Quickest Route San Felipe to Yuma

Fatboy - 9-17-2006 at 08:38 PM

While down on our upcoming trip I am going to need to 'run' in to Yuma to do some business. It looks like I should head up to Calexico from San Felipe, take 98 east to 8 and 8 eastward into Yuma.

Is there a better way? And any idea on how long it will take?

Thanks

Well, I live in San Luis, AZ, so that's a consideration. But I usually cut east on Mex 4 through Luis B.Gonzalez and up Mex 40 to SLRC. There are lots of alternatives through the ag valley and sometimes the crossing is quicker at Algodones. But not always.

Yes, BC 4 to Algodones!

A lot of times we go from San Felipe to Yuma via Mexico Hwy 5 to Hwy 4 to Hwy 3 to Hwy 2 to Algodones. I will try and post a picture. It is not freeway but a nice trip.

Sounds/looks a lot shorter/quicker. Is it well marked? In other words do I have be really watching for unsigned turnoffs and such?

Thanks

I am not sure how to answer that, I made it the first time and there were signs then. Now I drive with the GPS and don't look for signs anymore. Worse case is you miss highway 3 (off of highway 4) and that would only put you on the road to San Luis. A little longer but not that bad. Good luck.

is correct. 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 and cross @ Algodones. This route is shorter than 5 to 98 to 8 but takes 30 - 60 minutes longer. If you have the time, I recommend the former route. It will take you through many small agricultural poblados that are untouched by tourists.

K, I leave Tommorrow night or early thursday morning and now I am hearing that the 5-98-8 is actually quicker time wise and time is the most important on this trip.

Does everyone agree that 5 to 98 to 8 is quicker?

Go one route one way, then the other on the return... then report back to us!

Just make sure you are not on the 8 heading into Yuma as the sun is rising, unless you have some welding goggles......Man that sun is BLINDING.

Taco, you got that right. Every damn time I have to daytrip to Phoenix for a meeting, I find myself going east on 8 at sunrise and west at sunset, dark glasses, visor at max angle, humped over and squinting. Hate it

Fatboy, there is one tricky spot on the southbound leg. Getting onto the 5 from the 4, DO NOT attempt a (logical) left turn. There is a small concrete divider that will give quite a bump and if a cop is hiding nearby... You have to make a right and go north toward Mexicali about 50 yds., then left and around a small loop to head south to SF.

Trivial sidenote: I can't remember exactly which, but on one of the roads between the Mexicali airport and Mex 2, there is a taco stand/restaurant with an intriguing name: " 'Taca Bron"
