Bear...

Sharksbaja - 9-17-2006 at 02:11 AM

I always end up stopping and/or staying occasionally in the Hollywood area.
The high number of cute little blondes in Humvees with logos on em, ahem,... always gets my attention:coolup:!

But those axles are never gonna get a real workout, heh?;D

That is certainly not pen is envy. Or is it! :bounce:

FARASHA - 9-17-2006 at 02:17 AM

;D tell you GUYS - as a grown up female, I would rather go straight for the HUMMER, and not waste a second glance at the "missing link".:lol:

Well put Farasha, most gals would have a clue. ;D

but still a waste of resources I think.

FARASHA - 9-17-2006 at 02:37 AM

 nah, we got a saying here around - why bother buying the whole cow - if you're just up for a glass of milk. :tumble:

Sharksbaja - 9-17-2006 at 03:09 AM

"most gals would not have a clue"

capt. mike - 9-17-2006 at 01:15 PM

"Hummer" compensation............

WTF??

i thot this was going to be about the current rates in some of the better ladies bars.....sheeeeesh......:saint::rolleyes::lol::lol::lol:

FARASHA - 9-18-2006 at 12:17 AM

capt. mike: now that is interesting what people are associating with HUMMER ??!!
Want to talk about it?

Would be worth on doing an research/test WHAT do you think of when you hear HUMMER!!
Thing is - HUMMER in german language means -LOBSTER - so a different association takes place there.
Thats why I did check out the post, to find out.
And had some fun.
BUT for an AMERICAN I wonder!

HEY, what comes to your mind Guys and Gals if you hear HUMMER :?:;D

FARASHA - 9-18-2006 at 09:21 AM

no wonder - this is a LATIN term, not really common in everydays language.

FARASHA - 9-18-2006 at 10:26 PM

I'M LOST LARRY; WHAT DO YOU MEAN? :saint::rolleyes::biggrin:

Oso - 9-19-2006 at 08:19 AM

Ever heard of "getting Hoovered in the parking lot"?

DanO - 9-19-2006 at 12:16 PM

Ordinarily I would have passed up this silliness, but the hummer-lobster connection was intriguing so I did a little research. As Farasha indicates, "hummer" is indeed the term for the Homarus gammarus, or European lobster, in Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Check this link.

http://www.gma.org/lobsters/allaboutlobsters/species.html

Hummer or lobster? Decisions, decisions . . . .

FARASHA - 9-20-2006 at 01:16 AM

I'm about to laugh my socks OFF !!!:bounce:
I just love it, to have this play on words, and how people are responding.
I missed some HUMOR last days on the board. And it feels good to be SILLY no matter what age we are, or what the situation is, makes LIFE bearable -isn't it??
And working in an hospital for ages - you need humor to get around the hardships of life.
Okay will now reply to some Questions.

LARRY - I was - :lol:playing inocent gal:saint:
and I'm just about getting to understand AMERICAN or NOMADS sense of Humor. I'm used to the rather dry and sarcastic/black British Humor, which is matching in many ways that kind of humor where i grew up.
And I like to use the smileys -they stand for my emotions, replacing the missing bodylanguage on this conversations - lack of any visual contact can lead to misunderstandings (as I can see here many times on the BNF).
THANK YOU very much, for complimenting my english, and it is indeed my second language. My native is Austrian-German.
BUT- for the last decades I used to read/speak/study/teach as much in english as in german ( beside other languages). So english turned almost into my first choice language - when I travelled/lived abroad. Until I could get into the local dialect/ language.
And I have no problem to be criticised or corrected if done in an constructive way - I appreciate to learn something new or different! (american and british english IS different I know).
And I'll be asking in future many of you guys/girls, to explain certain (for you OBVIOUS) terms or whatever.

KATE : GREAT to hear from you, and that you joined in this silly thread.Might see you soon, going to visit friends in C, in 2 weeks time. Could give you a call, before hopping on the bus. Will leave from Homebase next week, and move to Secondbase for a month. We could share a HUMMER/Lobster dinner somewhere in Town.
NOW - Question: I know what hoovering is - BUT is it what I think what you are meaning?? if done on a parking lot?? Couldn't open your LINK from my PC at work (certain LINKS are banned )-will have to do that at home.

DanO : How nice of you to do a research on the Hummer/Lobster, great link - will use it for classroom work when teaching diving. Seems you are (like me) a Fact Curator( I've been called this after doing an IQ test ONLINE -verry funny) Nice to meet you!!!

