San Nicolas

vgabndo - 9-4-2006 at 03:17 PM

A lot of the gringos who are part of the San Nicolas community have been communicating among ourselves, but there is still zero information about the whole village.

Is there any possibility that some adventurous soul from the Bahia could try to get out there and see how bad it is.

Because of all the side arroyos I may be dreaming, but that would also mean that everyone who stayed out there is cut off.

Most of the locals call Loreto "going to town" and it seems that way may be cut off too.

As many of you know, that whole village (with very few exceptions) is in the arroyo. When Marty brought Mulege 5' we got a foot. If this was four times worse.........

I've been trying to be patient, but my last query got 127 viewings no no responses. I have to try again. There are a bunch of us with places there, and no one has been able to learn anything since the rain came.

In Loreto is there anyone who knows Manuel Espino, or his brother in law Phillipe the Green Angel, or Jesus Baustida or his brother Terry, or Terry's son Culberto, or anyone at the Rico Pollo. Any of these folks should know what happened at San Nicolas, if anyone does. (18 km East of the highway, almost exactly half way between Mulege and Loreto)

If they were able, someone should have been able to make it to Loreto in a panga by now. It is easy to believe that they will be cut off from the highway for a long time.

We also haven't heard anything of our friends in San Sebastian. Things could be really rough out there. I hope the helicopters have checked in with them.

I hope a lot of things. Right now I hope someone can take a little time and try to get a report on them to the "outside world". It is too damned easy to imagine a lot of misery for people we've come to dearly love. Thanks in advance for anything anyone can do to let us know.

Hang in there Vag.
Those good People in San Nichalos are the "Survivor" type of People!!
It is surely a terrible feeling to be sitting here in Texas, unable to fly in to Help Them, as you are in Mt. Shasta!
Landed on that little Strip up on the Mesa so many times in Years Past.My Heart and Prayers are with them All!!
If Chewy was in Loreto, he may be on his way at this Moment.

GOOD NEWS

vgabndo - 9-6-2006 at 03:47 PM

I heard third hand this afternoon from Terry that everyone in the village is OK. The damage does not appear to be much worse than from Hurrican Marty. The road to the playa that crosses in front of Chico's is gone again and everyone is using the back road up by Manuel's then through his huerta.

No reports of serious damage. Terry was able to drive out.

Not much more than that at the moment, but what a relief!

I monitored the infrared satellite photos all during John's passing, and repeatedly said to myself, I can't believe the clouds have parted over San Nicolas AGAIN. It must have been true. With 8 inches of rain it was kinda bad, had they received 20 inches, it would have been aweful.

So sorry for the guys at San Sebastian.

Thanks to all for your concern, Perry and Cathy

Pangamadness:

Since the last posting, have heard third hand from Chuey that there is only six meters of the "mini-mesa" in front of the Conusupo, and the road passes in front of Kenny's around behind Chico's and between the Wardo's and Nelson and Jaine's since that fill they put across the new estuary a couple of years ago is (predictably) gone.

Chuey reports no significant damage to anybody's place, and Robert and Consuela would have gotten it if had happened.

Associated story...My partner has backed out of our deal because of time, money, health, distance etc. and we are looking for some other old hippie to share the rent. Does anyone come to mind?

great news!
