - 10-16-2006 at 09:02 PM

Yah, I know how you cringe when I have one of youe great pastrami sandwiches with mayonnaise and no mustard!

Keep up the good work Dave!

DENNIS - 10-17-2006 at 08:24 AM

Yeah, they're history. Next door neighbor at the Fruteria said the 300 dollars rent each month was what did them in.
One of the owners in that venture has opened and closed more restaurants in the area than I can remember. She should work for the health department.

Make that:

"for the next month"

DENNIS - 10-17-2006 at 11:02 AM

Actually, thinking back, I think the rent was 2000 Ps.

Hey, Dave.......

........are you able to get Boar's Head meats down there at your place, or something equivalent?

I'm certainly not an expert, although I did work in a Jewish deli in high school, but the places that use Boar's Head meats around here seem to have the best sandwiches. They're also the best meats I can get at the grocery store.

All this talk has be wanting a pastrami on corn rye..........WITH MUSTARD, OF COURSE.

I doubt that a Jewish deli would use anything labeled Boar's Head. ;D They do have a quality product, though.

At the deli we use Vienna corned beef and pastrami (when we can't pickle our own). It has an authentic Jewish taste. The difference is the amount of garlic used for pickling.

Must be some overlap from the torta traditions........

Well, all that talk about it yesterday got me motivated for one......no, I didn't drive down from The OC to Dave's in Rosarito. My wife has been trying to get me to try a pastrami sandwich from a chain called The Hat. So she drove one over and we ate it in the back of the Lance for lunch.

Not impressed. Pretty fatty, pickle chips already in the sammy and yellow mustard already on it, too. Couldn't even tell if the pickles were true dill pickles or some kind of hamburger pickle. I also prefer deli style mustard. Size was pretty good, especially for a 6.95 sammy.

It's a good thing because we aren't open on Wednesdays.

But the meat has to have at least some fat. It should be brisket, not top round. The bread should be corn rye... and you're right, not yellow mustard. We use Gulden's.

Dave ----
Im probably the only one here who doesn't know but, do you have the N.Y. Deli I see advertised in Rosarito Bch?

that would be Dave's N.Y. Deli I understand it is the best west of N.Y.C. but I can never find it. I get so confused along that stretch of Highway with the exits the way they are. but one day I will hit it right and it will be on a Wednesday:lol:

Ah Dave,

You make my mouth water !

Did you ever make it to Braverman's in Chicago when they were still open ?
It was huge and famous for their gut-bomb latkes and customer abuse !
"I'm going broke here while you make up your mind !!"
"You gonna eat or just look ?"

Sounds alot like the Cantor's "lady" in the new Carl's Jr. commercials for their pastrami burger.

I havent had one.....it just sounds SO over the top. Probably tastes good, though.