FARASHA - 9-20-2006 at 06:35 AM

HEHEHEHHEEHEHEH, really funny and silly, aren't we???
Yeah, that is/was confusing I guess.
No prob - WHAT can I do to make it clear -Pls??
Would be glad to
or U2U me Larry - don't want to bore others on the thread

[Edited on 20-9-2006 by FARASHA]

FARASHA - 9-20-2006 at 06:41 AM

AND ...what is flummoxed? need to get more of local grammar ...:?: thx

FARASHA - 9-20-2006 at 07:11 AM

KATE - just did, and replyed.

hoovered in the parking lot

Tomas Tierra - 9-20-2006 at 09:36 AM

I thought that's when your buddy got out of the water first and smoked all the after surf p-ot

DanO - 9-20-2006 at 10:29 AM

That would be bogarting, dude. Not that I would know anything about it.

Farasha, to flummox means to perplex or confuse. Happens to me all the time.

Now, not to hijack this thread or anything, but does anyone have any amusing nicknames for the Pacific spiny lobster found in Baja waters? The best one I can think of is "bugs," which doesn't have the, ah, prurient characteristics of "hummer."

Tomas Tierra - 9-20-2006 at 10:48 AM

this time of year in Ca we call them "summer crab":saint:

DanO - 9-20-2006 at 11:05 AM

I'd rather not see the words "hummer" and "crabs" anywhere near each other.:o

[Edited on 9-20-2006 by DanO]

toneart - 9-20-2006 at 12:50 PM

One of the most distressing things in recent history was that a hummer brought the Clinton Presidency to it's knees, and consequently sank the Democratic Party.:o

Oso - 9-20-2006 at 05:35 PM

Aren't you confusing who was on their knees?

toneart - 9-20-2006 at 09:09 PM

Well....... yes, Oso.
These things are confusing. I was referring to the office, after the fact, I think.:)

FARASHA - 9-21-2006 at 01:47 AM

Amazing - what a comic over a hummer triggers in our brains. And amusing!!
Never expected that! For me it was a simple food and vehicle related curiosity.
Then I learned that there is another meaning beside it - certainly for American's. Bringing in the hoovering, and a parking lot.
Clinton and the Zipper Gate Scandal.
THAT is now bringing up (in my brain) a Havanna Cigar.
And reminds me on the cathouse thread a while ago.
Hoping to get more to hear what people associate with H.

DanO - to what size is the Pacific Spiny Lobster growing??
wan't to compare them to Atlantic and Red Sea species.
And if no one comes up with a Nickname - then lets create one.
I'm calling in for a BRAINSTORMING!!
BTW: Why you look for it? Is it for your Restaurant's Menue?

Sharksbaja - 9-21-2006 at 02:16 AM

No, for idle fun actually! Much cheaper and you don't have to cook em till their red!

I'd call it "BONERSTORMIN"" like in: "he pulled a boner by calling the eel a hummer!"

end of pooooost.......

FARASHA - 9-21-2006 at 04:49 AM

HM -? boner? could one of you guys/gals tell me WHAT is it??
No clue - not in my vocabulary til now. U2U it, if too ..eh .. embarassing!

toneart - 9-21-2006 at 01:09 PM

When Lorena Bobbit took the scissors to her poor (but deserving) husband, he had to get a loaner.
I doubt that, when he got his first look at those snippers, Mr. Boner was even present.

Cypress - 9-21-2006 at 01:39 PM

toneart!:o Makes me hurt just thinking about it!:o:o

How's this? "Rubber lobster: Also called 'Jello-lobster' or 'rags'. These are lobster that have just shed their shells and the new shell has not yet hardened at all. They feel like soft rubber (hence the name) and are quite fragile."

Don't have a restaurant, just a weird sense of humor and a fondness for acquiring useless knowledge (you never know when you might need it -- c-cktail party, the home version of Jeopardy!, etc.)

FARASHA - 9-21-2006 at 11:33 PM

Quote:
Check out www.dictionary.com; it's fairly good on common American slang. You can probably guess from the context which meaning folks are using.

--Larry

Hey Larry
JUST DID LOOK IT UP (- THANKS FOR THE LINK), and beside the obvious meaning in context of the above post, it also defines it as
" an embarassing MISTAKE ":bounce::lol:, yeah sometimes it IS exactly that - - :o:O:o:O
VERRY FUNNY ha a good laugh after all Corky!

