Patty's Place - Punta Banda

bajabound2005 - 7-22-2006 at 10:15 PM

Let's leave it at this, not inclined to go back. Decent prices, less than average food, no service. Eat somewhere else. Oh, we went for breakfast; had chilaquiles and he had chile colorado omelet. Best thing? The potatoes served with both.

thebajarunner - 7-22-2006 at 10:35 PM

Thanks for being honest.
Some on this board believe that all reviews must be positive,
but, it only works when we tell it like it is.
Knowing the ones to avoid is just as important as knowing the ones to seek out.

Paulina - 7-23-2006 at 11:15 AM

One doesn't go to Patty's Place for the food, but for the atmosphere. I've been a frequent customer of Patty's for about 15 years, back when she first opened her 'stand' on the side of the road, as you drove towards Campo La Jolla.
When Sr. Pabloff decided to 'clean up' so to speak, he offered Patty the space she has now.

She offers simple fare, nothing fancy, but it serves the purpose of the locals that live there. The Liar's Club meets every morning for a watery cup of coffee and to tell stories, bicker, pick on each other, give each other chiiit about the day, etc. If you're heading south on a road trip you can pick up a quick cup of coffee as well as breakfast burritos to get your drive started. There is ususally only one gal working behind the counter, so it's not the service one would expect State side, but they do their best to take care of their customers.
You can find old articles written by Fred Hoctor hanging on the walls, pictures drawn by local artists, magazines and newspapers donated for something to read while you start the day.
I consider Patty and her husband Martin our friends and in my opinion, Patty's Place serves the purpose it was meant to be. A local hang out and quick food for when you need it.

Yes, there was some great artwork on the walls. Never heard of the Liar's Club - tell us more! Someone who ate there once thought the food was great so we went there...we were disappointed but perhaps our expections had been set to high. We'll try it again.

The food at Paty's (that's what her sign says) is at best OK. The problem is that with more people pouring into the area, more restaurants are opening, and the food they serve is of higher and higher quality.

bajabum - 8-1-2006 at 11:48 AM

I didnt think the Liars Club was still functioning! I remember back when it was Johnnys Place and the original cast met every morning for their liars club mtg...Rudy, Dick, Carson, etc. Quite a mix of characters. I think Patty makes a pretty decent cheese burger and does a good job on the fish tacos too! Try Celias down by the blow hole if you want a little more upscale experience.

On the infrequent occasions I get out there, I'm partial to Gordo's, for the funk factor if nothing else.

bajabound2005 - 8-1-2006 at 09:36 PM

Gordo's was closed earlier this month...well last month now that it's August as Chuy, who I think is the owner had surgery. He's out of sorts for another few weeks so I don't even if Gordo's is open right now. The annual chili cookoff scheduled for 8/19 has been indefinitely postponed until he's back on his feet so to speak...

Patys Place / Liars Club update

Patys has never, to my knowledge, been known for its food other than the fact that it is only that --- food. The best part of Patys is the early start time, 6:30 AM. That's a good thing for old folks like me who go to bed with the chickens.
The Liars Club , just a group of regulars sitting around telling lies to each other, still exists. How could it not? That's what old people do when they're bored. Anyway, the format is the same, even a few of the faces. Rudy is still in town although not getting around as he used to. He's being cared for better than he used to care for himself.
Carson is living in Minnisota. Has been for a few years. Just got a letter and photos from him last week. Still looks the same even though he will be 75 in October. He'll be dropping in one of these days, no doubt.

As for Los Gordos bar and restaurant, Chuy is still AWOL, staying in Chula Vista recovering or waiting to recover or whatever. Chula Vista is 120 miles north and by the time a story passes through that much Baja, it is twisted and bent beyond recognition. If I hear anything reliable, I'll pass it on.

Later .... Dennis

bajabound2005 - 9-4-2006 at 05:55 PM

Thanks, Dennis! We know a lot of people that miss Gordo's and Chuy...hope he gets back here soon.

DENNIS - 9-4-2006 at 06:36 PM

Hey bajabound ---
You're welcome. I'll make a strong effort to find out whats up with Chuy and let you know ASAP.
Anyway, this gives me an chance to explain my last post. I really dont go to bed with chickens. In a small community, such as we live in, rumors and gossip grow and travel fast and I can do without a reputation of being intimate with chickens or any other fowl for that matter.
Just thought I'd clarify.

Later .... Dennis

Too late

Just got a phone call. Said you have twelve bastard chicken children.

DENNIS - 9-4-2006 at 07:32 PM

Vegas, or Provo? ;D

The Rhode Island Red was a dead giveaway.

Vegas, to be sure. She's a Pentacostal Pullet and very proper at that. She wouldn't think of doing anything out of the ordinary, nor would I.

Oh no. I think the ejido chicken police are coming up the driveway. I'd better hide all these Col. Sanders buckets or I'll be in real trouble. Probably first degree cannibalism, at least. I seem to have run a-fowl of the law.
A-fowl ..... get it? That's a joke. Ha ha ha ha ha. Sometimes I just crack myself up. Oh wow, there's another one .... crack. You know, like an egg that you crack to open when .......... never mind. It's time for my meds.

AmoPescar - 9-4-2006 at 09:25 PM

Dennis...you had me believing you were a chicken molester!!! LOL

Glad you explained yourself. You really had me wondering about your choice of a lifestyle, I thought it was kind of EGGcentric!!

I hope you know I was just YOLKING with you...and that I didn't put you in a FOWL mood.

Dennis,
Check your U2U.

DENNIS - 9-5-2006 at 12:37 PM

Paulina
Thanks. I replied U2U

Do we have to give notice of having sent U2U or does the process alert the receiver that there is a private message?

Paulina - 9-5-2006 at 02:28 PM

Dennis,
In the upper right hand corner of your screen, you will be notified of a U2U in blue just abover your logged in status.
Got your reply, thanks!

I've been to Celias on only a few occasions and believe me this cannott be "upscale" to anything! I don't think they wash their silver wear. Eveytime I have had to ask for a "clean" fork! As for the food, you have got to be kidding.....Terrible. Have you tried the Sunday brunch. AWFUL! Never again...............

DENNIS - 10-31-2006 at 11:24 AM

Those of you who knew Carson, I'm sad to say, he is no longer with us.

He died Oct. 12.

DENNIS - 10-31-2006 at 11:27 AM

Lips --
By the way, I think your review of Celias is too generous. I couldn't get drunk enough to eat there.

bajaguy - 10-31-2006 at 12:52 PM

Dennis......if you buy the Pacifico's, I'll try and get drunk enough....PS: why are their feathers all over your car???

Lips...my old pal......bring your own eating utensils....just like they taught you in the military

DENNIS - 10-31-2006 at 02:47 PM

on celia's reviews. apart what has been said, the service was lousy too. went back a few times because the view outside was breathtaking. but it's not worth it.
