Not too many flat areas in Baja.
There was no town of Vizcaino in 1966, and Guerrero Negro was NOT on the main transpeninsular route then...
I don't recall that many houses at Rancho San Agustin, but that is another flat area...

Neal, please be more specific... I was in San Felipe in 1966 and it was a lot more than that photo shows (shops, motels, gas stations)... Plus you
will have either mountains or sea in the background of a photo around San Felipe...

San Felipe 66

My first trip to San Felipe was Thanksgiving Holiday 1966 to ride dirt bikes and drink Cerveza . Although small by today's standards, it was still a
pretty substantial town with a lot of shops, bars, restaurants and houses.
A friend of mine has a bunch of 8mm (not Super 8) film reels of San Felipe taken in 1957 that he "inherited" when an old neighbor of ours died in YV.
I've seen them a couple of times, but with no narration, it is almost impossible to relate them to what we knew of the town starting in 1966, but it's
clear that even then there was quite a bit there. Unfortunately, we can't ask the photographer and I'm not anxious for the day that I can.
Also in 1957-58, my Dad took a fishing trip to San Felipe and came back with a Totouva longer than the Width of our 57 Chevy wagon. He never had much
to say about the town itself.

-----with my aunt---I was 12 years old. I was just looking at some old slides of that trip, and it reveals that there were no paved streets, that the
town really did not go back from the water (as a town) for more than about 3 blocks, and I remember that we camped behind (just west of) a huge
barrier dune just south of "town", and we were within easy walking distance of downtown-----maybe 1/2 mile at most south of the flood lagoon. It was
every bit the sleepy little fishing village.
Where Marian must have made the "pic" was probably somewhere just west of the main downtown area, but I am just guessing. I do remember that the
approach to town was thru some pretty desolate country, which looked very much like what is in Marian Johns picture.

In 1966... the paved road came into town and ended at the main north/south business street... which was dirt. A gas station was at the northwest
corner... Arnold's Del Mar Motel and cafe was the place to go... down where Rockadile's is now.
After the 1967 chubasco, the main business street was paved following the rebuilding of the town.

In the early 50's the jail was a old black panel truck about where the red lobster is now , there was no a/c and no toilet grin

HUM, All I could come up with was gravesite of the 'WIW' prior to herself.