DanO - I like the Rubber and Jello - let's see if somebody else comes up with some Nicknames too.
I read the Link you provided earlier, and the quite clear description of their mating ritual was somewhat amazing - very interesting!! And clever on the femal side, but quite risky too.
YEAH - I also have this weirdness of collecting useless information - because you never know when you can either use it ( for cryptic talk) or at least to understand when others use it ( in cryptic talk).
Beside that I love languages and the diversity of meanings of words, and the play with it.
It amazes me again and again - how often I stumble over the very same word with absolute differing meanings. Like now on this thread.
Sounds maybe silly to some - but every language has a SUB-culture within the language, that gives an good insight into the society!!

AND - another association came up - the BOBBIT Case- OUCH, hell that was a story going around the world !!
Can understand HER action VERY well - and somehow admired her that she not only performed the little surgery - also that she threw, what was left, into a cornfield !!

kellychapman - 9-22-2006 at 12:04 AM

I know all about the word "hummer" from 1 of my many husbands....but really makes me mad is all those "Lobster" dinners I should have had instead.....the dirty rat.... and if he was still my husband I would want the one on wheels along with the lobster dinner. It pays to grow older and figure these things out....I am going to email him today and tell him he owes me big time....the vulger american.......Kelly

killing us here.. or our wives will....

Sharksbaja - 9-22-2006 at 12:16 AM

"not only performed the little surgery but..."

"I would want the one on wheels along with the lobster dinner"

good lord woman!!:wow:

cut and paste, cut and paste, oh what fun it is to cut and paste, cut and paste...

They are red cannibals

Sharksbaja - 9-22-2006 at 12:19 AM

While living on Catalina Is. I was constantly amazed by the graduate studies at the science center. One study prompted my daily attention.
Lobsters will, when starving , resort to cannabalism. I found this very painful to watch. I was thrilled when the researcher disclosed his project to me and allowed me to monitor his big fat juicy study specimens while he was away.

Those suckers just disappeared I would tell him.
I would not let them starve to death nor would I let them resort to cannabalism. Against my religion. We never ate so well.

FARASHA - 9-22-2006 at 12:24 AM

Welcome Kelly, at least, another female joining this thread!
Are you a born american?
Seems you had a rather bad association, regarding Hummer.
In your case I would also prefer the wheeldriven version along with some delicious Lobster dinner. Tell HIM after the dinner I've got a headache, and then drive home with MY Hummer.
And leave him alone to please himself.
Don't bother to write him - toooo much of attention.

ANY Nicknames for Lobster, or other names to throw in?
Might be of interest to hear if female language differs from males. ;D Lotte

FARASHA - 9-22-2006 at 12:38 AM

SO - Corky - YOU are telling me you would NOT prefer the wheel one, along with a lobster dinner - ???? NAhhh - Why else did the poor doomed researcher loose all his critters.
Lobster is indeed one of my favorit to have, lunch, dinner whenver.
Hummer - I wish I could afford to buy one ( the wheel version!!!!) some idiots on the street are tempting me to just DRIVE over them with a TANK, as well as some idiots I have met in the past, and cheated/lied/ let me down.:fire::mad:
L:biggrin:

And as long as you behave, your wife won't hurt you, simple, isn't it??:saint::yes:
And if you BEHAVE good enough, you might get even HUMMER for late night dinner. Ask her:lol:

Methinks Hummers suck

Sharksbaja - 9-22-2006 at 12:44 AM

H2-H3 GO Dodge!

I said too much bout' the lowly lobster, er, I mean Hummer, er I mean ....

Look now I'm doin' it, stop! Wait! Not that meaning, we have code words for THAT also.;D;D;D

[Edited on 9-22-2006 by Sharksbaja]

FARASHA - 9-22-2006 at 08:29 AM

ANOTHER association with HUMMER (on wheels) that keeps popping up my head
= CLIVE CUSSLER !!!!!!
Jeeze I love his books!!!:bounce::bounce:

toneart - 9-22-2006 at 10:34 AM

Oh, come on-n-n-n-n! Everybody knows that a hummer is a happy person who puts their lips together and makes music. What ever were you all thinking????:?:

FARASHA - 9-22-2006 at 10:38 AM

hey toneart - welcome to the nutty!!!!:saint:::cool:

kellychapman - 9-22-2006 at 01:28 PM

yes I am a born American....now live permantly in Loreto.....can't say I had a bad association with "hummers" just feel a bit short changed as I would have loved a lobster dinner too.....but now at this age if someone says the word "hummer" I want 4 wheels and a thermador to go with it. So silly when your young and don't know the real meaning........yummmmmmmm.....I love lobster.....and boy can I cook it too!!!! This makes my day.....and makes me laugh myself silly.....:bounce:
Kelly

FARASHA - 9-23-2006 at 01:53 AM

WHICH WAY -you do your Lobster?? never done it, just had it when dinning out.
Oh, yeah I do understand your sentiments about finding out you where short in change. But I guess you gave him a hell of a time too !!??:lol:
I like your attitude!I guess it never gets boring beside you!!

