BajaNomad

We can't be in Baja, but there MAY be some things better.

vgabndo - 7-23-2006 at 02:26 PM

I can't choose whether it is my cherry crop, or the raspberries.

The cherries are all organic, no spray, no worms, and irrigated exclusively with Dannon water!

vgabndo - 7-23-2006 at 02:29 PM

We picked for parts of several days on one tree before getting on a ladder. What a wonderful summer in Northern California. We'll have lots of frozen treats for Baja in the fall.

Well the pitayhas are our crop de jour....
You know the cactus fruit that the indios ate and ate again.

They just had the Pitayha festival in Miraflores. Didnt make it this year but a friend is bringing me some pitayha marmelada. Terry at Ignacio Springs B&B makes a good one too.

Bodacious Berries

Ditto here.

Best crop of raspberries in our little patch I've seen in years. Also great blueberries already ripe in the valley. Blackberries will be awesome if the rains don't return soon.

------

Judy, can you tell us some of the ways they prepare and serve the sweet fruit? Thanks.

Boy oh boy

Gypsy Jan - 7-23-2006 at 03:41 PM

I do miss fresh boysenberries, blueberries, rasberries and Rainer cherries.

Oh well, I guess I just have to put up with blue skies, fair winds and waves.

Yeah Sharks...

vgabndo - 7-23-2006 at 04:15 PM

I've never seen so many green blackberries. Our chances of rain will be less than yours, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Do you buy it by the litre or have it trucked in?

Paula - 7-23-2006 at 08:53 PM

We have some old raspberry plants up here in Montana. If I knew how to post a photo I could let you all laugh at the look of our berries. They are small and lumpy, but they taste better than any others I've eaten.

The Flathead cherries are beautiful this year, as are the rainiers grown up here. I buy them in Arlee from a family from Michoacan when I drive to Missoula. They have an old fridge in their yard, and sell them fresh picked, washed and chilled, and always include napkins and a bag for the pits. Four summers back they spoke no English, and now the teenagers speak perfectly.

But someday I'm gonna spend the whole summer in Loreto, just to taste the pithaya.

Good question! I was wondering too.... or is it a joke?:?::o:biggrin:

bajabound2005 - 7-23-2006 at 09:00 PM

Paula, we LOVE those Flathead cherries! They are the best cherries in the world. I've spent many years in Montana. My folks were born there (Anaconda), my sister is still there and many relatives. But it's even hot THERE this summer!!! That's where we USED to go to get out of the heat of Sacramento!

Paula - 7-23-2006 at 09:20 PM

Right you are, Bajabound it is HOT here! And poor us with no AC because we never need it! Cool nights? Not this summer...

Mexitron - 7-23-2006 at 10:48 PM

The Thimbleberries were excellent this year on the southern Oregon Coast and the Blackberries are just starting--gonna be a bumper crop!

Sharksbaja - 7-23-2006 at 11:39 PM

Actually we also flush our toilets with Dannon water.

vgabndo - 7-24-2006 at 08:06 AM

As with all the small towns in South Siskiyou County, we have sold our soul to a big corporation. (McCloud is still fighting with Nestle.) In the case of Mt. Shasta City it was Coca Cola (Dannon Water). They pull the water for their plastic bottles from the same source as our un-metered, un-treated, City water. Dannon put in a couple of wells, ours still comes from the spring most of the year.

Many in the area are fighting a move to publicize the fact that our City water has been judged the best in the state.

It is also so cold coming from the tap that it hurts your teeth!

bajabound2005 - 7-24-2006 at 08:19 AM

Sharksbaja, I don't know what you call it but it looks like what we call golden raspberries.

DON'T DO IT!!! Your town will explode! Instead, talk about crime and cost of living there. The town will grow slower.

Bajabound.. we call these wild berries Salmonberries. Some are delicious while others are to sour to eat. Even when ripe.

bajapablo - 7-24-2006 at 01:49 PM

Couldn't make it to baja but we just returned from sequim and birch bay area of Washington. The fresh shrimp, crab, and rasberries were the bomb!

u-pick rasberries

sorry peta but we had to eat her.

bajapablo - 7-24-2006 at 02:18 PM

Big mistake of letting my kids play (and therefore bond) with the crab before we threw it in the pot

dinner time

bajapablo - 7-24-2006 at 02:25 PM

Sharks...

vgabndo - 7-24-2006 at 02:55 PM

I'm afraid we are no longer a secret. The downturn in Real Estate has made some difference this year though.

We throw a July 4th. party here that more than doubles the population of the little village. I've seen it snow on the parade, but most people leave with their little pockets full of real estate flyers!!!

Go to the link below, and pull up the "movie" for yesterday.
With this on the www, our goose is cooked.

http://www.snowcrest.net/camera/ BE SURE TO USE THE BROADBAND CONNECTION...MUCH BETTER

I think we'll be back in your neighborhood for the Sitka Art Center invitational show. Oct.?

Beautiful crabs, and what a beautiful family.

I don't know... They don't look too broken up about it.

thanks vgabndo!

bajapablo - 7-24-2006 at 03:51 PM

I didn't take any picture of the steamed clams we had but they were probably the best of all!

bajapablo - 7-24-2006 at 03:54 PM

Picture taken while still alive. It was still fun and games. The crying came about 2 minutes after the picture. These kids are funny. We go to the pet store to buy a pinky mouse for their snake. They bond with it on the way home and then cry and go into their bedrooms while dad throws it in the snake cage:D

Heather - 7-25-2006 at 08:43 AM

Have not seen any berries down here, but it sure is mango season in Cabo. We went to a U-pick mango orchard in San Jose yesterday. Filled up about 3 or 4 big buckets with the big mangoes (they call them manzana or apple mangoes). Gave the guy and his dog 100 pesos for the chance to roam free in the orchard and do some picking and eating... probably like those rasperries the kids had in the photos. I took some pics. of my kids, too, but do not know how to attach them on this computer. Heck I am still trying to do an apostrophe! Saludos, Heather
