Long after John passed through the peninsula, it seems that spin-off effects have been messing with people in isolated places. Thursday morning, Yuma
got 4/10ths of an inch of rain but a couple hours south was a different story.
Only a few days after the big Labor Day "San Luis en La Playa" celebrations at El Golfo de Sta. Clara, Sonora, downpours flooded many homes and
businesses, washed out the road and cut communications for 12 hours. The arroyo on the eastern side of the little town had a flashflood through the
neighborhood around the cemetary and left about 50 families homeless. These were "casas de carton" dwellers. The structures carried away weren't
much to speak of, but they were all many people had. Now many have nothing but the clothes on their backs. A large number of pangas are buried in
the sand and many fishermen's trucks, that they use to haul the pangas onto the beach, are full of sand and may be ruined.
I know many of you are tapped out already with efforts to help people in Mulege and other parts of Baja, but...
My neighbor is down there today (he builds houses there) and I should get a more complete report tonight. I'm not looking to collect any money
personally, but when I know who is doing what in the way of relief efforts, I'll pass on the info. The last time I was involved with something like
this just across the border in SLRC, the "official" government relief agency's performance was dissapointing.