HUMMER

bajaguy - 9-23-2006 at 08:50 AM

May be "the" most descriptive Baja word......

You can ride in one
You can eat one
You can enjoy one
You can give or receive one
and, if the experience is a disaster, you can name it one

:lol::lol::bounce:

FARASHA - 9-23-2006 at 09:14 AM

WELCOME BAJAGUY - you just summarized perfectly what this all is about !!:biggrin:Lots of FUN-one way or other!

kellychapman - 9-23-2006 at 05:16 PM

I learned the secret on a famous cooking show of some sort......first thing you do is parboil the lobster tail (just for a few minues as not to make it tough) then you cut down the middle and fill with some kind of sauce you might like..on the up side.. and BBQ
on the shell side..as you have..cut through the center and put a yummy sauce...garlic & butter...or a spicy sauce of some kind....the flip it over and finish it off on the bbq on the meat side....this does not take along time as the parboiling pretty much cooks it first....then take out of the shell....put the shell on the plate with the whole side up and drape the cooked lobster over it (if you want a fancy look....and drizzle the sauce over the top of the lobster....also nice to have several sauces to dip in if you so desire......yummmmmmmmy.....if you have live lobsters...put into the freezer before you cook them alive......I make up all kinds of sauces to put on them......thank you for your kind comments about me as I am a handful to be around most of the time......in this last issue I happen to be the Kelly that is written about in the Gringo Gazette on the Loreto page....not to be bragging, but a bit more insite to my hyper personality....:bounce:

Maybe this will help:

Old Mother Hubbard
Went to the Cupboard
To get her poor dog a bone
But when she bent over
Old Rover drove her
For he had a bone of his own

Lord, where has this thread taken us?

toneart - 9-23-2006 at 08:29 PM

Oh oh, Oso.....
For your limerick you need a rimshot. (Drummer enters the room).....Ba da boom!

hum a tune....

Sharksbaja - 9-23-2006 at 11:46 PM

There once was a man from ol' Clummer
who worked his whole life as a drummer,
but he really got his kick
by playing his stick...
and not
by being a hummer.

Happy happy Birthday!

From a hill in CenCal over looking the wonderful blue Pacific Ocean,

Dean

FARASHA - 9-24-2006 at 08:30 AM

Lay - IN = UK expression to stay long in bed in the morning on sundays or on a day off.

THANKS DEAN - yeah, I had a great day and hope your B.-day was as good as mine was.
Bright sunshinning day, still warm here, but air getting cooler now. Leafes start slowly to change colors.LOVELY!!!!
BTW - WHICH of the C.C.Novels was it you've been mentioned ??

FARASHA - 9-24-2006 at 08:59 AM

KATE - Thanks - and you're right, my spelling get's sometimes mixed up(as from to lay down, or to lay in or lie in, or is that then a lie?? :?:.
Just tried to respond to another post in Ivrit - and speaking some languages takes it's toll. Sometimes I start to struggle with the spelling of my native language when not focused.
Once I woke after an Surgery, and realized that I spoke english and arabic to the staff - they wondered. And it wasn't after a brainsurgery!!

kellychapman - 9-24-2006 at 09:21 AM

Happy Birthday Farasha.......
I attended a birthday party last nigt for a wonderful woman here in Loreto at Augies.....had a great time and glad to be alive after all the shots of Tequilla that I somehow managed to consume.....danced as of we were 25....and luckily Eric had a hold on my arm to get home safely..... I can't believe we behave like such youngsters....lie in....lay in...or just sleep the day away seems to be a great idea......and can you believe the weather in the morning....god I love it.....makes you feel alive again and not like your going to wither.......live is beautiful....and may you have many happy returns....
Kelly....

FARASHA - 9-24-2006 at 10:20 AM

NOW, Kelly, we are all curious to know - WHAT is this in the GG about you??As we can't read it online, without to pay for it!!
Are you a BAD GAL??:biggrin:That would be NEW's to us !!:bounce::lol:

Till now there are 3 CC Lovers on this Hummer- thread.
I think i read almost all of them!!But can't really say which one I liked most. And speaking of HUMMER on wheels, can't even tell WHEN/WHERE the Hummer was mentioned first time!??
But these books are a Hammer!

