Can an American citizen take an air rifle across the border? Has anyone legally done this? I cannot find an answer to that question! Maybe someone here knows....

DENNIS - 9-11-2006 at 08:57 PM

God only knows what the law is but, Cabelas sells a pellet gun that goes 1200 feet per second. Dont know how far it does that but it's 22 caliber and about 400 bucks. anyway, if it's legal, and I believe it is, thats pretty good fire power. Oh yeah, it's a rifle .... not a pistol.

Interested? go to cabelas.com

Oh yeah ..... I have seen pellet guns for sale at Gigante also but, it was a while ago.

Later .... Dennis

 There are air rifles available to buy at stores in Baja but I didn't think much of them. As far as taking one across the border its supposed to be legal but I was advised not to because by the time they found out it was just an air rifle I would be handcuffed in the back of a car. If I were going to try it I would leave it in the trunk of the car, walk across and tell them what you wanted to do and if they didn't have a problem call back to your partner and tell them to come ahead.

QuePasaBaja - 9-12-2006 at 02:38 PM

Believe it or not, you may want to consider a good paint ball gun. I have seen them that can move the paintball at more than 1800 feet per second.

( .38 Special +P loading fires a 125-grain bullet at 945 ft/s for a muzzle energy of 248 ft·lbf. A standard-pressure .38 Special only makes 850 ft/s for 201 ft·lbf of muzzle energy )

they are legal to bring into Mexico, and they are also sold here. There is a paint ball place in Tijuana.

QuePasaBaja has got this gun stuff figured-out. Unless the arresting officer has other ideas about it?

DENNIS - 9-12-2006 at 03:02 PM

Good idea and info on the paint ball gun. Im going on-line and read the adds for them. I'm looking for one with claims that it will penetrate a mans chest. What color would be appropriate for that?

Timbercrete - 9-12-2006 at 03:04 PM

Are you sure a paintball gun can have a muzzle velocity 1800 fpc? I sell them and most are just under 300 fps. If so, please forward the makers name.

DENNIS - 9-12-2006 at 03:10 PM

300 fps? That would just make a mess of the nice mans shirt. So much for that ........ Im going back to lead.

bajarich - 9-12-2006 at 08:31 PM

Paintballs hurt. I got shot by one in a drive-by shooting while working on my car. I had a jacket on and it still left a big welt. The perps were hauled into court because on assault charges they hit a kid in the face and injured his eye, so you definitely can do some damage with one.

Bajamatic - 9-12-2006 at 08:39 PM

That would be one hell of a BBQ quail peresentation - I think purple might look nice on the grill.

capn.sharky - 9-16-2006 at 04:24 PM

I took a chance and put an air pistol in my bag for the airline to take to Loreto. I got caught at LAX---but they didn't make a big deal of it. Just told me to let them know the next time. When I got to Loreto, they checked my bag and found it and said it was not a problem.

DENNIS - 9-16-2006 at 05:28 PM

Jeezo Capn. ---- What possessed you to take that gamble? Or, were you confident of the outcome?

DENNIS - 9-16-2006 at 06:54 PM

Well, I dont know. What I think I know is that a gun of any type in an airport is going to draw attention and a gun in a mexican airport could open a big can of worms until it's all sorted out. It could be quite a while before the letter of the law is brought into play.

air guns

tehag - 9-16-2006 at 07:38 PM

If you are contemplating using an air rifle or pistol for personal protection, consider this; they lack shock power and will tend to really pee the target off. I have been shot with both and the result was exactly that.

DENNIS - 9-16-2006 at 07:58 PM

Personally, Im not planning to use one at all but, as I mentioned way above a few days ago, Cabelas has one advertised with a muzzle velocity of 1200 FPS. That would do a lot more damage than wet pants.
Actually, these guns can be pretty sophisticated, so it seems. They use them in the Olympics, I suppose for target shooting.

pargo - 9-16-2006 at 11:13 PM

Paintball guns shoot fast and hard no durty booty. But if you're thinking of using one for personal protection, ask around caus' last I heard the bad guys were still hurling lead and that makes your paintball gun look like a pea shooter. If you make it back from Nuevo Lareto with your paintball gun give us a holla, tell us how it went...okie dokie!!?

Cypress - 9-17-2006 at 05:31 AM

Taking a BB gun to a gunfight doesn't sound like a good idea.

Make sure and file off the sights!

Timbercrete - 9-17-2006 at 05:43 AM

Make sure and file off the sights.

So when the fellow you shoot it with, jams it up your "Back Side", it wont hurt as much. :o:o:o

capn.sharky - 9-17-2006 at 08:24 AM

"were you confident of the outcome?" Dennis--yes I was pretty sure of the outcome. What I didn't count on was the x-ray machine at LAX picking it up in my seabag. I had it sourrounded by metal objects. However, it was no big deal with them. Incidentally, to all concerned that I took it down for self protection, that never was a consideration. I just like to target shoot at the dogs that insist on using my fenced in yard for their bano. I shoot them in the as- to discourage them from coming on my lot. Hope that doesn't upset all the animal rights activists out there on the board. If I have to go to a gunfight, I will find an AK-47. If they take that to shove up anything I will probably be dead at the time.

As to the damage factor some of these guns can cause I believe many of you are way off base.

There are BB guns like your Red Ryder's that are good for just goofing off with little real threat to a person except the eye damage aspect, Christmas Story comes to mind.

Then there are Air Rifles. This can kill a person pretty easy. I am no expert, but as a youngster, I took all sorts of small game with my Sheridan Blue Streak and it would go through a squirrels head at a 100' feet (all the way through) and it was nothing really special compared to some of the high dollar ones available.

To a country boy like me it was awesome. A lot lighter than lugging around my .410 or .22 and cheaper too, these things were important to 9 year old.

Plus it was quiet and very accurate. Have the knock down of a .357 or .44mag? Heck no, but harmless? I think not!!!

If you pull a toy gun on someone with a real gun, there's a high probability that they will shoot you with the real gun. As far as shooting dogs etc. with a BB gun goes, they'll wise up. Have tried it! Teaches the dogs to be very sharp. :tumble:
