Well, this board has had little activity in the last couple weeks so how bout a mexican food recommendation north of the border.
There is a place in La Jolla called Mr. Taco that is really a great deal (especially for this posh resort town) and has good food. It's located on
Ivanhoe, about a block up from Prospect.
The most expensive things on the menu (carne asada, carnitas, many other "bulk" meats with all the trimmings) are 6.95 as well as the top end Mexican
combos.
But the best deal had to be the Mexican style shrimp c-cktails. You get about 10-12 medianos in a 12 oz plastic cup that also has chunks of avo. Chips
and nice juicy limes on the side. Also includes access to a basic salsa bar and they have their own habanero style salsa that comes in a squirt bottle
like ketchup. It's only moderately hot but very good. 5.95 for the c-cktail.
Serves beer and margaritas, but I suspect they are wine maggies. Did not actually have one.

I would appreciate your opinions, if you go.
It's the type of restaurant where you walk up to the counter and order and then the food is brought out to you, so dont mistake it for a traditional
sit-down establishment. But the decor, the furnishings and the cleanliness are above most of the mexican counter-order places I frequent in The OC.
Even a couple outside tables on the sidewalk.
We walked by Alphonso's which is on Prospect, pretty close to the Top of the Cove and George's, etc. Very busy. But the prices were typical La Jolla
prices.....mexican combos for 12.95 AT LUNCH. We passed, and tried Mr. Taco instead.

Not on Prospect or Girard, but Wahoo's Fish Taco and El Pescador, both next to Mitch's Surf Shop on Pearl Street are family fav's. We spend more time
at Wahoo's these days.

Wahoo makes the best fish taco this side of the border. Healthy portions, good prices. Parking is a challenge.

Totally disagree. Maybe they're better in San Diego, but not in L.A. Something South American or Asian about the flavor that I just don't care for.
If you're going with a chain, I prefer La Salsa or Rubio's for grilled, Senor Fish for fried. But nothing holds a candle to the stand in Ensenada
next to the hardware store (the name always escapes me, but it's the one where they hand out little tickets).

I guess it is okay if I put in a pitch for the 'Dorado' Taco Shop in thriving downtown Santee. Parking is not a problem and their fish tacos are
flown in fresh from the Capital of Fish Tacos---San Felipe.
Slightly wilted, but tasty non the less.

San Felipe, the Capital of Fish Tacos? That is a matter of some dispute. The Pacific side story is that the fried fish taco was invented in Ensenada
by people who learned the cooking technique from Japanese fisherman, who had been brought in to help establish Ensenada's fledgling fishery in the
early 1900s.
How do they recover the cost of flying tacos in from SF? Sounds a little fishy to me.

We ate dinner last night at Mr. Taco.
The shrimp c-cktail was great.
The chicken taco was great.
The carnitas taco was great.
The carne asada tacao was great.
The fish taco was great.
The beer was cold.
We will be going back to try some other stuff. (hey it's almost lunch time!)
As we were just finishing our food last night a HUGE plate of sizzling steak fajitas was delivered to the table next to us. Lots of meat, peppers and
stuff. It was enough for two mortals.

Lunch today I was going to try the chile relleno but I instead ordered another shrimp c-cktail (wanted to be sure yeterday wasn't a fluke) to go with
my Sonora Style Steak Fajitas for $ 9.95. The meat was flavorful and sizzling and the plate came with rice,beans,pico de gallo,guacamole and
tortillas. I made one very large burro with a flour tortilla and brought the rest home to my lovely wife who is enjoying the rest of it as I write.
Mr. Taco has good,quality food at a fair price and a good spot to stop at on your to or from the beach/post office/bank/shopping or..................

Glad you were able to sample such a variety in such a short time. We weren't that hungry when we were there so we only ordered a bean tostada, a
cheese quesadilla and the c-cktel. The quesadilla was actually a little light on queso. At least it was made with a burrito sized tortilla. But the
2.95 bean tostada was very good; comes with guacamole and sour cream which is not common on a 2.95 tostada. Will try the tacos next time down.
We saw quite a few fajitas plates being served while we were there. It must be their best seller. Looked like a great deal for 9.95.
What did you think of the salsa that arrived in the ketchup bottle? Had an orange tint, made me think it was habanero based.
Viva Senor Taco!!!! I'm wondering if they're open for desayuno and how their huevos rancheros are?????