Hammer a Hummer?????????

bajaguy - 9-24-2006 at 10:22 AM

Now that could hurt...............

FARASHA - 9-24-2006 at 10:37 AM

YEAH, don't know how it is in US slang, BUT in Austrian slang we refer to something, that is a real big thing, or a big deal -
"a HAMMER".!!

kellychapman - 9-24-2006 at 10:51 AM

oh jeezzzzzzzz.....now I am embarrassed......I will get a copy for you as I cannot believe you do not get copies of the GG in your area, as they seem to be everywhere....I just read the book "how good do you have to be" and I am a good girl.....and a very bad girl too......unpredictable to say the least....just depends....oops not the ones you wear (yet) thank god. Lets just say I was referred to a "pippy longstockings" all grown up......too funny...and as far as the GG charging.to download makes me not like them very much. They give the damn things away by the 100's yet charge to view it online....those bastards....

bajaguy - 9-24-2006 at 10:53 AM

I'm getting the GG North issue on line for free..........

Then maybe a hammer of a hummer could be a good thing

FARASHA - 9-24-2006 at 11:16 AM

YEAH - A HUMMER is a HAMMER, as CC books too!!

I liked the BLUE GOLD ( CoOp with KEMPRECOS), and DRAGON is one of MY FAVORIT beside RAISE THE TITANIC:

As to Al G.,in the CC novrels, I do like his character, BUT he was somewhere described as somehow HAIRY - hm, not my taste I thought.
Don't kinow if i would fall for a Dirk Pitt type. Found out that those guys never stay long enough to be worth more then to dine out with. And tooo many opportunities for them to scrw around. HAD it, thanks, unreliable and narcistic.

bajaguy - 9-24-2006 at 12:31 PM

stick with the "Al" types. They are more steady.........

FARASHA - 9-24-2006 at 12:40 PM

yea, you're right,

kellychapman - 9-25-2006 at 11:10 AM

OOPS.....there I go again not using my head and thinking only of my humore. I certainly did not mean for that to be so harsh or offensive....just a habit of mine really having humor behind it......I will have to watch my words as to some may be offensive to others. I love the GG and they do a very good job of getting their publication out to many of us here is southern Baja....I meant no harm at all......once again I apologize for not being conciderant.....

FARASHA - 9-25-2006 at 11:15 AM

NEVERMIND MY DEAR - you are not alone with this tiny flaw.AND onthe other hand - you are for sure not hiding anything. I prefere it that way.Better then the other way around. That could be easily boring then :saint:

FARASHA - 9-25-2006 at 10:00 PM

WAT A HAMMER !!HARDLY TO RECOGNISE WHAT THIS WAS BEFORE:!JEEZ - :O

Would that be

bajaguy - 9-26-2006 at 07:15 AM

a hummer of a hammered Hummer???

FARASHA - 9-26-2006 at 07:29 AM

DEFINATELY; BY THE LOOK OF IT!!! POOR DARLING, suffered a heavy blow. A shame!

kellychapman - 9-26-2006 at 08:20 AM

thank god it was a hummer from the looks of that picture the driver may have had a chance of survival.....:( if it was in Baja hopefully they had an airlift insurance of some sort....lol....can't help myself when it comes to MASA.....or any rescue of somekind is all I care about.
Kelly

Cypress - 9-26-2006 at 09:01 AM

That's one ragged-out Hummer! Bet the insurance agent cried.

FARASHA - 9-26-2006 at 09:05 AM

Kate Bush? Had a hummer song??:?:Must have missed that one!
Just looked up the HUMMER website,(www.hummer.com) OMG, started drooling, I WANT to Have ONE!!!!!:bounce:
The website is great, I liked especially the TV spots - The SUBMARINE would be my choice.

FARASHA - 9-26-2006 at 09:42 AM

OH YEAH - LIONHEART was one of my favorit - Hammer Horror still doesn't ring a bell. Will have to hear the Album again.
BTW - right now we are equal with our NOMAD scores!!

Oso - 9-26-2006 at 05:43 PM

FARASHA - 9-27-2006 at 02:29 AM

THEN ARNIE SHOULD SWITCH TO A BURRO !!!!
WOULD SUIT HIS ROOTS BACK HOME.
He never really gave a tinylittleratsa** way back about anything, election time????

FARASHA - 9-27-2006 at 09:21 AM

On the other hand the poor Burro will probably suffer from an Backache then.Better Arnie switches to a pair of Hikingboots.:biggrin:
