comitan - 8-10-2006 at 03:19 PM

If that was a joke, Comitan, it was great. If it wasn't a joke, it's even funnier.

BajaNomad - 8-10-2006 at 06:29 PM

There is an option in the forum software for a spell check, but it requires having to load a plug-in that's not currently on the server - which I've chosen not to do up to this point.

A lot of people like using the Google Toolbar, which also includes a spell-check for online forms.

;D

bajalou - 8-10-2006 at 06:32 PM

Firefox with Google toolbar - maybe next year I'll remember to use it.

To spell or not to spill

Baja Bernie - 8-10-2006 at 09:20 PM

I have a very good spellchecker and I occasionally disagree with her. Remember, I once got a very nice T'shirt just because I invented a new word on this forum---the word, you figure it out--"Constributer." She was asleep that night--if I remember correctly

I rather prefer those free thinking folks who add so much to the livity of this forum with their wonderful posts.

Bruce can get more laughs with three, or is it five, misspelled words than most of the so-called wordsmiths who post here will ever get. And laughter is blessed by the gods of livity.

I thought I was your spell checker!

I don't see any misspelled words in Bruce's sentence. One word is used improperly but it is a word with the same pronunciation. (Google spell check did not find any errors)

"Their" is not spelled correctly

All though I'm won of the better spellers on this bored, I think its a miss take four us too put sew much emphasis on spelling. After awl, the words--knot the ordure in witch they're letters a pier--our whats reely important. Eye don't ever advice pea pull two use Spell Chex, which is likely two put a damp purr awn they're creativity.

Sew there!

[Hay Bruice Leach, this is allot of fun too dew!]

toneart - 8-16-2006 at 09:27 PM

Those who cronically misspell and/or use improper grammar don't seem to know when they are doing it. It isn't necessarily a reflection of one's intelligence. It may be lack of education or perhaps a learning disability.

I personally find value in content and try to overlook style. It does get to me sometimes and I want to throttle them, but the time to correct is when they are young. We can continue learning many things at any age but I don't believe spelling is one of them. Also, where is the motivation? Apparently it isn't ridicule nor shame.

So.....keep posting, my friends. Try your best but don't let your spelling hang you up. I will either step in it or go around. I appreciate the effort and what you have to say, and most of all....your passion.

(aside):If spelling were a game and you swung and missed, it would be called a MIchit....really! Look it up.

FARASHA - 8-17-2006 at 02:05 PM

THANKS A LOT toneart !
I thank you for your post - its encouraging and gives comfort to people like me.
English isn't my native language, I'm checking, deleting, rewriting mails, posts, etc
Worrying (?) about grammar/spelling AND that peole might see this as an imperfection, that I'm stupid........
It kept me from communicating by mails, or joining a board like this for a loong time.
Nothing can be so insulting as an OVER critical voice, if it's done in private its okay, but not in public. And that can put peole off. And maybe they have something interesting to say?

AND THANKS to BRUCE !!
I love your posts, and those mistakes (you seem to do on purpose).
If not - still - they are FUN, they make me laugh, and feel easier about my own struggle.

ANYWAY - I have been told from a mentor " no one loves a perfectionist " just try to do your best.

AND also to bajalera - that was VERY funny your post - zeems to bea otha lanquage,, very challenging and also educative.

Love to ya'll Lotte

Spell Check Faux Pas

MrBillM - 8-17-2006 at 07:15 PM

The absolute best Spell Check failure I have ever seen occurred many years ago at GTE. The monthly newsletter passed out to all employees of GTE-Calif had a front-page story and photo of the Female employee who had just been promoted to: Director of Pubic Relations. Many of us inquired regarding becoming her assistant.

On another related (sort of) note: This a.m. the Boulder District Attorney gave an outdoor press briefing regarding the arrest in the Jon Benet Ramsey case. In discussing a conversation she had with John Ramsey, she said it was a Poig-nant moment. "Hooked on Phonics" led her astray, I guess. Nothing like embarrassing yourself in front of a few million people.

toneart - 8-17-2006 at 09:32 PM

Maybe y'all are way ahead of me but I just discovered a website that is a great reference-- dictionary, grammar, and much more: www.answers.com
scroll down to the bottom and click on your choice. The dictionary is in the "words" section. Have fun.

I think I missed something, Mr. B.
I, too, would characterize that as a poignant moment.
This from dictionary.com

poign?ant ( P ) Pronunciation Key (poinynt)
adj.

Physically painful: ?Keen, poignant agonies seemed to shoot from his neck downward? (Ambrose Bierce).
Keenly distressing to the mind or feelings: poignant anxiety.
Profoundly moving; touching: a poignant memory

Poignant Moments

MrBillM - 8-18-2006 at 09:05 AM

The D.A. Gal pronounced it as spelled i.e. "Poig-Nant" not "poinyant". It is a classic example of someone using a word (for effect) that they are not familiar with. I've heard those kind of mistakes many, many times over the years. It is usually a case of someone trying to appear erudite.

One other flagrant example I heard years ago was a politician using the word CHAOS as spelled i.e. "CHA-OS" rather than "Kay-os".

I have a native German friend who is very well-educated and one of many complaints he has about the English language is the number of words that cannot be sounded out according to strict rules of pronounciation. That is one of the strengths of the Spanish language. Except for a few variations, you know how a word is sounded out.

thebajarunner - 8-18-2006 at 01:07 PM

O.K.
I think I got it...

Something like being "slightly POIGnant"???

(the word, properly used, is a wonderful word. unfortunately, few people know the meaning and when you render it in an expressive sense you generally get blank looks.... on the other hand, mebbe I need to start hanging around with a better class of folks...hmmmmm)

Anonymous - 8-18-2006 at 01:13 PM

I'll confess to one of those dumb mispronouncing flubs. "Misled" is a word that appears quite often in newspapers, which I started reading when quite young, and although I never used it in talking, mentally it was "mizzled."

When well into my twenties I finally came to "mis-" hyphened at the end of a line of type, and a light dawned. I've always been sort of sorry about that--mizzled sounds a lot more fitting for the act the word describes.

Ooops!

...I'd go for the Canadian spell check version...e.g, labour, neighbour, colour, etc. then a nice automatic punctuation checker:

Eats shoots and leaves.

Eats, shoots and leaves.
