My son Steve left Santa Maria, CA last Sunday afternoon and arrived in La Paz on Wednesday aft. Says drivers who pay attention would have no problems
even in an RV--warnings have been put up to mark the dicey spots.
In Ensenada, he was told of three car-jackings [one at a booth on the toll road!] that had occurred during the time the chubasco was heading north.
Steve traveled the old dirt road between the border and La Paz three times as a kid, has made countless trips on the paved highway as an adult, and
has continued the Good-Samaritan spirit that prevailed in the good old days--recycles gallon milk jugs with potable water to give road crews and
thirsty fellow travelers in summer, stops for anyone stranded whether Gringo or Mexican, on our last trip north made U-turns twice to help people.
And he's certainly not a wimp. But when returning to LP this time he made no such stops. The old tradition has been rendered risky by highway thugs.
Looks like Baja has finally joined the Civilized World. How sad!
